MARCH 22, 2015
From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
Whole Community Catechesis
Question of the Week
Jn 12:20-33
Theme:
New life in Christ Jesus
Question for Adults:
The death from which we are called is healing from
those things which bind us and hold us back: memories, fears,
rejections, or other such things. What binds you? What keeps
you from fully being your own most true self in Christ?
Question for Adolescents:
Lazarus received a second chance at life through
Jesus. How have you experienced second chances in your own
life?
Question for Children:
How do your actions show that you put your faith and
trust in Jesus?

Parish Penance Service
Monday, March 23rd—6:00 p.m.
Additional Times for Confession During Lent:
Saturday, March 28th—9:00 a.m.—10:00 a.m.
Monday, March 30th—after 7:30 a.m. Mass
Wednesday, April 1st—after 7:30 a.m. Mass
Periodically I have been presenting summaries of each
of Father Ron Rolheiser’s “ten commandments” for better living
from his recent book, Sacred Fire: A Vision for a Deeper
Human and Christian Maturity. His first and foundational
commandment is: “Live in gratitude and thank your Creator by
enjoying your life.” The second commandment is: “Be willing to
carry more and more of life’s complexities with empathy.” The
third is: “Transform jealousy, anger, bitterness, and hatred
rather than give them back in kind.” The fourth is: “Let suffering
soften your heart rather than harden your soul.” The fifth:
“Forgive – those who hurt you, your own sins, the unfairness of
your life, and God for not rescuing you.”
The sixth is: “Bless more and curse less!” We can
measure our maturity by our capacity to bless rather than to
criticize. Blessing is not reserved to priests and deacons.
Anyone in a position of authority or in a teaching or coaching or
mentoring role is called to praise and bless and affirm the young
who are entrusted to their care. By contrast, someone who
curses or criticizes is immature and threatened by the goodness
and giftedness of another.
Joy is to be found in blessing others. In the words of
Father Rolheiser: “When we act petty, we get to feel petty.
When we act like God, we get to feel like God.”
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Steve Callahan

A Stewardship Moment
The climactic event of Jesus’ passion and death is
drawing closer; a time when the great confrontation between
Jesus and the powers of darkness take place. Jesus invites his
disciples into a great mystery with curious pronouncements:
Those who love their lives just as they are will lose them. If a
grain of wheat dies, it will bear much fruit. When Jesus is lifted
up, he will draw all to himself. The Christian steward knows life
can’t be lived in complacency. We are called to die to self, bear
more fruit, be raised up with Jesus. In today’s Gospel reading
Jesus brings discomfort to those who are comfortable. Jesus
urges us to step out of our “comfort zone.” How will we respond
to Jesus?

Thank You
Dear Members of Saint Brigid Parish.
On behalf of Kairos San Diego, we would like to
express our heartfelt thanks for your overwhelmingly generous
and loving support for our March 2015 weekend retreat that is in
progress as you read this. It began on Thursday, (3/19) and will
end Sunday evening at about the same time your 5:30 p.m.
Mass ends. Your many dozens of cookies, notes and letters,
colored placemats, and posters are appreciated by the inmate
candidates far beyond our ability to express on paper. Because
of your exceptional and broadbased support and prayers, 72
prisoners at the R. J. Donovan Correction Facility in Otay Mesa
will have met and embraced Jesus Christ for the first time in
their lives. Because of you, Kairos San Diego was able to visit
and pray with “our brothers” in prison. Many thanks and may
God bless all of you.

Treasures from our Tradition
As we approach Holy Week, the creative juices of the
ancient church of Jerusalem begin to shape our journey. In old
Jerusalem at this season of the year, the attempt was made to
recall the events leading up to Christ’s passion. Those attempts
were based not only on time, with celebrations of events as
close to the day and hour as possible, but also on people’s best
guesses as to the actual place of these events. Vast numbers of
pilgrims flooded the city during the forty days of Lent, many of
them catechumens in their last stages of preparation for
initiation. The fourth-century Spanish nun Egeria wrote a
delightfully detailed diary of her experience of this lively and
aerobic liturgy, which involved hearty singing, strong preaching,
and nimble processions across vast and arduous terrain.
Much of this energy was lost over the centuries, with the
procession of palms a noteworthy exception. Northern climates
had to reinterpret this Jerusalem liturgy, using forsythia, willow,
or olive branches, but to this day the entry into Holy Week by a
community on the move accompanied by joyful song hearkens
back to a venerable tradition. Egeria’s letters were rediscovered
a little more than a hundred years ago, but they reveal a pattern
of prayer: full, conscious, active participation, to which we have
a right and a duty.

The New Covenant
When the prophet Jeremiah coined the term “new
covenant” he was actually doing something quite radical. For the
Jewish people, there was only one covenant, the one made
between the Lord God and Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai.
For Jeremiah to suggest that God would somehow supersede
the covenant with a new one would have sounded audacious to
Jewish ears. But in this way he is a predecessor of Jesus who,
in the Gospel of John, is continually portrayed as superseding
the past, establishing the reign of God in a new way. And in
today’s Gospel passage, Jesus the “new covenant” speaks the
language of his “new commandment” of love when he tells of
the dying grain of wheat, and of our own need to die to self in
order to be raised with Christ. As Lent ends and we prepare to
enter into Holy Week, the dying grain of wheat serves as an
excellent symbol of the kind of dying and self‑sacrifice to which
disciples are called, a symbol of that new covenant written deep
within our hearts.
