On graduating, she worked for BBC Radio Four’s Drama Department, reading and assessing new scripts and also researching Radio Four Documentaries. After further journalism and corporate work, Rebecca studied for her Licentiate Teacher’s Diploma at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. She has been teaching Speech and Drama privately and in schools for over 15 years; she was Head of the drama department at a preparatory school for over ten years. Rebecca now runs a thriving Speech and Drama practice from her home in Bristol, teaching both children and adults. Additionally a voice and presentation skills coach in the region, Rebecca teaches in private and state schools, colleges and businesses. Rebecca has been actively involved in theatre in the South West and is an Adjudicator for the Rose Bowl. Rebecca loves teaching Speech and Drama, giving students the opportunity to grow in confidence and expertise in their vocal skills. A festival experience provides a supportive environment for the children to develop these skills further. CAROLINE DIFFLEY Born in the Brighouse and Rastrick area of Yorkshire, Caroline Diffley attended Badminton School, Bristol, after which she went on to study the piano at the Royal College of Music in London. While at the College she gained diplomas in both piano teaching and piano performing; her teachers were Lamar Crowson, David Parkhouse and Malcolm Binns. She also spent a term at the Academia Chigiana in Siena, working with both Guido Agosti and the pianist Arturo Michelangeli. During a teaching career spanning four decades, she has taught in Kent (at the Kent Music School) in Oxford (at the Dragon School) and widely in the South West. She taught piano at Wells Cathedral School, working with both specialist and main-school students and at Dartington College of Arts for twelve years. She now runs a private teaching practice in Exeter, as well as working for the South West Music School both as a tutor and as a mentor. Caroline is an extremely experienced Associated Board examiner and has examined all over the UK and the Far East, as well as in the USA, Australia and New Zealand. She is also on the Diploma examining panel, the Presenter panel and is a Music Medals moderator. She has been a mentor on the CT ABRSM course and is currently a busy adjudicator for the British and International Federation of Festivals. She has also published articles on various aspects of piano teaching and learning. She has two grown-up children and lives in Exeter with her husband, who is a Professor of Italian. 3 DAVID BRUCE-PAYNE, B.MUS, FRCO (CHM), ARCM Formerly a chorister at King’s College, Cambridge, England, David later studied at the Royal College of Music, London, with Herbert Howells and Douglas Guest. Whilst there, he was awarded the W.T. Best Memorial Scholarship given by the Worshipful Company of Musicians, enabling further organ study in Germany. Appointments held include Second Assistant Organist at Westminster Abbey and Music Master at the Choir School, Organist and Master of the Choristers at Birmingham Cathedral and Director of Music at King Edward’s School. He was formerly Senior Lecturer at Birmingham Conservatoire and Director of Music at St. George’s Church, Edgbaston. Organ recital and Choral conducting tours have been undertaken in the United States, Canada, Germany and West Indies. He has also performed as soloist with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Improvisation is one of his particular interests. He is a retired examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. He is also an adjudicator member of the British Federation of Music Festivals and works extensively throughout the United Kingdom and abroad. Many compositions of Church music by him have been published with several performances on BBC Radio. He recently returned to adjudicate at the Hong Kong Festival. He is now living in Dorset where he is continuing to freelance as a performer and adjudicator. He is President of Weymouth Choral Society and is director of the Harmonia Singers who perform in southern cathedrals and churches. He is joint conductor of the Occasional Singers based in Dorchester and is now involved as a Trustee of The Lyme Regis Organ School. 