Prayer and Sunday Worship
“All things are of your making. All times and seasons obey your laws.”
Does a Catholic have six
days of the week for their own
interests and that of their
family, and one hour a week
on Sunday devoted to God?
Or does every moment of every day belong to the
Lord? Is not all of life a liturgy?
In fact, there ought to be no separation between
the practical activities and decisions of daily life, and
our relationship with God and the spiritual life.
Prayer is not a small compartment of our life. Prayer,
our openness of heart and mind to God, is meant to
pervade every moment of every day. Our lives are
worship of God or liturgy.
Both the Bible and tradition of Christianity give
us an understanding of reality that encounters the
living God everywhere. That spiritual encounter leads
us to praise and thanksgiving and adoration. When
Moses encounters God on the top of Mount Sinai in
Exodus 3, he is told to take off his shoes because the
ground on which he stands is holy. But as the
narrative unfolds, it becomes clear that God cannot
be tied to any one place, neither a mountaintop nor
the Temple in Jerusalem. The entire world, the ground
on which we stand is holy, because God is everywhere
and not only in places designated for worship.
We gather each Sunday in a Holy Place, a
building that is dedicated exclusively to worship and
praise of God. We do this as a community of believers
because God desires us to express our love in
response to His; and because we need to tell the Lord
how much we love Him. “Remember the Sabbath day,
and keep it holy.” (Exodus 20. 8)
We have difficulty in recognizing the presence of
God and the holiness of people, places and events. We
have to make a special effort like Moses on the
mountaintop, to take off our shoes and be open to
the experience of holiness. Sunday, the resurrection
day, is a time dedicated to the Lord. “Those who eat
my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I
will raise them up on the last day….” (John 6.56)

As people of faith we know that everything we
have and all that we are is a pure gift from God.
We cannot deserve it, and we can never judge
others; but only try to share our good fortune
with those who may have less than we are blessed
with. Like Jesus, we are fully engaged in the
effort to redeem the world from sin and
deprivation. War and poverty and all that
dehumanize people are our enemy. We are filled
with hope because God has assured us of victory
ultimately; a victory revealed in the resurrection
of Christ from the dead and his promise that we
shall all live forever. In the meantime, we have a
task to accomplish, and that is to cooperate with
the Holy Spirit in furthering the kingdom of God
until the Lord returns.

Jesus would not take up the sword or permit
his followers to do so. He revealed a God of
infinite forgiveness and mercy, a God of
compassionate solidarity with the broken people
of the world; with a special love for the wounded
and the marginal. Pope Francis is putting heavy
stress on this key theme.

We set aside Sunday as the opportunity for us
to focus attentively on God and get out of the
everyday routine and drudgery. Without this
framing of our lives at Mass, we cannot be
conscious of who we are and become drawn into
the mystery of God’s love. By sharing the body
and blood of the Lord, we become more than
ever the body and blood of the Lord. When we
worship together we support and sustain one
another in the work of love that Christ has
commissioned us to carry on until his return.

is currently the Principal of Xaverian High School in Brooklyn and an
adjunct instructor of Theology at Molloy College. He is also the cohost of WABC 770’s Religion on the Line with Rabbi Joseph Potasnik,
on Sunday Mornings 7:30 - 10:00 am. Deacon Kevin was ordained in
2002 for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, assigned to Our Lady of
Peace parish in Lynbrook.

present a Choral Meditation on the
Passion of Christ.
The service will include readings from the Gospel
narratives of the Passion by John, Mark and
Matthew, the Litany of the Passion, Hymns for
the congregation and choir anthems.

Farmingdale community for this service that will
lead to a more meaningful, richer participation in
Holy Week.

Sunday Night Adoration
Every Sunday during Lent
there will be Exposition of the
Blessed Sacrament from 7:00 to
8:00 PM in the church.
Exposition is for adoration,
quiet time with the Lord. Before your
hectic week begins, come and spend some
time alone with the Lord. Jesus frequently
brought his apostles away to pray with
Him. He invites you to be with Him in
quiet prayer if not for the hour at least for
a few minutes. The hour will conclude
with a brief Night Prayer and
Benediction.
Reminder:
All Fridays of Lent are days of
Abstinence from meat. This obligation
includes everyone who has reached their
14th birthday (no upper limit).

