In-situ-experiments in a scanning electron microscope to crack growth
within high strength cast iron
Project
In-situ-experiments in a scanning electron microscope provide a unique insight into the crack
propagation behaviour on a microscopic scale. To establish a complex understanding of the processes at the crack tip crack growth within high strength cast iron should be investigated.
Task
In the project’s context a suitable specimen type will be chosen and be prepared as well as an experimental design will be worked out. Subsequently in-situ-experiments in a scanning electron microscope will be conducted with the assistance of the local staff. The final evaluation of the results
will include, on the one hand, the qualitative description of interdependencies and, on the other
hand, the derivation of quantitative relationships between characteristic fracture mechanical parameters. (The experiments’ volume will be adapted to the thesis time schedule)