4 Thornbury Arts Festival Eisteddfod. Policy to protect children and vulnerable adults. Introduction; The purpose of the Eisteddfod is to provide opportunities for children and young people to perform music, speech and drama in a friendly, safe environment, where professional adjudicators will offer feed back to promote the artistic development and education of those taking part. It is essential that all participants are protected, as far as possible, from the possibility of abuse during the Eisteddfod – hence this policy. Who are the subjects of this policy? The intention is to provide a safe environment for all children under 18 who take part or are in the audience. This of course means children of any ethnic group or with any disability. Parents/teachers are asked to inform the organisers of any provision that should be made for those with special needs, in advance of the events. The policy also covers any vulnerable adults who attend the Eisteddfod and whose needs for protection have been notified to the organisers before the events. The organisers cannot take responsibility for any special needs of which they have not had prior notice. Where are the Eisteddfod events held? This programme indicates that the classes will be held either in a private hall or in Thornbury Parish church. A risk assessment is conducted of premises used by the Eisteddfod. The People who act as Stewards at the Eisteddfod. All are volunteers and are local people. Each will wear a badge to identify themselves. The organisers have contact details for them all. At every Eisteddfod event there will be at least one volunteer organiser whose details have been checked and cleared by the Criminal Records Bureau (a CRB check). It is the responsibility of this person to ensure that the entrance doors and toilet areas are constantly watched and any irregular presence is challenged. All stewards will refer any complaint by or about a child’s or vulnerable adult’s safety to the steward who has been CRB checked.. Such complaints will all be treated seriously, documented and dated. Any allegations of abuse will be reported to the appropriate officer of the South Gloucestershire Council. Thereafter, the Eisteddfod organisers will follow the procedures required by the local authority, which may include contact with the police. Responsibilities of Parents and Guardians. All parents and guardians must ensure that their child (if aged under 18 years) is accompanied and adequately supervised by themselves, a teacher or some other adult who stays in the building until the child leaves. This is an absolute requirement of the organisers. By allowing a child to take part in any of the Eisteddfod classes the parent or guardian is assumed to have accepted this responsibility and taken steps to put it into effect. The organisers will assume that, by sending this programme to each family whose child/children have sent in entry forms, their parents are accepting responsibility, if their child/children perform at the Eisteddfod. For those to whom the programme is sent via teachers, the organisers will require the teacher to confirm that this responsibility has been made known to the parents involved. Dressing and Changing rooms and toilets. The entrance to these facilities will be supervised by Eisteddfod stewards. The parent/teacher/responsible adult looking after each child will have to supervise their child once inside these facilities. This means that this supervisor must be of the same sex as the child. The Eisteddfod stewards will not be responsible for supervision inside these areas, although they will check the entrances to them. 5 Audio and Video recordings. Sadly we cannot allow any audio or visual recordings to be made by parents, friends or teachers during the Eisteddfod. We may have a Festival or press photographer present and he/she will only take pictures/ make recordings where the parents of the child concerned have signed a form to say they have no objections. Legislation and Guidance which underpins this policy; The Children Acts 1989 and 2004; the Police Act 1997; the Data Protection Act 1998; the Human Rights Act 1998; the Protection of Children Act 1999; The Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000; the vulnerable Groups Act 2006. The names of the organisers and the venues for the Eisteddfod can be found at the front of this programme. 