Baptisms are celebrated on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sunday of the
month at 2:00 p.m. in the church. Spanish Baptisms are celebrated
on the 4th Sunday of the month at 2 p.m. Parents are required to
participate in one Sacramental Preparation session. These
meetings are held on the first and third Sunday of each month.
After attending the 9:30am Mass, parents should proceed to the
Parish Center (below the church) for the Baptism Preparation
Class. Godparents are welcome. Please call the rectory to arrange
an interview with a deacon or priest to register for the preparation
session and the Baptism ceremony. Additional information on

September, it’s time to register for Religious Education
classes.
Families new to the Religious Education Program will
need to fill out a “New Family Registration Form.”
These are available on our web site, stkilianre.com, or
you may contact the office for a printed copy.
Families with children currently enrolled in the
program will receive a “Re-Registration Form” in about
two weeks. You may enter an incoming first grader’s
information on page two of the Re-Registration Form.
Re-Registration Forms will be emailed/postal mailed
around Friday, March 20. Please be sure to check
your email starting the weekend of March 21-22.

know was an Irish Martyr who gave his life for his

terminate at the Farmingdale Village Hall for a
ceremony.
Easter Mass Remembrance
The Masses on Easter Sunday will be celebrated for the intentions of those enrolled in the Spiritual Bouquet of Masses.

SOCIAL MINISTRY/OUTREACH
Outreach is our parish community’s response to the Gospel call to help those in need.
We serve anyone who lives within our parish boundaries regardless of religion, race or ethnicity.
We are located at 140 Elizabeth Street but our main entrance is in the parking lot facing Conklin Street.
OUR FOOD PANTRY AND OFFICE IS OPEN MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY, 10AM-2:30PM.
We are also available certain Saturdays by appointment only. Spanish translators are available Tuesdays and Fridays.

We are very excited to be starting a new ministry called “FRIENDLY
VISITORS”!
We are looking for volunteers to sit, talk, play cards or a board game, read, etc. with a
homebound senior in our community for about an hour per week. This is a socialization
program and not a program for doing chores. We will interview, train and background
check all volunteers. If you are interested in learning more about this new volunteer
opportunity, or if you know of a homebound person who would like a weekly visit from

An Invitation
How has God been moving in your life? What are
the moments when you have felt touched by the grace of
the Holy Spirit within you and around you?
Certainly, many of us have had profound
experiences of God’s grace filling us with awe and wonder
that He could touch us so deeply.
News Flash!!! Those moments are not meant for us
to keep to ourselves but to share with others so that they,
too, might reap the rewards of God’s grace. What a better
way to nourish us as a community of faith, the Body of
Christ, than to witness God’s love in action in the hearts of
His people.
To that end, we are inviting you to submit your
testimony of how you have been touched by the grace of
God. Each week, we will print one story in our parish
bulletin in a column entitled “Touched by Grace.” (200 - 350
words.)

2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal
Serving God by Serving Others
The St. Kilian Players are pleased to
announce our summer show for 2015.
This summer will be doing Cole Porter’s
“Kiss Me, Kate.”
Our director for this show is Lynda Diurno.
The show dates are July 18, 19, 24, 25
and 26th.
Anyone going into ninth grade and above are invited to
audition for the show. Audition dates will be Friday March
27th and Friday, April 10 with callbacks on Sunday April
12th. Auditions will be held in the basement of the church
from 7:30PM to 9:00PM. Please be prepared to sing 16
bars of a song of your choice. If you are unable to attend
any of the audition dates, please contact Lynda Diurno
direct at (631)-790-2577.
St. Kilian’s goal for this year is $133,000.00. So far
pledges total $77,430.00 or 58.22% of goal.
Payments received so far total $46,317.00.
Do Parishes benefit in any way from the Appeal?
Resources contributed to the CMA are distributed in
a way that allows our Catholic faith to be lived and
shared throughout our 133 communities. Parishes that
reach goal receive a 20 percent rebate and any paid
gifts raised over that goal generate an 80 percent
rebate to parishes on those gifts. Our parishes use
their rebates to support Parish Outreach programs,
develop special programs for the community, or to
help maintain their physical structures

