KeyNote Title: Innovation in Sustainable Energy Systems
Scientists around the world continue to work on new inventions to
help alleviate problems of clean energy supply and carbon dioxide
emissions. However, the innovation process includes not just the
initial stage of conception of an idea, but also the processes needed
to take an invention to the stage where it is commercialised, applied
and profitably generating revenue. Commercialising an invention to
the point where it is making a useful contribution to commerce and
society is a long and uncertain process. The effort needed can be
likened to an iceberg where the portion above the water represents
development of the initial concept, but underlying this is a much
greater level of work necessary to convert the project to a product.
The 'nine tenths below the water' consists of such stages as
engineering for manufacture, including safety, certification to national
and EU standards, devising the production processes, marketing,
sales, arranging after sales support, etc. In addition it is not always
clear which products will gain public acceptance and sell, and which
will be rejected by the market. Many a business has failed through
overreliance
On invention and insufficient attention to the post invention stages of
new product creation and commercialisation. This talk will review
some recent and emerging developments in clean energy, while at the
same time looking at what is needed to turn inventions into
innovation.

Title: DEVELOPMENT OF OUTDOOR RESEARCH
PLATFORMS AND TESTS ON PHOTOVOLTAIC
MODULES IN THE GREEN ENERGY PARK
IN MOROCCO
Abstract:
Morocco is the largest energy importer in North Africa. The solar program
aims to install 2000 MW of solar power production by 2020. In this context
the keynote intends to introduce the concept of the PV outdoor test platform
that has been set up in the “Green Energy Park”, Ben Guerir, as part of
cooperation between the Moroccan IRESEN, Rabat and the German
Fraunhofer CSP, Halle. This outdoor test platform is designed, combining a
multitude of test-set-ups, in order to investigate and characterize PV modules
in the worst weather conditions and to get a valuable data about their
performances in situ. The aims of the different test-set-ups as well as the
recorded parameters will be presented. Some aspects of module
improvements in design, materials for hot regions like Morocco will be
furthermore introduced.

KeyNote Title:Development and Business opportunities in Mediterranean
countries by valorising agricultural biomass in the context of Circular
Economy and Industrial Symbiosis
MGEF 2015: Mediterranean Green Energy Forum
12
Abstract:
The EU is committed to implement the principles of the waste hierarchy,
which implies the prevention of waste, its reuse and recycling where it is not
prevented, and its energy recovery as suboptimal option. Agriculture
generates co-products, by-products and waste streams that are currently not
properly taken care of both in environmental and economic term. There are
many types of non-food sources that can now be used to produce fuels,
chemicals, and power. The technological development on energy production
from biomass focuses for higher efficiently of processing complex feed stocks.
Beyond reduction and recycling of agricultural waste, co-products and
byproducts, there may be opportunities for new processes enabling
innovative uses of these materials also outside the agricultural sector.
Industrial symbiosis, whereby different actors derive mutual benefit from
sharing utilities and waste materials, requires large scale systemic innovation
with the aim of turning waste from one industry into useful feedstock for
another one. For Mediterranean Countries, facilities utilizing indigenous
renewable sources and designed to supply local communities and
decentralized energy users are in the forefront of energy and environmental
policies. The approach of biomass energy utilization very close or at the place
of origin minimizing transportation and logistics cost provides a means of
boosting sustainable development in rural areas.

CULTURAL HERITAGE BUILDINGS WITH REINFORCING
FRAMES
by Carlo Casalegno, Salvatore Russo, Francesca Sciarretta
PFRP
Abstract: The structural reinforcement of masonry structures belonging to
cultural heritage deserves sustainable and effective techniques to be more and
more developed. The peculiar features of pultruded FRP profiles (PFRP) for
construction, such as the low material density, durability and ease of erection
makes them particularly suitable for the reinforcement of traditional masonry
structures, with particular reference to historical constructions in seismic
sites.
MGEF 2015: Mediterranean Green Energy Forum
13
The capability of PFRP construction profiles for structural reinforcement of
historic buildings is not yet sufficiently explored, although it would allow for
non-invasive and reversible interventions for improving the structural
performance with a very small mass addition. The paper presents preliminary
investigations - in progress at the IUAV University of Venice - concerning a
hypothesis of reinforcement of a traditional masonry building through the
installation of a pultruded FRP frame adjacent to the masonry structure and
connected to it with mechanical fasteners. The scope of the ongoing research
is to explore the possibilities of application of such a reinforcement technique
to different types of assets (concerning structural type, materials, aggregation
and importance), and to quantify its advantages via opportune parameters.

KeyNote Title: Monitoring and Diagnostics for
photovoltaic and hybrid solar PVT Power Plants
Abstract: There are many reasons to monitor a system as relatively expensive
and long-term as a solar installation, such as: to follow up on the energy yield,
to assess the solar system performance and to timely identify design flaws or
malfunctions. These needs for monitoring fall into three main groups: user
feedback,
performance
verification,
system
evaluation/diagnostic.
As a matter of fact, a good monitoring system allows the energy professional
to easily determine that a system is running properly, and gives access to
information that will help to troubleshoot a malfunctioning system.
Consumers generally want to know the overall system production, along with
cost savings or environmental benefit derived from that production. And
nowadays, everyone wants that information in real time. Professionals need
data pushed to them in the form of alerts to system malfunctions (via email or
text message), along with remote access to real-time data that allow them to
drill down to the performance of individual system components and sensors.
An internet-accessible “dashboard” should permit the consumer to observe
near real-time production and review the operating history. The monitoring
system must flag clues to problems with the system. It becomes clear that to
maximize effectiveness, advanced monitoring and more intelligent control
should be brought together in one smart, connected device. An integrated
MGEF 2015: Mediterranean Green Energy Forum
14
control/monitoring system is the most powerful tool available to efficiently
manage PV and solar thermal operations. Once the domain of expensive
industrial supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, these
capabilities are now available in lower-cost, easy-to-use controllers. It has to
be stressed the importance of real-time, live interaction with the PV and ST
systems, with a complete and remotely accessible view of device status and
history. From the monitoring point of view, a PVT plant can be viewed as two
separate systems: a PV system and an ST thermal system. On this regard,
basically, performance measurements of PVT collectors need to be in
agreement with IEC 61215 for the electrical part and with EN 12975-2 for the
thermal part. Yet, the close energetic interactions need to be taken into
account, especially concerning the procedures and conditions of
measurements. After a general overview of the proposed topic, focusing on PV
and PVT systems, results about both a large PV plant and an experimental PVT
system are provided.

KeyNote Title: The design and application of output observers for Wind
Energy Conversion Systems (WECs)
Abstract: There are a growing number of failures of wind turbines so much so
that much many governmental funding bodies are wondering whether it is
worth investing in such a technology. Some typical faults are blades failure
due to high winds, lightening and hail, wear and tear (material fatigue issue)
over time and generator failure. The maintenance cost is high especially when
the turbines are located offshore. In this context there is a need devise simple
and efficient incipient faults detection mechanism so as to prevent a failure
form occurring. In this talk, we are going to propose a new method of fault
detection based on the available measurements. For this we, introduce the
concept of output observers; that essentially provide a set of redundant
measurements on which the fault diagnosis can be performed. We will show
that these observers can only be design using an input-output representation

of the system rather than using a state-space approach. The case of linear
systems will be studied first and then an extension of the design to the
nonlinear case will be made. A case study consisting of a typical WEC will be
considered.