6 SUNDAY 8 MARCH 2015 Adjudicator: Caroline Diffley Piano, Original Composition, Brass, Woodwind, Guitar, Strings, Mixed Instrumentals & Family Groups Venue: Whitsun Hall 9.00am P1 PIANO (Classical) 8 years and under Lizzie Barnes Arthur Mason Hannah May Yu-Heng Chu Harriet Hodges Mark Velichko Eva Carter Alice Atkinson Maya Sapkota 9.40am P2 PIANO (Classical) 11 years and under Richard Usherwood Yu-Xuan Chu Constance Talbot Elspeth Ashton Rebecca Pughe Polly Davies Peter Banks COFFEE 10.35am P3 PIANO (Classical) 14 years and under Olivia Campbell Aditi Mehendale Jemima Barnes Daisy Davies Josh Ocone Imogen Godfrey Sophie Whitfield Rebecca Taylor P4 PIANO (Classical) 17 years and under Ellen O'Brien 11.35am P6 PIANO (Contemporary) 8 years and under Joshua Davis Lizzie Barnes Isabella Talbot 7 11.55am P7 PIANO (Contemporary to include jazz & popular music) 11 years and under Isabel Browning Poppy Carter Carmen Rey-Jones 12.15pm P8 PIANO (Contemporary) 14 years and under Eleanor Russell Aditi Mehendale Jemima Barnes P9 PIANO (Contemporary) 17 years and under Ellen O'Brien LUNCH 1.30pm P11 PIANO DUET/TRIO 11 years and under Hannah May & Mark Velichko Polly Davies & Peter Banks Alice Atkinson & Maya Sapkota 1.50pm P12 PIANO DUET/TRIO 14 years and under Daisy Davies & Elspeth Ashton P13 PIANO DUET/TRIO 17 years and under Jemima Barnes & Ellen O'Brien Lucy Franklin, Sophie Whitfield & Ellen O'Brien 2.10pm OC2 ORIGINAL COMPOSITION 17 years and under Rebecca Taylor Roshan Patel Sam & Jake Newman Turner Ellen O'Brien, Lizzie O'Brien, Beth Wong, Lucy Franklin & Sophie Whitfield Beth Pritchard 2.45pm B1 BRASS (Trumpet/Cornet/Tuba/Trombone/Euphonium/Horns/F&E/Baritone) 11 years and under Richard Usherwood Tom O'Brien Archie Carter Laura Price 3.10pm B2 BRASS 14 years and under Ben White-Horne Alistair White-Horne 8 B3 BRASS 17 years and under Ellen O'Brien 3.30pm B6 BRASS ENSEMBLE 14 years and under Laura Price & Nathan Price B7 BRASS ENSEMBLE 17 years and under Betar Brass COFFEE 4.00pm W1 WOODWIND (Recorder/Flute/Clarinet/Saxophone/Oboe/Bassoon) 11 years and under Isabelle Preston Timothy Mitchell Karina Needham 4.10pm W2 WOODWIND 14 years and under Rebecca Taylor Olivia Campbell Timothy Mitchell Loveday Kossman W3 WOODWIND 17 years and under Sophie Peathey Johns 4.50pm G1 GUITAR (excluding electric guitar) 11 years and under Angus Duncan G2 GUITAR 14 years and under Jemima Barnes 5.05pm S1 STRINGS (Violin/Viola/Cello/DoubleBass) 11 years and under Madara Plusa Mathis Bellino Aggie Barnes Lizzie Barnes Hannah May Rupert Clapham Flora Clapham 5.45pm S2 STRINGS 14 years and under Jemima Barnes Lizzie O'Brien 9 6.00pm S5 STRINGS ENSEMBLE 11 years and under Lizzie Barnes & Sunny MacDonald S6 STRINGS ENSEMBLE 14 years and under Aggie Barnes & Lizzie O’Brien 6.25pmpm M2 MIXED INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE 14 years and under Ben White-Horne, Alistair White-Horne & Jemima Barnes Katie Usherwood & Lizzie O’Brien M3 MIXED INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE 17 years and under Lucy Franklin, Sophie Whitfield & Ellen O'Brien M4 MIXED INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE 18-21 years Georgina Barr & Alice Holmes 6.45pm FG1 FAMILY GROUP Any age Family Barnes The O'Brien-Lunts Family B & C Family Sapkota Family 10 TUESDAY 10 MARCH 2015 CHOIRS & ORCHESTRAS Venue: St Mary’s Church Adjudicator: David Bruce-Payne 9.45am V19 CHOIRS 7 years and under Manorbrook Primary School Crossways Infant School Tockington Manor Lower School Oldbury-on -Severn School Frampton Sunbeams Choir Broadway Infants School 10.50am W5 WOODWIND ENSEMBLE (Any combination of Woodwind Instruments) 11 years and under St Mary’s Primary Recorder Group 11.05am V20 CHOIRS 11years and under St Mary's Primary School, Thornbury Manorbrook Primary School Crossways Junior School The Singing Saints Badminton Junior School Frampton Starlight Choir Tockington Manor Junior School LUNCH 1.20pm O2 ORCHESTRA 11 years and under Badminton Junior School V21 CHOIRS 14 years and under Junior FR Tockington Manor School 2.10pm WM1 WORLD MUSIC (Any combination of singing and musical instruments; this class may include movement and appropriate dress) 11 years and under Oldbury-on-Severn School Pandemonium 2.30pm WM2 WORLD MUSIC 17 years and under Wriggle Jigglers Steel Pancakes Panache 11 SATURDAY 14 MARCH 2015 SPEECH AND DRAMA Venue: Whitsun Hall Adjudicator: Rebecca Thompson VERSE SPEAKING All verse speaking from “Read Me 10th Anniversary Edition: A poem for every day of the year” by Gaby Morgan.
