St. Francis of Assisi Parish
March 29, 2015 • Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
......................................................................................
From the Pastor’s Desk
I
hope you are as grateful as I for the parish staff ’s willingness to spend me in reflec ng on the meaning of Lent
as it touches their souls through their ministries, and to
share their reflec ons with us in this column over the past
several weeks. It is easy to simply “do” things out of the
ordinary during this Lenten Season, but it is another thing to
integrate what we “do” for Lent with who we are at the place
where God touches us and we touch others.
It seems that there are four mes a year when the
Church is overflowing with people: Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Passion Sunday (Palm Sunday), and Easter Sunday. Today
is one of those mes. These days mark events in the life of
Jesus that speak to the deepest parts of our spiritual selves,
and seem to go beyond the rules of religious tradi on or pracce. We gather on these days, not because of the fear of sin,
but because something of the human dimension of the life of
Jesus—and, today in par cular, of the sufferings of Jesus, resonates with our lived experience. Something within us drives us
to face the contradic ons in our own lives and thus enter into
the contradic ons of the Passion Sunday liturgy.
The Liturgy on Passion Sunday begins with Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. His entry into Jerusalem, into the
most Holy City, is not casual and discreet! But, at the same
me, his entry is not in a chariot drawn by mighty horses, surrounded by legions of soldiers and guards; instead, he rides a
simple donkey accompanied by the simple people whose lives
he touched and renewed by showing the face and the heart
of a merciful God. His entry is ordinarily triumphal for ordinary people. These people wave simple branches of palm and
olive shou ng praise to what he has accomplished for them.
This is an experience of the moment for these crowds,
an experience of joy and hope for a wonderful future. In
the midst of these crowds, there is no men on of poli cal or
religious authori es. Yet, within a very few days, this clamor
of acclama on and praise turns to denial, betrayal, and a call
for Jesus’ death.
Somehow, then and now, evil quietly speaks. Instead of
following and proclaiming Jesus as the One Who Has Come In
The Name Of The Lord, our minds and hearts can become fickle

to the mood of the day and place. This is the trickster at work!
It is easy to be faithful when that which is of value in our lives
provides favor and grace. But, how hard it is to remain faithful
when it all turns around and our reputa on, self respect, our
very lives are on the line because we iden fy with what was
once a power and, more so, a savior in our lives.
Jesus’ journey into Jerusalem does not end in a celebraon of majesty and power at a stately banquet upon a throne,
with accolades or praise of his authority and power. It ends
with a simple Passover meal with his most in mate friends,
with his throne the cross and his crown, not one of heavy
sparkling gems, but a simple crown of painful thorns. The
last words of Jesus that we hear from Mark are not words of
blessing and gran ng of favors, but of despera on and hopelessness, “My God Why Have You Forsaken Me!”
As the beloved Children of God, we are invited not only
to be present to the events of this Passion Sunday, but also
to iden fy with them—our own experience of acclama ons
and betrayal, as well as the fickleness of our human and
divine rela onships.
The en re Triduum celebra on invites us to be present
to and iden fy with Jesus’ experience. On Holy Thursday, we
are invited to experience the Lord’s Supper and the washing
of the feet. We make present through these ritual acts that
we are part of the deep desire of Jesus to remain with us
through the gi of the Eucharist, the food for the journey of
our lives, where Jesus walks with us in our service and love of
others. The Good Friday liturgy of the Passion, Venera on of
the Cross, along with prayer and the recep on of the reserved
Eucharist, proclaims that, through Jesus’ willingness to die to
his humanity, we are called to let go of all that keeps us from
loving deeply, even to the point of sacrificing all that we hold
dear and important in our lives. The Easter Vigil and Easter
Sunday celebra ons are truly about the new life that bursts
forth when we love deeply and are willing to let go, when we
are filled with the faith that God does not abandon us, but
walks with us in the events of our lives.
May this be The Great Week for each of us….
May the Lord give you peace…. Un l next week….kjl

Holy Saturday/ Easter vigil

I
n just a few short days, we will arrive at our highest holy
days, the Everest of our liturgical year, the core of our story,
the heart of our faith.
W
e begin with the Easter fire, bless
the Easter candle, and in candlelight, remind ourselves of our history
through readings and song. We call upon
our family to join us in a litany of saints,
return the Alleluia, and proclaim the resurrec on in the gospel reading. These readings, the exultet, the blessings of fire
and paschal candle, occur only on this night.
Whether we are ready or not, whether we’ve fulfilled
our good inten ons of Lent or not, we find ourselves on the
doorstep of Triduum—Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday—those
three days that take us from the Last Supper to the empty
tomb, when Jesus gives himself to the world: in a supper
of bread and wine, in the washing of feet, in the Passion of
the crucifixion, in taking our place on the cross, in rising into
forever-with-us. Will you enter?
We ini ate our newest members—24 this year, and
renew our own bap smal vows. Finally, we join one another
in Eucharist.
This year set aside your regular ac vi es and enter into
the holiest days of the year. Take the me. Make me.
Come be renewed in your faith, your rela onship with
God and one another. A recep on for our newest members
directly follows in Brunsman Hall and is open to all.
In the garden of Gethsemane Jesus asks his disciples—
asks us—“remain here with me.”
From the Last Supper to his rising from the tomb—three
days, one glorious liturgy—together let us walk beside Jesus.
Holy Week Schedule
Holy Thursday 7:00 pm
HOLY THURSDAY (April 2)
Mass of the Lord’s Supper 7:00 pm in the Church
followed by
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until 11:00 pm
in Brunsman Hall
No 12:10 pm Mass on Holy Thursday
O
ne Mass is celebrated on this day
remembering the ins tu on of the
Eucharist and the ministry of priesthood.
The gospel focuses on the maundatum, the
direc on Jesus gives to Peter to do as he
has done—serving one another as Jesus
did, as we have had done for us, as we are called to do for
one another.
GOOD FRIDAY (April 3)
Service of the Lord’s Passion with
Adoration of the Cross and Communion
12:10 pm and 7:00 pm
No 12:10 pm Mass on Good Friday
This service is joined to the celebra on of the Passover
meal, now changed from a remembrance of freedom from
oppression and pursuit through the Red Sea to a new life in
God. Jesus recalls all of that in the upper room, yet says to
his friends as he shares the unleavened bread and the blessed
cup, “this is my Body… this is my Blood.”
We end with a procession of the Blessed Sacrament to
the altar of respose and me for reflec on in Brunsman Hall.
Please come and celebrate this most precious gi of Eucharist
in Mass and in reflec on on this holy night.
HOLY SATURDAY (April 4)
Easter Vigil 8:15 pm in the church followed by a
Reception in Brunsman Hall
No scheduled confessions or 5:15 pm Mass
on Holy Saturday
Good Friday 12:10 and 7:00pm
EASTER SUNDAY (April 5)
Mass: 7:30 am, 9:30 am, Noon
O
n this sacred day, we do not
celebrate Mass anywhere in
the world. We recount the passion
of Jesus, the one who laid down his
life for us. We walk with Jesus on his
journey to Calvary, pray for one another and the world. And
we share in the acceptance and honoring of our own crosses,
the difficult and painful areas of our lives that can only be born
with one another, and the firm belief that God can bring new
life and resurrec on out of every sorrow and death.