Renewable Energies for Desalination: Some Case Studies
Abstract: Desalination plants have a great potential to solve the lack of
drinkable water in remote areas. However, they consume a lot of energy
(representing around half of the total costs), currently depending on the
availability on cheap fossil fuels. Thus, one of the main criticisms of current
desalination plants is the significant generation of greenhouse gases. This
keynote will review several existing plants that provide most of the energy
from renewable sources: From the integration of solar energy with thermal
desalination processes to the use of wind energy for powering pressure-based
process. The keynote will discuss the difficulties to be overcome (in particular
the problem of balancing energy consumption with production), and the
advantages and disadvantages of each technology.

KeyNote Title: The Mediterranean Case of EPISCOPE Energy Performance
Indicator Tracking Schemes for the Continuous Optimisation of
Refurbishment Processes in European Housing Stocks.
MGEF 2015: Mediterranean Green Energy Forum
16
Abstract: The European project EPISCOPE has been launched in April 2013.
The overall strategic objective of the EPISCOPE project is to make the energy
refurbishment processes in the European housing sector transparent and
effective. This will help to ensure that the climate protection targets will
actually be attained and that corrective or enhancement actions can be taken
in due time, if necessary. As a further step the scope is extended towards the
elaboration of building stock models to assess refurbishment processes and
project the future energy consumption. Pilot actions are conducted in 16
countries to track the implementation of energy saving measures and their
effect on the consumption in practice. A long-term objective is to install
bottom up monitoring procedures in each European country in different
fields: in energy certificate databases, representative surveys, regional or
national census, heating or energy bills, strategic asset development, energy
management. In this presentation the energy efficient refurbishment
processes of the Mediterranean housing stock will be explored. More
specifically, the case study of the optimization of the dwellings refurbishment
processes in Cyprus and the current available results of the project will be
presented.

KeyNote: Optimum Utilisation of Hybrid Advanced
Wave and Wind Energy for Innovative Sustainable
Power Generation and Sea Water Desalination for Clean Environment
Abstract: Access to clean technology remains the linchpin for the global
transition to a resource-efficient, green economy. In many cases, replacing old
technologies with modern, sustainable alternatives can save money, improve
human health, generate ‘green' jobs and benefit the environment all at the
same time. Accelerating a green-technology transition in the MENA region will
pose scientific, technical, political, and cultural challenges. Central to
overcoming those challenges will be a two-part social process: first,
developing a widely shared understanding of the imperatives and
opportunities of the transition, and second, developing a strategic consensus
that leads to coherent, positive action. This process must occur within and

17
among nations. Among renewable power resources, sea waves are a
promising energy carrier because they are able to manifest an enormous
amount of energy in almost all geographical regions. The theoretical global
energy from waves is about 100 times the total hydroelectricity generation of
the whole planet. Producing this amount of energy with fossil fuels would
result in emission of 2 million tons of CO 2. This means that wave energy could
play a central role in attenuating pollutant gases in the atmosphere, as
prescribed by the Kyoto Protocol. Renewable energy technology is steadily
gaining importance in the world energy market as a result of the limited
nature of fossil fuel supplies, the national requirements for a secure energy
supply, as well as the political pressure to reduce carbon emissions. Advances
in technology have facilitated a rapid increase in the penetration levels of
wind power; while ocean wave energy technology has historically struggled to
commercially implement its potential, the last decade has been witness to a
maturing of a number of technologies which are now conducting sea trials
with full scale prototypes. This key note will address a way to develop an
Energy Conversion System (ECS) which uses the mechanical energy harnessed
from waves to desalinate water and generate electricity, and integrate it with
wind power energy conversion. The Wave Hunter Converter (WHC), a novel
device for extracting energy from waves, has been invented by the partner
Blue Power Company. The advantage of the WHC is its capability to directly
transfer a small-displacement of the floats to generate power and desalinate
water without intermediate mechanical stages.

Title: Dynamic Economic Load dispatch Using Quadratic Programming:
Application to Algerian Electrical Network
Abstract: This paper presents a comparative analysis study of an efficient and
reliable quadratic programming (QP) to solve economic load dispatch (ELD)
problem with considering transmission losses in a power system. The
proposed QP method takes care of different unit and system constraints to
find optimal solution. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed QP
solution, simulations have been performed using Algerian test system. Results
obtained with the QP method have been compared with other existing
relevant approaches available in literatures. Experimental results show a
proficiency of the QP method over other existing techniques in terms of
robustness and its optimal search.

Title: Independent Active and Reactive Power Flow Control and Oscillation
Damping Using UPFC
Abstract: The Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) provides a new
advanced technology solution to improve the flexibility, controllability and
stability of a power system. The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC), as an
outstanding part one for regulating power flow among the FACTS, can control
respectively transmission line real power, reactive power and node voltage.
This paper investigates dynamic performance of the UPFC for power flow
control with a series of step changes in rapid succession under power system
steady state and the response of the UPFC to a transmission line faults.
Simulation results, which are carried out on a 5 bus test system and 4 bus
multi-machine electric power system, clearly show effectiveness and viability
of UPFC in rapid response and independent control of real and reactive power
flow, and oscillation damping.

interactive. The move to a smarter grid promises to change the industry’s,
entire business model and its relationship with all stakeholders, involving and
affecting utilities, regulators, energy service providers, technology and
automation vendors and all consumers of electric power. One of the topics
which has a great research interest in smart grids is the field of electrical load
distribution balancing problem because the three phase loads are not identical
resulting in a non-zero neutral current. This problem is a well known for not
having an optimal solution for large-scale systems, where the number of single
phase consumers connected to three phase systems increases especially in
very large-scale electrical distribution systems. This paper presents a new
control technique for an automatic circuit phase change as well as an
optimisation approach using Genetic Algorithms (GA) used to enhance the
solution of electrical load distribution balancing problem. In the first part of
the paper, the system under study is introduced, as well as the various
solutions adopted. In the second part of the paper, a GA formulation and
implementation of the solution is presented. The efficiency of the GA solution
is also discussed.

Title: Study on the insertion of solar generation in the West-Algerian network
Abstract: This paper investigates the consequences of integration of solar
power generation on the voltage collapse and active losses using real network
data. The west-Algerian network 2012 (400kV, 220kV and 60kV) is selected
for study and different cases have been simulated in MATLAB based PSAT
toolbox to improve the static and transient stability of voltage. Indeed,
integration of photovoltaic farms affects the electrical characteristics of
network in static mode, also has an impact on its dynamic behavior. The Solar
Photo-Voltaic Generation (SPVG) may be modeled as constant PV or PQ
generators depending on the chosen control mode. The simulation results
show clearly the effect of SPVG on the power quality of electric power system.

