The Y is a powerful association
of men, women and children joined
together by a shared commitment
to nurture the potential of kids,
promote healthy living and foster
a sense of social responsibility. I
believe that lasting personal and
social change can only come about
when communities work together
to invest in our kids, our health
and our neighbors. That’s why, at the Y, strengthening
community is our cause.
Our staff at the Y live our cause when they think, act
and communicate in ways that strengthen community,
nurture the potential of children and teens, improve
the community’s health and well-being, and give back
and support neighbors.
To impact our cause, “Strengthening the Foundations
of Community”, the Y specifically creates resources to
align our people, programs, processes and culture with
our cause, while ensuring integration with our mission.
Join us and our numerous resources in Youth
Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.

The Maui Family YMCA is governed by a voluntary
Board of Directors that oversees the plans and priorities. The Y nominates Board members and officers,
who have frequently served as volunteers or have
a passion to serve others in our community. This
ensures our Board members are well versed in local
issues, challenges and opportunities facing Maui’s Y.
Directors serve for a three-year term that is renewed
once. The President and Chief Executive Officer of the
Y reports operations to the Maui Family YMCA Board.

CAMP
Whether it’s through singing or acting out skits, playing soccer or swimming;
counselors at the Maui Family YMCA day camp programs have led kids in
developing good values and having fun for more than 45 years. Wherever
the location, the programs have the same outcome: kids have fun while they
learn how to make new friends, build new skills, and grow self-confidence. For
kids, the Maui Family Y camp programs are a fun way to enjoy the summer.
For moms and dads, it’s a way to give their children a positive developmental
experience.
All camp programs provide basic skill knowledge in several different sports

For Youth development
Nurturing the potential of every child & teen
The YMCA was home to the world’s first group swimming lesson in 1907. The YMCA has a long history and an
excellent reputation for teaching people how to swim. The Maui Family YMCA is no different. With lap swimming, open
and family times, water exercise classes, swimming lessons (group or private) the Maui Family YMCA has everyone’s
needs covered. Our YMCA instructors are certified to help any level of swimmer.
If you are looking to learn a new stroke or just brush up on the ones you already know, our instructors can help.
Parent-Child Lessons
6 mos-2 years
Parent-Child classes provide
experiences and activities for
parents and infants to feel more
comfortable in the water. The child
will become aware of the differences
between moving through water and
on dry land, while the parent will
become aware of how to teach his/
her child to be safe in and around
the water. Participants will learn
how to safely enter and exit the
water, as well as how to submerge
their faces and explore buoyancy in
a front and back position.
Parent-child swim lessons require
one parent to accompany the child
in the water.
Youth Swim Lessons
Students in Pike/Eel are oriented to the aquatics
environment and progressively gain skills as they
move through the YMCA swim program. At later
levels, students build on their basic skills to learn
propulsive movements on both the front and back.
Personal safety and rescue skills are included to
help students meet safety goals. By the end of the
fish level, students will have obtained the skills and
fitness level necessary for entrance into advanced
courses such as swim club or other aquatic activities.
GUPPY
PIKE/EEL
Level 1 • 3-5 years
Beginners could have a fear of being
unfamiliar with how to swim. Their
movements will be rudimentary. To
progress to the next level they will
paddle a length of the pool.
RAY/STARFISH
Level 2 • 5-8 years
Students can already paddle on
their front, back, and side. They will
be able to paddle across the pool
without support and a couple of
lengths of the pool with support.
POLLIWOG
Level 4 • 8-10 years
Crawl stroke, backstroke, and
elementary back stroke will be
in good form. The rest of the
strokes will improve and show all
basic elements. Endurance will be
improved and students will also be
able to swim two lengths of the pool
without support.
MINNOW
Level 5 • 8-11 years
All traditional strokes have all basic
elements. Refinements are becoming
mastered. Good endurance will allow
swimming 300 continuous yards.
FISH
Level 6 • 8-13 years
All traditional strokes are mastered.
Students work on improving
efficiency, endurance, and
adaptability to unique situations.
They work on creative movements in
the water.
Level 3 • 7-9 years
Students will be able to perform
rudimentary crawl, back, fly, breast,
elementary back, and sidestroke.
Refinement levels of swimmers begin to
look more like our traditional strokes.
They are able to swim a couple lengths
of the pool without support.

Annual Support Campaign
At the Maui Family YMCA, one of our most
important goals has always been to enrich the
lives of children in our community. By introducing
children to experiences that will help them grow
into responsible, successful adults, we make the
community we love a better place to live. One child
at a time. One family at a time.
Membership and program fees only support a portion
of the Maui Family YMCA’s needs. We need your help
to ensure that no one is denied the YMCA experience
based on the inability to pay. Through the Annual
Support Campaign, your contribution helps us provide
program and financial assistance to families and
individuals in need. By working together we give our
community the opportunity to grow strong in spirit,
mind and body.
