Dear Parishioners,
What is the point of Lent? Why do we pray, fast and give alms? Why go to mass on Sunday? What is
our destination? What is the point of all the activity of our parish?
John Cassian, a monk writing to monks, has much to say about these questions even though he died in the
year 435. Cassian’s Conference to his monks speaks to all the spiritual disciplines mentioned above and
acknowledges the importance of moderation to avoid self righteousness. In the end, he reminds them of
their destination, a deeper love of Christ and his people.
“In the same way, fasting, vigils, scriptural meditations, nakedness, and total deprivation do not constitute
perfection but are the means to perfection. They are not themselves the end point of a discipline, but an
end is attained through them. To practice them will therefore be useless if someone instead of regarding
these as a means to an end is satisfied to regard them as the highest good. One would possess the instruments of a profession without knowing the end where the hoped for fruit is to be found.”
“To cling always to God and to the things of God - this must be our major effort, this must be the road
that the heart follows unswervingly. Any diversion, however impressive, must be regarded as secondary,
low-grade, and certainly dangerous.”

In His great love for us, the Lord Jesus gave us a great miracle of mercy: the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Christ is fully present as He is in Heaven.
St. Faustina comments; “Oh what awesome mysteries take place during the Mass!
…....One day we will know what God is doing for us in each Mass, and what sort of gift He is
preparing in it for us. Only His divine love could permit that such a gift be provided for
us…...this fountain of life gushing forth with such sweetness and power.”(914)

Good Friday “Living” Stations of the
Cross at St. Anthony’s

for the Living Stations of the Cross at our
sharing parish, St. Anthony of Padua in Cicero,
Illinois. We will leave SJB via car pool at 8:00
am Good Friday to journey to St. Anthony’s to
walk the streets surrounding the parish to pray and
experience the Living Stations of the Cross. For

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Is today “Palm Sunday” or “Passion Sunday”? Though now known officially as Palm Sunday of the Passion of
the Lord, confusion is understandable, since before the 1969 reform of the calendar two separate Sundays bore these
titles. Passion Sunday was a week before Palm Sunday. To add to the confusion, the Gospel accounts of the Passion
of the Lord were not read on Passion Sunday, but on Palm Sunday! On Passion Sunday, the cross and statues were
veiled in full purple drapes. The organ had fallen silent at the beginning of Lent, and now the sanctuary bells were
replaced by wooden clappers. The introit (opening chant) for the old Mass of Passion Sunday hints at a reason for
reform: “Do me justice, O God, and fight my fight against a faithless people” (Psalm 42). This liturgy was laden
with references to the “infidelity” of the Jews, a theme that gave rise to inflammatory preaching and, in some places,
attacks against the persons and property of the Jewish people. This does not stand as a “treasure” of any sort in our
tradition. Our authentic tradition, rather, is the ability to reflect and repent and to seek reconciliation with the Jews,
our brothers and sisters in the love and service of God.

HOLY THURSDAY PILGRIMAGE
REVIVAL OF A TIMELESS TRADITION
Immediately following the 7:00 PM Mass of the Lord’s Supper, St. John Brebeuf
Parish offers the opportunity to revive the age-old tradition of the “Visitation of
Churches”. We are invited to pray with our Lord late into the night, through the sacrament
of the Mass, followed by an evening visiting five “Altars of Repose” throughout
Chicago. Chartered school buses will pick us up outside of St. John Brebeuf and will
whisk us from church to church, for our evening of prayer. The Churches we tentatively
plan to visit are: St. Hyacinth Basilica, Holy Trinity, St. Stanislaus Kostka, St. John
Cantius, and St. Mary of the Angels. The evening will end with night prayer at about
midnight, when the buses return us to St. John Brebeuf.
Reservations are not only a must, but they are limited too. Please fill out the form

up a collection on Good Friday, as designated by the
Holy Father. This collection helps support the work
of the Franciscans in the Holy Land. The money is
used to care for the people and places of the Holy
Land. This collection keeps Christianity alive in this
area made holy by the life, suffering, death and
resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

VIRTUS TRAINING
Per Archdiocese policy, all employees and volunteers
working with children, in any Catholic Parish and/or
School must attend a Virtus Training Session, before
beginning their service to their faith community. We will
be offering this training, here at St. John Brebeuf on the

można odnieść do wszystkich wyżej wymienionych dyscyplin duchowych, dlatego ze ukazują
potrzebę przemiany po to, aby uniknąć nieskazitelności. Na końcu przypomina im o ich
przeznaczeniu, którym jest postawa głębszej miłości Chrystusa i jego ludzi.

Po Mszy Świętej Wieczerzy Pańskiej o 7:00 pm, parafia św. Jana Brebeuf oferuje możliwość
uczestnictwa w starożytnej tradycji Nawiedzenia Siedmiu Kościołów. Zapraszamy do modlitwy
z Panem do późnej nocy uczestnicząc w sakramencie Eucharystii, po którym będzie miało
miejsce wieczorne nawiedzenie siedmiu Ołtarzy Spoczynku na terenie Chicago. Wynajęte
autobusy szkolne zabiorą nas z terenu parafii i przewiozą z kościoła do kościoła w ten wieczór
modlitwy. Planujemy odwiedzić następujące parafie: St. Hyacinth Basilica, Holy Trinity, St. Stanislaus Kostka, St.
John Cantius, St. Mary of the Angels. Wieczór zakończy się modlitwą około północy, po powrocie autobusami do
naszej parafii.