Title: A Sequential AC/DC Power Flow Analysis of a Multimachine Power
System with Integrated HVDC Link
Abstract: Deregulation and privatization is posing new challenges on high
voltage transmission and on distributions systems as well. An increasingly
liberalized market will encourage trading opportunities to be identified and
developed. High voltage power electronics, such as HVDC (High Voltage Direct
Current) and FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) provide the
necessary features to avoid technical problems in heavily loaded power
systems; HVDC offers most advantages: it can be used for system
interconnection and for control of power flow as well. The major benefit of
HVDC is its incorporated ability for fault-current blocking, which is not
possible with synchronous AC links. In addition, HVDC can effectively support
the surrounding AC systems in case of transient fault conditions and it serves
as firewall against cascading disturbances. In this paper, the well-known
Newton-Raphson method for the load flow analysis is modified to achieve
compatibility for a.c.-d.c. systems with integrated d.c. links in the a.c. network,
using the sequential method for the load flow analysis of a 29 bus
multimachine system.

Title: Influence of Ambient Conditions on Thermal Properties of Photovoltaic
Cells
Abstract: The temperature of PV (Photovoltaic) modules is one of the most
important factors because it affects both the efficiency of a photovoltaic
module and the energy load and it’s also affected by several ambient
conditions. Among these conditions, there is ambient temperature, direct
irradiance and wind speed. There have been many studies that determine the
effect of these parameters on the efficiency and performance of PV cells; but
there is no particular study that has discussed the influence of these
parameters on the thermal parameters of PV cells. This paper evaluates the
effects of ambient conditions on the Photovoltaic module’s thermal
characteristics of two photovoltaic modules: crystalline and amorphous
silicon technologies. The influence of these factors should be taken into
account so as to have a deep insight in solar cell design.

Abstract: Microclimate is the most important consideration in designing and
building outdoor spaces, yet it is also the most difficult and challenging area to
understand and apply. For that, this research aims to study and analyze the
effect of green on climates, thermal and visual comfort in urban external
spaces. The experimental method used calls upon the techniques of
observation and measurements «in situ». An application on a real case of an
external space located city center town of Constantine (Algeria),
Mediterranean climate, hot and dry. The aim is to assess whether people
located under tree shade experience comfort or stress in open spaces during
hot-dry season. The specificity of this study is to use a quantitative analysis
through site measurements together with a qualitative analysis through
comfort observation and a series of field simulation are used by software tool,
TownScope3.2. The objective of this research is to compare the performance
of an area shaded by trees to a full insolated area. The results confirm the role
of the green in urban spaces by the shade and the degree of coverage which
influences the quality of life, the creation of urban ambience and on the
situations of thermal and visual comfort for this type of climate.

Title: Simulation and Validation of PV Generator Metaheuristic Model in Sight
of Fault Diagnostic
Abstract: A PV generator can be subjected to many faults that can either
reduce strongly its performance or make it out of order completely. So, a
system for the diagnostics of most common faults could be a feasible solution
to ensure the maximum yearly production of a PV generator. To remove the
high probability of damaging the PV cells when they are exposed to a certain
faults, such as irradiance and thermal mismatches, it is worth investigation a
diagnostics tool to detect promptly abnormal operation conditions. It is
preferable to exploit a precise simulation model to produce the same
characteristics at different operating conditions even in case of defects like
partial shading. In this context, we propose a PV generator model, based on
one diode equivalent circuit model developed by means of a metaheuristic
technique called ABC-DE, to simulate a real PV generator. The simulation
model was validated experimentally at normal and abnormal operating
conditions for a real PV generator formed by three PV polycrystalline silicon
modules connected in series. The experimental validation confirms the
feasibility of the proposed model to act as a reference in sight of diagnosing
the most occurring PV generator defects.

Title: Faults diagnostic and reconfiguration of Three-level boost converter.
Simulation study
Abstract: Power converters have an essential part in maintaining normal
operation of all renewable energy production systems. Therefore, the
reliability of the converters is crucial, because a default in these circuits can
lead to breakdown or dysfunction of the whole production chain if no defects
tolerant strategy was applied. This paper presents a simulation of a
photovoltaic energy conversion chain for the production of electrical energy
on isolated sectors with faults diagnostic and reconfiguration of a converter.
The production system is consisting of a photovoltaic panel, a three-level
boost converter an MPPT algorithm and a faults diagnostic bloc. A method for
the detection, localization and reconfiguration of an open circuit fault due to a
failure of one or two power switch of the Three-level boost converter is
proposed. The results of different simulations of the whole conversion chain,
performed under MATLAB/Simulink, were used to evaluate the performance
of the proposed methodology.

transfer and flow characteristics over fin surfaces. The aim of the present
paper is to determine the effect of fin spacing and tube diameter on heat
dissipation and pressure drop in eccentric annular-finned tube. For a range of
Reynolds numbers, this study analyzes the effects of fin spacing and fin tube
diameter on heat transfer and flow characteristics. A satisfactory qualitative
and quantitative agreement was obtained between the numerical predictions
and the results published in the literature. For a tube shift St =12 it was found
that the effect of fin spacing and tube diameter on heat transfer rate and
pressure drop is of the same way than the case of concentric fin-tube.

Title: Simulation and optimization of a solar absorption cooling system for
Batna, Algeria
Abstract: The global primary energy demand has increased rapidly due to
increasing population and industrialization. More than a third of the energy
demand in the world is used in the residential sector. Energy consumption in
the world by the HVAC equipment (heating, ventilation and air conditioning)
in buildings ranging from 16 to 50% of total energy consumption. Currently
the most popular cooling systems using solar thermal energy to produce cold,
are closed systems using absorption machine which base their operation in
the production of cold on hot water provided by solar collectors. The main
objective of this work is to develop a computational model that allows the
simulation of an hourly basis for an absorption refrigeration system assisted
by solar energy and natural gas as auxiliary fuel. This model will be developed
using the dynamic simulation program TRNSYS, considering three specifics
areas of work: implementation of the calculation model for the absorption
refrigeration system to ensure a thermal load of 25 KW and a parametric
optimization of components, which will make possible an optimum
dimensioning of the solar absorption system in the region of Batna.

Title: A Brief Introduction to Building Information Modeling (BIM) and its
interoperability with TRNSYS
Abstract: Hand-drafted print, sketching and hand modeling were the
standard for building designs before the advent of computer aided design
(CAD) systems . Nowadays CAD systems are better understood, their adoption
increased until the 2D, 3D CAD system and the virtual reality became the
norm. Their natural evolution has given rise to a new and more complex
generation of building design tools known as building information modeling,
or BIM. There is insufficient clarity about what BIM is, although this is
improving, and there is much shared understanding. There is agreement that
BIM is not just software. BIM is not just CAD, or geometric data. BIM is a
collaboratively generated and maintained, data rich, information source for
the life of the design process and beyond. In this paper , we present briefly the
greatest value derived from BIM in the use and maintenance of buildings and
the use of TRNSYS with BIM.

Title: A dynamic based path tracking controller for a fast rover
Abstract: The paper presents a path tracking controller for a fast rover which
has independent front and rear steering. The paper develops first the dynamic
model of the vehicle moving on a horizontal plane and validate with a real
robot. Next, the projection of the position of the vehicle in the absolute
reference frame is used to define the kinematics nonlinear model. We present
a new approach to solve a tracking path problem by applying nonlinear
continuous-time generalized predictive control (NCGPC). The model
composed by combing the kinematic model of the path-tracking presented by
the position of the vehicle (X,Y) with the dynamic model of the vehicle. That is
validated using the real robot at different velocities. Using this model a
nonlinear predictive control (NCGPC controller) is computed, dedicated to
achieve an accurate path tracking despite the dynamical phenomena and the
bad grip conditions. Then, which is tested by using Matlab-Simulink/Adams
co-simulation. Simulation results show good control accuracy and appear to
be robust with respect to environment and robot state changes.

Title: Tire longitudinal grip estimation for improved safety of vehicles in offroad conditions
Abstract: In this paper an on-line observer that allows to monitor the soiltire contact longitudinal stiffness is proposed. It is focused on off-road vehicles

driver about the longitudinal stability and/or correct his actions. Indeed, in
the off-road applications, vehicles are frequently subject to ground changes
and high slopes, causing fatal loss of control – slipping, rollover, etc... The
proposed approach has been tested on a grape harvester in various conditions
and its output evaluated with respect to an estimation based on expensive but

road motion, submitted to low and varying grip conditions. As a result, an
observer using several layers is developed to account for sliding. This permits
to feed a dynamical model of the ATV, which is on-line adapted and
consequently relevant. This model is exploited in two ways. First, it permits to
estimate on-line the Lateral Load Transfer (LLT), representative of the level of
stability. Second, the model is reversely used in order to derive the velocity
leading to a risk of rollover. This later value can be considered as the maximal
admissible speed and is consequently used as the maximal admissible speed
to warrant stability.

Abstract: In this paper, we present the design, the realization and the
experimentation of a photovoltaic (PV) system provided with a sun tracker
reliable and low cost operating at dual axis. The tracker's role is to orient the
PV generator, whose weight may reach 9 Kg, perpendicular to the sun with
very good accuracy. This tracking based on the use of four LDR sensors, which
detect the intensity of light scattered by the sun a processing unit, from
command and control (UTCC), which manages all of the sun tracking tasks
(the end detection of parcours, regulation of the power supplied by the PV
panels (Command MPPT,... ). The results obtained show a significant
improvement of the energy produced, compared to conventional PV
installations where generators are fixed and oriented south at a tilt 45°.
During a day of operation, improvement could reach 41% and consumption of
the tracking does not exceed 0.55% of the energy production produced by the
PV generator (an improvement of 5 % compared to existing trackers).

Title: BIOCHAR PRODUCTION IN ALGAL CASCADE BIOREFINERIES
Abstract: In order to develop a bio-based economy, with all its related
opportunities for growth and employment, holistic and sustainable
approaches are needed including a greatly improved material and energetic
utilization of biomass and wastes. In this contest, biorefineries can take on an
important task in this process. Algae (micro and macro) are considered a
future biorefinery feedstock and incorporate costly processes which can
determine the sustainability of algae-based products. The algae biorefinery
process chain consists essentially of system components for the pretreatment and preparation of algae, as well as for the separation of algae
components (primary refining) and the subsequent conversion/processing
steps (secondary refining) as well as the valorization of by-products of the
processes. The by-products that occur as a result of primary- and/or
secondary refining can be used to supply process energy or, where applicable
and in compliance with statutory requirements, they can be further

phenols, chlorinated or generally halogenated organics, also biological
treatment is not suitable for process variations such as thermal and organic

such as photocatalytic processes, Fenton reagent techniques,
electrooxidation, electrocoagulation and flotation and Ozone oxidation are
mainly used for the treatment of these effluents. As well as being a powerful

Title: Sustainability assessment of CHP production through biomass and
waste glycerol gasification
Abstract: Crude glycerol is by-product from biodiesel production needing
appropriate management. Despite of the wide range of applications of pure
glycerol in food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and many other industries, the
cost of refining crude glycerol to a high purity is too high, especially
regarding medium and small scale biodiesel producers. Thermochemical
conversion is discussed in this work, having a further insight on pyrolysis
and gasification. The idea of co-processing crude glycerol from the biodiesel
process with lignocellulosic biomass at gasification power generation plants
is challenging. The resulting biomass-based fuels after pretreatment with
glycerol are evaluated comparing with the raw biomass feedstock in terms of
heating value, pretreatmment energy demands, overall efficiency of
conversion, changes in emissions from the performed pretreatment stage and
overall integration with gasification from the point of view of energy
consumption, reliability, operating problems and storing problems. The
sustainability analysis of the described system was based on technological,

gas emission profile. Social and economic criteria show the potential gains

Title: Temperature effect on the biogas production by biomass conversion of
wastewater
Abstract: In this work the valorization of mud from urban water treatment is
considered. These muds are rich in organic matter in order to produce biogas
such as methane. Physic chemical parameters has been studied which it
simulated by laboratory anaerobic digester and energy addition.
Mud methanisation process is conducted in a closed vessel (prototype of
digester) operating at constant temperatures between 30 and 60 °C where
bacteria activity are implied after taking away of a quantity of active primary
wet mud. Temperature distribution in the digester prototype has been
carried by numerical simulation using the calculation code and values
obtained in experimental simulation. Results showed that the amount of
produced biogas depends on the physico-chemical parameters such as
temperature, reactional time, waste concentration and moisture content.
Muds contain significant amounts of nitrogen in two forms. This promotes
the anaerobic methane fermentation.

Abstract: Hybrid energy applications based on renewable energy sources are
becoming more and more desirable every day. They have increased the
economic attractiveness of renewable electric energy generation. And because
of the sudden fluctuations of the load requirements, the main attribute of such
Hybrid Systems is to be able to generate energy at any time by optimally using
each source. In this article, we have proposed a combination between a sizing

Title: An improved multi-layer thermal model for photovoltaic modules
Abstract: An essential task in devising photovoltaic power plant energy
production capacities is based on the evaluation of a PV module thermal
behavior from typical meteorological conditions in a given place. In this
context up to 5 °C error in the operating temperature can be considered
acceptable and so simplified single-layer models (SLM) can be adopted. In this
case the PV module is approximated as a single slab with uniform thermal
characteristics. On the other hand, multi-layer models (MLMs) allow not only
to evaluate more precisely the PV cell temperature but also to calculate both
front and back layer temperatures through at least a 3 temperatures multilayer models (3T-MLMs). Front and back layer temperatures, especially the
back layer temperature, can be measured during the operation of a PV
module, so it is likely to tune on-line the thermal model and calculate very
precisely the inner temperature. MLMs need to solve thermal energy balance
equations between the PV module and the surrounding environments. Hence,
both radiative and convective thermal fluxes ought to be calculated. This study
introduces an innovative MLM, with the aim to evaluate more precisely the
front and back cover superficial temperatures. The mathematical model that
describes the thermal behavior of the PV module has been implemented in
Matlab environment. The predicted thermal behavior of the PV modules is
described and checked against measured data. The numerical results put also
in evidence the uncertainties introduced by the environmental variables
(ambient temperature, irradiance, wind speed) measurements.

