From the Desk of the Pastor
Holy Week begins this weekend. I invite you to consider attending all of the liturgies during the Triduum (Holy Thursday,
Good Friday, Easter Vigil), the holiest days of the year in the Church. These liturgies, in these three days, have always—for
me—defined what it means to be a Catholic and a Christian. On Holy Thursday, we celebrate and remember the night when
Jesus left us the Eucharist, his Body and Blood. On Good Friday, we remember the horror he endured as he made the final
journey to the cross, climbed upon the cross, and allowed himself to be nailed to the cross to redeem us. And then, at the
Easter Vigil, we begin in darkness (remembering the darkness that fell at the death of Jesus) but we progress toward greater
and greater light as we celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection. The Church has unlocked for centuries the richness of these celebrations
in her Triduum liturgies. I invite you to please attend and be apart of these celebrations that have shaped and defined us as
Catholics for over 2000 years!
Please note, the parish offices are closed on Friday, April 3rd and will not reopen until Monday, April 13th.
Peace and God Bless,
-Fr. Prince

hand stress which may be evident for caregivers and those
assisting others in difficult situations or circumstances.
Join us for an opportunity to begin to understand
how to come into the light when darkness seems to be
approaching.

Sunday Supper
Last Sunday was another wonderful opportunity for us to
serve our neighboring brothers and sisters in the Hampton
Roads community. We served 123 people. The Behun family
was this week’s Supper Coordinators and they provided a
hearty meal of spaghetti, meatballs, sausage and salad. We
thank them, the Jaycees, members of the USS Lincoln,
our Sunday Supper regulars, and of course you, our fellow
parishioners for making this possible. Please note that there
will be no Sunday Supper on Easter Sunday, Apr 5, 2015.
As we journey to Holy Week, may the lessons that we have
learned during this Lenten season, help us to remember to
always do our best to be a sign of God’s love those in need.
In doing so may we give them Easter hope and joy. May God
continue to be praised!
Arts & Environment Easter Preparations
Easter is fast approaching and A&E will be in need of
volunteers to hang banners and iron altar cloths, banners

flowers , arrange the lilies display and do general cleaning.
We will start preparing for the Vigil Saturday morning
at 9 a.m. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Contact
Marie-Claude David, (757) 826-0393.

study of important scriptural texts, including Proverbs,
Job, Qohelith (Ecclesiastes), Sirach (Ecclesiasticus), Song of
Songs (Canticle of Canticles), Daniel, Wisdom of Solomon,
and selections from the Gospels as well as from the book
of Psalms. It is taught by Rev. Joseph W. Koterski, S.J. Ph.D.
who is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Fordham
University. Come and join with other parish folks as we seek
to understand the “wisdom” that God offers us that is found
in the Bible and among the people of God.

Encounter the Joy!
For if we have received the love which restores meaning to our lives, how can we fail to share that love with others?
-Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium
What is the new Evangelization?
Often the term evangelization evokes an image of door to door recruitment or calling out biblical admonitions to passersby on
a busy street corner. While certainly these are styles of evangelization, it might be better understood as discovering or having
something really wonderful and wanting to share it with others. Think about reading a great book or dining at a wonderful new
restaurant and wanting to share that experience so others can enjoy it too. Often you tell your family, coworkers or social media
contacts that they really want to read the book or check out the restaurant. Maybe you even give them your copy of the book
or invite them to dine with you at the new restaurant.
In the New Evangelization, what is discovered, renewed and/or cherished is what our evangelization team is calling “the joy”
(and why they call themselves the ICC Joy Team). “The joy” is an awareness of God’s presence in your life – a loving, forgiving,
compassionate presence that Jesus revealed to us through his life and teachings. It is what Pope Francis describes as “the love
which restores meaning to our lives.” So the first step in evangelization is to encounter “the joy” and then the very natural result
of that encounter is to want to share it with others. This sharing may be with words, but is really most authentically shared
through action. Living out your joy in your encounters with others (loving, caring about, and serving others, especially the
least among us) is powerful evangelization.
So when we evangelize (and we are all called to do so), we are not so much recruiting new Catholics as attracting others to the
joy that we have encountered in our relationship with the risen Christ. Of course, one cannot share what one does not have, so
the first step in evangelization is to encounter the joy. This is the focus for our parish in the short term. Check out next week’s
article ICC and New Evangelization to learn more about what is planned for the next year.
