John Robert Skeldon “For God so loved the world…” (John 3:16). This most famous of biblical texts lies at the heart of the gospel passage for this 4th Sunday of Lent, which the tradition of the Church calls Laetare Sunday, the Latin imperative for Be happy! It is sort of a midpoint in the season of Lent, this season of repentance and metanoia. We have every reason to be happy, as the great feast of Easter and the victory of Christ’s resurrection draws ever closer once again. The greatest reason we have, as human beings, for being happy is that God indeed does love the world: God who is “rich in mercy” as the second reading from the letter to the Ephesians says; God who “had compassion on his people and his dwelling place” as the first reading from the second book of Chronicles relates. Human beings—all of us—do not have to weep any longer, hanging up our harps on the trees of a foreign land (see the responsorial psalm: Psalm 137). We can be happy, because “God gave his only begotten Son so that whoever puts his faith in him might not perish, but rather might have eternal life.” God does not want us to perish; he wants us to truly be alive…to live eternally. So what are we waiting for?, as Pope Francis asks. Be happy then! Reflexión Magnánima de Padre John Robert Skeldon "Porque tanto amó Dios al mundo..." (Juan 3:16). Fr. Jim Pemberton Continue to pray for Fr. Jim as he recovers from his fall.
