Our branch has been busy and I hope you have all enjoyed the programs. On page one of this Newsletter there is information about the next branch event, the March salad lunch. A reminder: The Book Author Luncheon with Mary Alice Monroe will take place on February 21st at Bent Pine Golf Club. There is still time to get a ticket and support the IRSC scholarship fundraiser; the registration form is on page 5. A few words on the January events: The Regional Branch meeting on January 10th was an enjoyable luncheon. I hope you all saw the wonderful press coverage both in 32963 and Vero News. All of our neighboring branches were represented – Melbourne, Stuart, Port St. Lucie and St. Lucie County. We shared information about our branches with a focus on fundraising to support our mission causes. The Co-President of AAUW Florida, Susan Berlin, gave us an update on some the activities at State. A big thank you to all our members who helped make it a success. I want to especially thank Linda Barker who reached out to our fellow branches and conducted the business meeting; Becki Manning who publicized the event, Sandra Lackas and Cindy Beres who handled ticketing; Pat Blossom and Sylvia LaRocca for securing the venue and arranging for the Stein Mart fashion show; all our member models and Sandra Lackas who clearly has a seconding calling as a delightful master of ceremonies. The play fundraiser “Tea for Three” was a huge success. Kudos to Linda Barker! She assumed the enormous task of making it happen from inviting Elaine Bromka, booking the Emerson Center, securing sponsorship, working on staging with Carole Strauss, assisting Becki Manning with publicity, and writing the playbill – let’s just say she produced the play! She made us all proud and enhanced the reputation AAUW in Vero Beach. Thank you also to Emerson Center for helping us accomplish our goal. My best to you all, Linda Directory Additions: A big welcome to our new members! As India starts to prosper, the residents of Annawadi are electric with hope. With intelligence, humor, and deep insight into what connects people to one another in an era of tumultuous change, Behind the Beautiful Forevers, based on years of uncompromising reporting, carries the reader headlong into one of the twenty-first century’s hidden worlds—and into the hearts of families impossible to forget. “Reported like Watergate, written like Great Expectations, and handily the best international nonfiction in years.”—New York “Inspiring, and irresistible . . . Boo’s extraordinary achievement is twofold. She shows us how people in the most desperate circumstances can find the resilience to hang on to their humanity. Just as important, she makes us care.”—People Winner of the National Book Award | The PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award | The Los Angeles Times Book Prize | the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award | The New York Public Library’s Helen Bernstein Book Award The reviewer, Dr. Jonna Mackin, teaches American literature, identity studies and expository writing at Dartmouth College. Jonna received her BA at Coe College, her MA at the University of Pennsylvania and her PhD at Rutgers University. Her thesis, called Subject to laughter: Comedy and ethnicity in contemporary American fiction is based on the premise that comedy arises out of social tensions and that comic pleasure has the power to influence the politics of racial and ethnic collectives. 3 ACTIVITIES AND INTEREST GROUPS New Members interested in joining ?
