‘Next-generation’ wireless offloading to solve the challenge of mobile
data explosion
Teleste’s patent-pending wireless offload solution introduces superior error
tolerance and high capacity offloading of Full HD video over wireless networks
TURKU, FINLAND – 12 March 2015 – Teleste, an international technology group specialised in broadband
video and data communication systems and services, says the challenge for growing capacity needs in onboard video surveillance solutions can be solved by increasing error tolerance and improving the efficiency of
wireless offload procedures. The company has brought to market a wireless offload solution that enables considerably higher data transmission throughput at higher error rates compared to basic industry solutions.
“Demand for higher resolution video in on-board video surveillance solutions is growing strongly and the development is likely to continue in future. However, utilizing video formats like HD and Full HD has considerably
increased capacity needs for both transmission and storing the recorded video content. Together with the
growing needs to ensure public safety, this has resulted in an explosion of mobile data”, said Johan Slotte,
Deputy CEO and Head of Video Networks for Teleste. “At Teleste, we aim to take challenges, and offer our
customers a solution that helps them offload video recordings in their wireless networks efficiently and reliably,
allowing seamless data transmission in demanding on-board environments.”
Mobile data explosion challenges on-board video surveillance systems
Today, video surveillance systems have become more and more widely used for public security on mass
transit vehicles on railways, metros and buses. With even more than ten cameras per vehicle, and thousands
of vehicles pulling into depots, the number of cameras in a typical on-board system goes very high, and so
does the amount of video recordings that need to be transmitted from on-board to ground systems. At the
same time, more and more storage space is required for the recorded audio-visual information due to the increasing use of high resolution formats such as HD and Full HD as the default camera resolution.
The challenge for transportation operators is how to ensure sufficient network transmission capacity for offloading the video recordings within the short time that the vehicles stay at the stops. For vehicles constantly
on the move, establishing a connection through cable networks at each stop is too time-consuming and laborious. On the other hand, the problem for wireless networks is low error tolerance: in a basic industry solution,
the wireless offload throughput capacity tends to fall quickly when the packet error rate starts to rise, which
makes it difficult to achieve the sufficient transmission capacity.
‘Next-generation’ solution for wireless offloading of full HD video
Teleste has studied the problem of wireless offload transmission, and has come up with a patent-pending solution that ensures the fast and reliable transmission of recorded content even with higher packet error rates.
In a typical, industrial wireless solution, the throughput capacity quickly drops from 180-270 mbps to almost
zero when the packet error rate approaches 25%. In Teleste’s solution, the throughput capacity is still close to
160-240 mbps with an error rate of 25%.
Compared to typical industrial solutions, Teleste’s ‘next-generation’ wireless offloading enebles fast and reliable transmission of even Full HD video recordings, allowing transportation operators to benefit from increased
accuracy and relevance of the audio-visual content. The solution also provides different options for transmitting the recorded content: whether in 3G, 4G or wi-fi network, the offload can be performed either at once at
once or over the course of several partial offload procedures, thus making it possible to improve the operational efficiency of the on-board surveillance system.