Title: Effect of Fin Spacing and Tube Diameter on Eccentric Annular-Finned
Tube Heat Exchangers
Abstract: The use of 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is proposed to
simulate the conjugate conduction-convection of heat transfer problems in
heat exchangers. The numerical simulation results allow us to evaluate the
heat transfer coefficient over fin surfaces and the pressure drop. The aim of
the present paper is to determine the effect of fin spacing and tube diameter
on heat dissipation and pressure drop in eccentric annular-finned tube. In
addition, this study analyzes the effects of fin spacing and fin tube diameter on
heat transfer and flow characteristics for a range of Reynolds numbers. A
satisfactory qualitative and quantitative agreement was obtained between the
numerical predictions and the results published in the literature. For a tube
shift St =12 it was found that the effect of fin spacing and tube diameter on
heat transfer rate and pressure drop is of the same way than the case of
concentric fin-tube.

proceeded in this work to develop materials using clay and expanded perlite
and studying the effect of variation of volume fraction of expanded perlite and
calcination on the thermal properties of the composite clay-expanded perlite
so as to manufacture bricks done from those materials. The first step in this
study is the chemical characterization of the clay by means of X-ray
diffraction. The results show that the clay sample is mainly made up of Illite/
muscovite. The second step is the comparison of thermal properties of clayexpanded perlite before and after calcination. For the thermal
characterization Hot plate and Flash methods were used on samples of clay
and clay with expanded perlite .Finally a Comparison of the experimental
results with analytical models of equivalent thermal conductivity was done to
confirm the results.

Title: The Impact of Oil Prices on Economic Activity in Administrated Price
Structure: the Case of Tunisia
Abstract: This article has for a core objective the handling of the established
relation between oil price variation and certain macroeconomic variables, in
this particular case GDP, RMM, CPI, Ex-factory price. The study in Tunisia is
based on quarterly and monthly data from the period going from 2000 to
2011 revealed three important facts. First, the conducted analysis has proven,
at the level quarterly a significant causality relation (in the Granger sense)
between oil price and inflation on the one hand and oil price and industrial
production on the other hand.. Second at the level of the monthly analysis, the
conducted study allowed us to identify the nature of inflation, which is said to
the production cost through introducing a new variable which is ex-factory
price. Third, the conducted study allowed us to study the asymmetric relation
between Brent oil price and the monetary mechanism in an administered
price regime.

Title: Signal treatment method to properly extract the Time Delay feature to
characterize nonlinear systems
Abstract: Efficient energy usage of industrial machinery to increase its
availability, safety and economic savings issues have spur strong research to
develop maintenance techniques based on the actual equipment operating
condition. Machines normally operate in a linear range, but when
malfunctions occur nonlinear dynamics might set in reducing the system
energetic efficiency. Other works, and by the first author, show that nonlinear
feature analysis applied to monitoring the condition and detect machinery
malfunctions, can be effective tools to predict/plan maintenance. Calculations
of nonlinear features depend on the Time Delay , a fundamental parameter.
Using a new proposed method the Time Delay nonlinear feature is extracted
from the classical E. Lorenz system where packages based on Takens’
Theorem and Wolf algorithm are implemented by both, M. Perc and by
Marwan et-al [2, 3], the latter pertinently modified by the authors to realize
the analysis and test our proposed method. In the international literature
currently there does not exist criteria, nor methodology providing guidelines
for robust extraction of these nonlinear features. Important merits of the
method are robustness, that it allows discriminating transients due to initial
conditions and/or by perturbations as well as correctly detect systems with
slow rates of convergence towards asymptotic equilibrium points, and it is
susceptible to implement on automated computational packages

relations
Abstract: This paper deals with the enhancement of component (plant) faults
isolation. Hence, the structural bond graph model is used to establish a new
graphical algorithm for fault structural decoupling, to generate residuals with
enhanced fault isolation. The residual generator is based on Analytical
Redundancy Relations (ARRs) scheme. To perform the structural decoupling,
a new bond graph element is introduced; it is termed Effort and Flow
Propagator (or join) element. It enjoys with two benefits: it avoids computing
unknown variables that arise after the structural decoupling, and it allows
homogenizing the process of residuals generation by using solely graph tools.
An example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed fault
structural decoupling technique.

by quantifying how much time is left until functionality is lost. In addition, it
can be used to improve the characterization of the material proprieties that
govern damage propagation for the structure being monitored. RUL can be
estimated by using three main approaches, namely model-based, data-driven

Abstract: This paper presents a Gravitational Search meta-heureustic

under capacitor switching constraints. The optimum capacitor allocation
solution is found for the system of feeders fed through their transformer and
not for any individual feeder. The main advantages due to capacitor
installation, such as capacity release and reduction of overall power and

capacitor-switching transients are taken into account. These constraints are
extremely important if pole-mounted capacitors are used together with
station capacitor bank. Gravitational search algorithm is used as an

Title: Corona Current and Corona Losses Computation on HVOTL Using
ATP/EMTP
Abstract: In Electrical systems the overvoltage’s can be due to lightning and
switching strikes, which accompany with an important phenomenon
occurring on transmission lines propagating along the line, where is the
corona discharge. The inception corona discharge depends on the spatial
distribution of the electric field and the atmospheric conditions; it is
associated in power system with power losses, audible noise, radio and
interference radio and television, and production of oxidants. In the present
study we have using a coaxial geometry for computing the corona current and
corona losses on the high voltage Overhead transmission lines HVOTL. The
present paper considers the simulation of corona losses resulting from surge
voltages on transmission lines and the effect of these losses on the surge
voltages. Corona effects can be modeled in terms of a ‘corona capacitance’
which can be considered as a constant capacitance or as a non-linear function
of the instantaneous voltage appearing on the line. For this modeling and
simulation we used the Alternative Transients Program version of the
Electromagnetic transients program (ATP/EMTP).

Title: Ferroresonance occurence in a potential transformer
Abstract: Ferroresonance is a phenomenon that appears in electric power
system which contains a nonlinear inductance and a capacitance. Through
identified since early 1920s, the phenomenon steals little understood today.
This paper describes ferroresonance by considering an existing real case
scenario including a single-phase equivalent transformer model 1200/1138kV/115V/69V connected to the circuit breaker including its grading
capacitance and the influence of shunt capacitor of the bas bar or even the line
taken in account as the ground capacitance. The influence of the core-loss and
the core-saturation degree has also been discussed. Simulation result has been
initially validated by recorded experimental test results. Those simulation
tests were carried out on a single phase distribution system using ATPDraw
simulator. However, graphical method précising certain operating points were
used to explain choices of parameters’ models contributing to the occurrence
of such phenomenon. The accomplishment of a suitable simulation model
allows the sensitivity studies to be performed in order to determine the
degree of influence of various parameters on ferroresonance appearance and
modes. It also proposes a duping or even a suppression solution of the
phenomenon.

Title: Least squares method identification of corona current-voltage
characteristics and electromagnetic field in electrostatic precipitator
Abstract:
This paper aims to analysis the behavior of DC corona discharge in wire-toplate electrostatic precipitators (ESP). Current-voltage curves are particularly
analyzed. Experimental results show that discharge current is strongly
affected by the applied voltage. The proposed method of current identification
is to use the method of least squares. Least squares problems that of into two
categories: linear or ordinary least squares and non-linear least squares,
depending on whether or not the residuals are linear in all unknowns. The
linear least-squares problem occurs in statistical regression analysis; it has a
closed-form solution. A closed-form solution (or closed form expression) is
any formula that can be evaluated in a finite number of standard operations.
The non-linear problem has no closed-form solution and is usually solved by
iterative.

Title: Modeling and Identification of Collection Efficiency Process of the
Electrostatic Precipitator
Abstract: In this paper, a simple yet robust identification method for a linear
monotonic process, derived from steps tests, is proposed. The proposed
method outperforms the existing estimation methods that use step-test
responses. The effectiveness of the identification method has been
demonstrated through a number of simulations a real-time test. The
experiments were performed with incense smoke particles having a mean size
of about 0.28 µm. An aerosol spectrometer was employed for characterizing
the size distribution of these particles at the outlet of the electrostatic
precipitator (ESP). Then, the total and fractional collection efficiencies were
estimated. Various DC applied voltages in the case of positive polarities have
been under consideration. The results obtained with the aerosol spectrometer
show that the performances of the ESP increases with the applied voltage
(range: 10 to 40 kV) and the particle diameter (range: 0.2 to 0.7 µm). This
paper proposes a modification to the classic Strejc Predictor, known since
several decades as an effective control method for the pure delay noxious
effect in the control loop systems. The modification consists in the use of a
high order model for the system, using an idea of Strejc, instead of the first
order model. This allows better approximation to high order systems.

Title: Characteristics of DC Corona Discharge in Wires-two Plates
Electrostatic Precipitator at Variable Air Humidity
Abstract: In the present work an experimental investigation has been carried
out on the influence of the air humidity or the water vapor injected in the
incoming air flow on DC corona discharge parameters in a wires-two planes
electrode configuration. To characterize the behavior of the corona discharge
for both positive and negative corona, the current-voltage characteristics are
subjected to an analysis using the model of Cooperman wich derives the
quadratic Townsend’s law and the general formula proposed by Meng et al.
The experimental results show that the discharge current is strongly
influenced by the level of air humidity. Moreover the corona current becomes
very small with the applied voltage beyond Hr = 90%, because the particle
size is increased by condensation. It was demonstrated that the Coopeman's
model is reliable to determine the mobility of the charge carriers in the drif
region.

Abstract: An experimental study of an Earth-to-Air Heat Exchanger (EAHX)
for air refreshment connected to a residential building in Marrakech has been
performed. The EAHX is constituted of 3 PVC pipes of 72 m length each buried
at 2-3m in the building’s garden. Each pipe is equipped with a fan which forces
ambient air into the pipe to get fresh air and then blow it into the building.
The EAHX was monitored during 38 days of summer 2013. Dataloggers for
temperature and humidity measurements were installed inside one of the
EAHX pipes. Results of this monitoring are presented in terms of temperature
and humidity profiles and analyzed to assess the energy performances of the
EAHX for air refreshment in Marrakech climate. It is shown that the EAHX is a
good semi-passive system for air refreshment as its outlet temperature is
quasi-constant during summer and equal to 25°C, while the outside
temperature reaches up to 40.8°C.

Title: Enhancement of thermal inertia and experimental study of thermal
behavior of two locals ‘test’ with and without PCM— A wallboard new PCM
material is experimentally investigated in this paper to enhance the thermal
behavior of light weight building internal
Abstract: A wallboard new PCM material is experimentally investigated in
this paper to enhance the thermal behavior of light weight building internal
wall, we conducted a comparative study of passive heat balance in two
cavities scale 1 built in the Faculty of Sciences Aïn Chock, Casablanca. The
experimental consist of two identical cells, the reference cavity is standard
and the other cavity incorporate a phase change material (PCM) which fusion
begins at a temperature of 22°C and ends at about 45°C. In this experimental
and preliminary study, we equipped the two cells by a set of thermocouples
and equipment for measuring the necessary physical variables for the
identification of the thermal efficiency of the cell with MCP. The results of this
study show that, first, the oscillation amplitude of the inside temperature
decreases greatly in the cavity with PCM. On the other hand, there is time shift
(delay) between these oscillations and those of the internal temperature of
the reference cavity. This shows the ability of PCM to increase the thermal
inertia of the walls.

Title: A field study of thermal comfort assessment and Users “Perceptions” in
office buildings - Case of arid areas with hot and dry climate
MGEF 2015: Mediterranean Green Energy Forum
45
Abstract: Between objective and subjective, the determination of the thermal
comfort notion and the finality of this work are to manage and to improve the
evaluation method of thermal comfort by the analysis of the various
intervening parameters quantitatively and qualitatively [1]. With an approach
under “single condition” with regard to the thermal comfort of the interior
environments, significant cultural, social and contextual factors are ignored
and can lead to an exaggeration of the needs for air-conditioning [4].
Therefore, the anxiety will be set on the strategies of thermal comfort real
evaluation in the office buildings of various types and in a zone concerned by
an extreme climate, with an aim of adopting accessible solutions to the
architects, with means which are familiar for them. Thermal comfort is
difficult to measure because it is highly subjective. It depends on the air
temperature, humidity, radiant temperature, air velocity, metabolic rates, and
clothing levels and each individual experiences these sensations a bit
differently
based
on
his
or
her
physiology
and
state.
According to the ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 55-2010, thermal comfort is defined
as “that condition of mind which expresses satisfaction with the thermal
environment and is assessed by subjective evaluation[13].”Also known as
human comfort, thermal comfort is the occupants’ satisfaction with the
surrounding thermal conditions and is essential to consider when designing a
structure that will be occupied by people. A cold sensation will be pleasing
when the body is overheated, but unpleasant when the core is already cold. At
the same time, the temperature of the skin is not uniform on all areas of the
body.

Title: Influences of water droplet on the flashover voltage of Silicone
Insulating Surface under AC voltage
Abstract: This paper deals with the Influences of water droplet on the
flashover voltage of Silicone Insulating Surface with non-uniform electric field
systems. The tests were carried out on a rectangular sample under AC voltage.
A rod-rod electrode system is used. The findings of this work indicate that the
performance of the samples decreases with the presence of water drops on
their surfaces. Further, Experimental results emanated from this study show
that there is a limiting number of rows from which the flashover voltage of the
insulation is minimal and constant, from which two consecutive electric arcs
can develop independently one of the other until the flashover of the
insulation. The value of this limiting width is about 7.5 cm
Finally, it is concluded that the system withstand voltage increases when the
row of droplets on the electrode axis is removed.

Title: Transient Electromagnetic Field Radiated by Grounding Systems Caused
by Lightning Strike in a Dissipative Half-space
Abstract: In this work, we propose a method for the calculation of the
electromagnetic field radiated by a grounding system in a semi-infinite
dissipative medium subjected to a current excitation generated by the
lightning strike. The assessment of the current distribution on the grounding
system due to a transient excitation is obtained by solving Pocklington’s
equation using the method of moments. A new method for the calculation of
the transient electromagnetic field following the injection of a lightning
current or short circuit is also developed. This method is based on the concept
of the hertzian dipoles and the asymptotic expansion of a single dipole. A
MATLAB computer program has been developed for the determination of the
induced currents. The program is validated by comparing its results with
those obtained with the commercial software NEC 4.