This spring, couples that have been
married fifty years or more will be
honored at liturgies on Sunday, April 19 at the
Church of St. Lawrence the Martyr in Sayville and on
Sunday, April 26 at the Church of Maria Regina in
Seaford. Both liturgies will begin at 2:30pm.
Couples may register for ONE liturgy.
Registration forms and complete instructions can be
obtained at the rectory. Registration must be
received by the Office of Worship by April 6 for the
April 19 liturgy and by April 13 for the April 26
liturgy.

“And they were asleep out of sorrow.” St. Luke uses those
words to tell us why the disciples fell asleep during Jesus’
agony in the Garden.
FALLING ASLEEP OUT OF SORROW
And Luke says, they fell asleep not because the hour was late
and they were tired from the supper and the wine. They fell
asleep “out of sorrow”, “out of sheer grief”.
That’s a pretty accurate description of why we often sell
ourselves short, refuse to suffer for what’s noble, and choose to
short-circuit tension rather than carry it with patience. We’re like
the disciples in Gethsemane, not bad persons, just a long ways
from what’s best in us because we’re “asleep out of sorrow”.
“We don’t live in the best of all possible worlds,” says the
philosopher Leibnitz. That’s more than an abstract statement.
Most days it’s a fact that grates us, frustrates us, eats away at
our patience and moral fibre, and leaves us living lives of quiet
desperation. We’re far from whole, every one of us. We carry
too many wounds, broken dreams, betrayals, imperfections in
our bodies, and past mistakes.
None of us has been loved perfectly and none of us is loved
perfectly. Every one of us has, in one fashion or other, been
slighted, ignored, not properly valued, put down, taken for
granted, abused. Because of this, all of us carry inside of us a
deep, inchoate sorrow. It’s that sorrow that makes us fall asleep.
What wakes us up? Peter woke up when he heard the cock crow,
saw Jesus’ face, and realized that love stays even after you
betray it. On learning that, he never fell asleep in that way again.
The Gospels make plain: it’s new light, a risen body, an empty
tomb, a resurrection, a rainbow breaking in after the storm, an
unexpected forgiveness, and a second-chance that wake us.
And, as our faith assures us, we have an infinite number of
second-chances even if we have, for most of our lives, settled for
second-best.

5º Domingo de Cuaresma
“Yo les aseguro que si el grano de trigo, sembrado
en la tierra, no muere, queda infecundo; pero si muere,
producirá mucho fruto”. Jesús revela el misterio de su
muerte y resurrección a los que lo escuchan. Con la
imagen del grano de trigo que muere en tierra, Jesús
indica el cómo iba a morir crucificado. De ahora en
adelante el Evangelio de Juan va acompañando a Jesús en
su camino hacia la cruz y hacia la glorificación en
Jerusalén. ¡Dolor y gloria, juntos! Jesús cumple la voluntad
de su Padre, y el Padre con su voz da señal a los que lo
escuchan que el Hijo del hombre, cuando sea levantado en
la cruz, dará lugar a una nueva vida: la Resurrección.
La liturgia de este Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma
nos ayuda a ver el gran significado de la muerte redentora
de Jesús por nosotros. Y Jesús, mientras tanto, nos indica
que dar y recibir están relacionados. O sea, ganamos la
vida eterna del modo que estemos dispuestos a dar la vida
diariamente cumpliendo nuestros deberes con amor y
entrega generosa. No es fácil cumplir como el grano de
trigo que cae en tierra y muere para después dar fruto.
Ser discípulo de Jesús es creer en él. Y seguir su camino
también incluye la cruz. Se trata de empezar de nuevo y
ver la Pascua como un horizonte seguro. Ojalá que
aprovechemos este tiempo de Cuaresma, logrando así
entender que todo el tiempo de nuestra vida es un continuo
movimiento hacia Dios. ¿Qué enseñanza me deja Jesús en
este Evangelio? Entre otras cosas, que debe morir en mí
para renovarme.