Title: Gravitational Search Optimization To Shunt Capacitor Allocation In
Algerian Radial Distribution Power System
Abstract: This paper presents a Gravitational Search meta-heureustic
optimization method to shunt capacitor placement on distribution systems
under capacitor switching constraints. The optimum capacitor allocation
solution is found for the system of feeders fed through their transformer and
not for any individual feeder. The main advantages due to capacitor
installation, such as capacity release and reduction of overall power and
energy losses are considered. The capacitor allocation constraints due to
capacitor-switching transients are taken into account. These constraints are
extremely important if pole-mounted capacitors are used together with
station capacitor bank. Gravitational search algorithm is used as an
optimization tool. An illustrative example for Algerian example is presented.

Title Energy Efficient Refurbishment for the Mediterranean houses
- Investigating Energy Conservation in Terrace Dwellings.
Abstract: The building sector in Europe is responsible for an
estimated 40% of the total energy consumption. It is well
established that the reduction of building energy consumption
necessitates energy efficient renovation of the existing buildings.
In order to achieve this objective it is necessary to document the
existing building stock. This paper focuses on the existing terrace
housing in the Mediterranean region and specifically in Cyprus.
The processing of the statistical data was carried out and the
building typologies were developed based on a harmonised
structure for European building typologies according to the IEE
EPISCOPE
project.
A representative terrace housing complex, of the corresponding
building typology, was used as showcase for demonstrating the
energy performance and the potential of energy savings, from
energy conservation measures (ECMs) and interventions on the
building envelope and the electromechanical systems. Three units
of different location in the terrace building complex were selected
to carry out comparative studies for their energy performance
and
classification.
The effectiveness of the strategies and the techniques towards
minimising the energy consumption and the greenhouse gas
emissions are simulated with the use of iSBEMcy tool, This is the
official governmental software in Cyprus used for the
categorization of energy efficiency in buildings and the calculation
of CO2 emissions, according to the European Directive
2002/91/EC. The study uses information from the database, of
the thermal characteristics of the building envelope and of the
electromechanical systems, which was developed by the
European, IEE Episcope Project, for the terrace residential
buildings.
This research aims to fill in the current knowledge gap of the
energy-related characteristics of the specific building typology.
Building typologies can be a useful instrument to facilitate the
energy performance assessment of the building stock

Title: A field survey of winter indoor temperatures and
energy consumption in low-income households in Cyprus
Abstract: Urban residents in industrialized countries typically spend
70-90% of their time indoors. The indoor temperature in houses
is one of the main parameters describing the thermal comfort and
indoor air quality, as it is also related to the energy consumed for
heating. The main aim of this research is to examine the indoor
temperatures of low-income dwellings in Cyprus, and to perform
analysis and comparative studies of their energy consumption
and
indoor
thermal
performance,
during
winter.
The analysis is based on a survey of ten (10) low and very low
income dwellings selected from the coastal city of Limassol. The
indoor temperatures, the economic aspects and the energy
consumption data are collected and analysed in order to evaluate
their
impact
on
the
low
income
households.
The temperature monitoring has been carried out using data
loggers and the measurements were performed for the period
between January and February of 2014. Furthermore, a
questionnaire survey based on the LARES study of WHO was
contacted amongst the occupants of the houses, in order to
develop an understanding of their economic circumstances and
their perception of their housing conditions. Comparative and
analytical studies of the indoor environment, the energy
consumption and the users’ behaviour of the various low-income
houses were performed. It is evident from the results of the
study, that the temperatures were influenced by the occupants’
energy behaviour..

Title: Thermal Performance Assessment of a Green House in
Marrakech Region
Abstract: This study concerns with dynamic simulation of a green
house in Marrakech region (Morocco) which integrates several
passive systems and techniques using local materials. The
objective of this study is to assess the thermal performances of
three passive systems, namely 10 cm hemp insulation, hollow
core slab with 20cm air gap and 50cm of Bouskoura and porphyry
rock for high thermal inertia. Simulations were conducted during
one year using the multi-zone model of TRNSYS software. The
effects of the passive systems on air temperature inside all zones
and the cooling/heating loads of the building were analyzed for
two configurations: the real house (ZITOUNE) and the STANDARD
one. The latter refers to materials commonly used in Marrakech
region with no passive systems. The results indicate that
gathering all the three studied passive techniques reduce the
cooling load by 90% and the heating load by 50% compared to
the STANDARD configuration.

Title: Dynamic modeling of thermal behaviour of a solar floor heating system
for a HAMMAM in Marrakech
Abstract: The objective of this paper is to study the energy performances of a
solar system for space heating of a bathroom through a heated floor
(HAMMAM). Two configurations with or without thermal storage were
compared. The dynamic simulation of the HAMMAM coupled with the floor
heating system was conducted using TRNSYS software. Simulation results
show that the system without thermal storage allows the HAMMAM air
temperature to reach the desired one, since it ranges between 34.7 °C and
36.8 °C for a sunny day, while the system with thermal storage leads to at least
5 °C air temperatures lower depending on the storage volume. In addition, the
latter allows having quasi-constant floor temperature that depends on the
storage volume, so it avoids day/night temperature large fluctuations thanks
to thermal storage inertia. Nevertheless, the configuration of the floor heating
system with a storage tank does not achieve the desired temperature for the
floor of the HAMMAM.

Title: Reduced Graphene Oxide as a Counter Electrode for CdS Quantum dot
Sensitized Solar Cell
Abstract: A low cost, chemically stable with enhanced electrocatalytic activity
counter electrodes based on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) deposited on
fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate was developed by wet chemistry for
CdS QDSSCs. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was used as a binder to increase
the mechanical stability of RGO counter electrode by increasing its adhesion
on the FTO substrate. The electrodes were characterized by SEM, XRD, UVvisible, FTIR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical
impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The CdS QDSSCs assembled using TiO2
photoanode sensitized with 5 SILAR cycles of CdS QDs and RGO counter
electrode shows a high short circuit current reaches to a value of 2.843
mA\cm2 and yields a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 0.52%. An
enhancement 46.3% in the fill factor (FF) also was obtained when RGO as a
counter electrode instead of traditional Pt thin film counter electrode. The
unique electrocatalytic activity of the tailored RGO electrode was discussed in
terms of its high electrical conductivity and large surface area.

Title: Comparative Analysis of Bayesian Regularization and
Levenberg-Marquardt Training Algorithm for wind resource
assessment
Abstract: To evaluate the potential wind on a site for future wind
energy project, an accurate representation of the wind speed
distribution is required. However, due to the lack of observations,
wind engineers are conducted to use some statistical tools to
estimate the characteristics of wind by the measurements from a
nearby reference or data obtained from a short period. In this
work, we aim to apply an information processing paradigm that is
inspired by biological neurons, formal neurons, for the
assessment of wind speed distribution. Two different learning
algorithms are used so as to generate Artificial Neural Network
with one hidden layer. Results prove that learning by means of
bayesian regularization, in comparison with Levenberg–Marquardt
learning algorithm, gives the best performance. In addition, the
proposed network allows significant results in horizontal wind

Title: Robust Nonlinear Sliding Mode Control of Wind Power
Generation Systems Based on PMSG
Abstract: In this paper, a nonlinear control of a grid-connected
variable speed wind turbine (VSWT) equipped with a Permanent
Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) is presented. The output
power of a Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) is maximized
at each time instant whatever variation of wind speed. The
control algorithm employs Sliding Mode Control (SMC), and
Variable Structure Automatic Systems approach (VSAS) to
effectively do this target. The wind turbine is connected to the
grid via back-to-back PWM-VSC. Two controllers drive the
system: one for the generator side and one for the grid side,
converters. The main function of the generator side controller is
to track the maximum power through controlling the rotational
speed of the wind turbine using SMC. In the grid side converter,
active and reactive power control has been achieved by
controlling q axis and d axis current components by SMC
controller. The system is built using Matlab/ Simulink
environment. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the
proposed control scheme.

Title: The SPICE Dynamic Behavioural Electrothermal Model of
Silicon Carbide Power MOSFET
Abstract: This paper presents an electro-thermal behavioral model
(ETM) Silicon Carbide (SiC) Power MOSFET developed by SPICE.
This model is based on the MOS level 1of SPICE model wherein
the phenomena characteristic of the static and dynamic behavior
which are dependent on self-heating and junction temperature
are included and represented by ABM facilities (Analog Behavioral
Models) of Spice.
The dynamic behavior of switching device associated with charge
/ discharge phenomena of the capacitances between its terminals
is represented by 4 capacitances and two voltage controlled
voltage sources (VCVS). The Cgs, Cgd and Cds capacitances vary
according to the voltage to their terminals. And so, a good
modeling of these capacitances yields up satisfactory results for
the simulation of the switching.

Title: A new infrastructural system for the Mediterranean Areas sustainable
development
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to show the role that Messina Bridge and
TUNeIT could have for the growth of the Mediterranean Areas. The territorial
continuity between the Italian Peninsula and Sicily offered by the Messina
Bridge, and the adjustment of the railway-road system interconnected with
the system of the Adriatic harbors, Ionic and Tyrrhenian, would give to the
South of Italy the role of heart for the mobility corridor, producing a smart
crossing of the freight flows that go from Suez to the Center and North Europe.
The idea of the Messina Bridge as a "living bridge" involves the construction of
two towers adjacent to the piles of the bridge, covered with a transparent
coating opened on the top. Each tower can have a height of 380 meters with
80 floors. The towers can accommodate different functions and they are
designed with an innovative technology for energy efficiency and lower
construction costs. TUNeIT is the alternative to the solution proposed in 2005
by ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and
Sustainable Economic Development), that involves the construction of a rail
tunnel linking Tunisia with Sicily, in Italy. TUNeIT supposes the repetition of
the Messina Bridge design for multiple times, in order to create a stable
crossing for about 140 km, with 4 artificial islands. The consequences of these
projects would be the creation of new communication scenarios, new
development and cooperation programs among Italy, Europe and Africa
Regions and the experimentation of alternative energies for the sustainable
development of this infrastructural system.

Title: Load Bus Voltage Control using Fuzzy Logic
Abstract: The reactive power control problem is generally difficult because of
the large scale and non-linear characteristics in power systems. Based on the
power system status, the reactive power and voltage control is required to
make the correct decision in order to get the system back to an acceptable
operating state. For this purpose we have developed in this paper an
algorithm based on Fuzzy Logic in order to control the VAR resources,
transformer tap changer and PV pus voltage in a power system under
abnormal and/or contingency operation to maintain the voltage at all buses
within acceptable limits, when minimizing the number of control actions. The
algorithm is iterative and designed to take advantage decoupling the load flow
Jacobian matrix to decrease the computation time. The effectiveness of the
developed algorithm is identified through its application to the IEEE 14 test
system. The calculation results show excellent performance of the proposed
method, in regard to computation time and quality of results.

Title: Urban temperature analysis and impact on the building cooling energy
performances: the case of Rome, Italy
Abstract: Climate changes and urban sprawl are dramatically increasing the
heat island effect in urban environments, whatever the size and the latitude
are, affecting these latter parameters the effect intensity. The urban heats
island is a phenomenon observed since the last decades of the XIX century but
demonstrated at large scale only one century later, characterised by the
increase of air temperature in densely built urban environments respect to
the countryside surround cities. Many studies are available, showing urban
heat island intensities up to 12°C. This thermal stress causes social, health and
environmental hazards, with major consequences on weaker social classes, as
elderly and low income people, it is not by chance that survey demonstrated
the increase of deaths in such categories during intense and extended heat
waves. This study presents the firs results on the observation of air
temperature measures in different spots of Rome, city characterised by a
typical Mediterranean climate and by a complex urban texture, in which
densely built areas are kept separated by relatively green or not-built zones.
Six spots are monitored since June 2014 and include: historical city centre,
semi-central and peripheral zones and with different urban and building
designs. The paper is focused on the analysis of summer temperature profiles

and the impact on the cooling performance of buildings. Temperature datasets
and a reference building model were inputted into the well-known and
calibrated dynamic tool TRNSYS. Cooling net energy demand of the reference
building was calculated, as well as the operative temperature evolution in the
not cooled building configuration. The results of calculation allow to compare
the energy and thermal performances in the urban environment respect to the
reference conditions, usually adopted by building codes. Advice and
recommendation of suitable technologies to mitigate such conditions are
finally given.

Title: Behavior of a lightweight external wall under Mediterranean climatic
conditions
Abstract: The increasing development and use of new lightweight building
technologies makes more urgent the evaluation of their energy performance.
It is even more necessary in climatic contexts, like the Mediterranean basin, in
which the effect of the solar irradiation during the summer period should be
lessened by high thermal masses. In Sardinian region, for example, the
average irradiance value on a horizontal plane is higher than of 290 W/m2. In
that case Italian legislation requires the use of an opaque envelope with an
areal density bigger than 230 kg/m² for all orientations with the exception of
NW-N-NE or, a periodic thermal transmittance Yie<0,12 W/m2K for external
walls and Yie<0,20W/m2K for horizontal or sloped roofs. The study here
presented deals with the assessment of thermal performance of an opaque
envelope designed and built in Sardinia in 2013. The building is aimed at
maximizing the energy saving and the use of natural materials. The study is
focused on the measurement of the steady state thermal transmittance and
the dynamic parameters of prebuilt wall, made of OSB (Oriented Strand
Board) panels and cellulose. The measurement is compared with the
minimum requirements of Italian national standards. The analysis was carried
out using a climatic chamber settled in the DICAAR (Department of Civil and
Environmental Engineering and Architecture) laboratories of the University of
Cagliari. The chamber consists of two shells that create on both faces of a full
scale wall different hygro-thermal conditions. One of the shell simulates the
external conditions while the other recreates internal ones. A first set of data
was collected in steady state measuring the heat trough the specimen by
means of flux meters and RTD sensors. A second set of data was acquired to
measure the heat storage capacity of the specimen, and then the dynamic
parameters were calculated according to the EN ISO 13786:2008.
