CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL 2015
JODIE (ENNS) HIEBERT
Mortgage Broker
By Paul Straat
If you have kids, take note of Saturday April 18, 2015. That’s the date of the
5th Annual Lethbridge Children’s Festival at Exhibition Park from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m. The weather may be up and down
this spring, but no worries, this festival is
indoors with events scattered throughout the Main, North, and South Pavilions
of Exhibition Park. Ticket prices for this
event are as follows: Adults get in for $5,
youth from 12-17 get in for $3, and children from 3-11 get in for $2. Thanks to
Park Place Mall, all children under the
age of 2 get in for free! Note especially
that there is no additional charge for
parking, as well as the fact that there will
be no advance tickets being sold for this
event. All ticket sales are right at the
door.
The special guests for this year’s
edition of the festival on the Movie Mill
main entertainment stage are Bob the
Builder and Toopy and Binoo. Bob the
Builder is the main character in a series
of children’s programs broadcast in
many countries, but originating in the
United Kingdom. In each episode, Bob
and his multi-talented group of helpers
endeavor to renovate, repair and pitch in
together in all sorts of construction projects. The show emphasizes conflict resolution, co-operation, socialization and
various other learning skills for children.
Bob’s catchphrase is, “Can we fix it?”, to
which the other characters enthusiastically respond,“Yes we can!”.This phrase is
also the title of the show’s theme song,
which actually became a million-selling
number one hit in the UK. Bob the
Builder will be on stage at 11 a.m. and
will be available for a meet and greet at
11:30 a.m.
Toopy and Binoo are the subject of
another animated series for pre-schoolers based on popular childrens books
which originated right here in Canada.
Toopy, the series’ main character, is a

This Year’s Special Guests Include
Bob the Builder and Toopy and Binoo
giant mouse that wears a red shirt with
yellow stripes. Binoo is a tiny plush cat
with a long tail and a pink nose, and he is
Toopy’s best friend. Toopy often gets
himself into trouble and, you guessed it,
Binoo is there to help. The only problem
is that Binoo is actually only Toopy’s
imaginary friend, and consequently
can’t even talk out loud. Luckily for
Toopy, he can communicate by whispering. Binoo also carries around a green
doll called Patchy-Patch that often
needs to be rescued from all sorts of situations as well. Toopy and Binoo are on
stage at 1 p.m. and again at 3 p.m., and
will also be available for a meet and
greet at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
At 11:30 a.m. there will be special
stage entertainment courtesy of Rainbow the Clown, a 12:15 p.m. performance of the Mexicanos Sin Fronteras
Dance Groupe, as well as two performances at 2:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. by the
Helen O’Grady Drama Academy/Infunit
Performing Arts.

S TART D RIVING !!!
Also available for strolling meet and
greets at 11:30, 1:30, and 3:30 p.m. will
be Angelina Ballerina and Jess the Cat.
Inspired by an award-winning series of
children’s books, the Angelina Ballerina
TV series follows an 8 year old girl
(mouse) as she embarks on the next
phase of her life in a new school where
she experiences new forms of music and
dance. This series brings to life all forms
of dance including ballet, tap, jazz, classical, and ethnic. As an eight year old ballerina, Angelina’s life revolves around
dancing and performance, as well as her
family, friends, and her dreams for the
future. Angelina works very hard to
achieve her dreams and learns from her
mistakes along the way. All the children
who share in her experiences become
equally inspired to go after their own
dreams as well.

CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL 2015
tive learning show aimed at two to
four year olds. This series follows
Jess's adventures and how he and
his friends always try to solve each
other's problems with a Big Question. Problems are solved by "asking, testing, [and] find a way". Jess
and his friends search for the
answers to science and nature-led
questions, allowing small children
to discover the natural world
around them.
Other fun activities of the day
will include Wally Hoo Hoo the
Clown, Blysma pedal carts, Criss
Wiebe face painting and glitter
tattoos, astro jumps and bouncy
bubble balls. There is also a petting
zoo, or you can get some kitty
lovins at Purrfect Endings Cat Rescue.
Of course it’s not just about
having fun. Everyone also want
kids to play safe, right? No children’s festival would be complete
without that very important safety
component. Safety City and The
Lethbridge Regional Police Service

designed with special treads to
offer more traction in slippery conditions. The rubber used to manufacture the tire can remain flexible
even at extremely
low
temperatures. Winter tires
are best reserved
for
extreme
weather and not
used all season
long
because
they will wear out
more
quickly
than others. They
may not have the
same level of
traction on clear
roads. In some
cases, winter tires
may have metal
studs included to
enhance traction
in icy situations.
People who do
not want to switch tires when cold
weather arrives sometimes invest
in snow chains that improve traction on standard tires.
Mud Tires
Muddy areas can be just as slippery as snowy conditions. Mud
tires are designed similarly to snow
tires but will have extra grooves
and a tread pattern that facilitates
movement of mud away from the
tires and road. Mud tires may be
wider than standard tires as well.
Truck Tires
Drivers of trucks or sport-utility
vehicles often need special truck
tires. These tires can better handle
the weight and size of a larger vehicle. Many drivers stick with the type
of tire that originally came with
their truck. Drivers who like to go
off-roading may need an all-terrain
tire to offer more traction when
climbing hills or traversing different conditions.
It can be easy to overlook the
importance of tires, but tires help
vehicles remain on the road and
can affect mileage, maneuverability and safety.

(MS) Drivers rarely think of the
tires on their vehicles until they
have a flat. But the type of tires on
your vehicle can impact its performance. When
choosing tires
for their vehicles, drivers
should consider a host of
factors, including the terrain
and driving
conditions
vehicles are
likely
to
encounter.
Understanding tires
and
what
makes some a
better fit than
others for certain vehicles
can make for
safe driving and improved handling.
All-season tires
The most common type of tire
and arguably the best known is the
standard all-season tire. Many vehicles come equipped with these
tires, which are designed to be versatile enough to grip the road in
various conditions. They are commonly made of a harder rubber
that will not wear out quickly and
will retain their tread. Most day-today driving can be done on all-season tires.
High-performance tires
People who live in dry climates
or drive sports and racing cars can
benefit from high-performance
tires. These tires are specifically
designed to grip the road better
and offer superior handling under
higher speeds. Because high-performance tires are made of a softer
rubber compared to standard tires,
they will not last as long as all-season tires.
Snow tires
People who live in snowy, icy
conditions will benefit from the use
of snow tires. These tires are

Job Loss: First Things First
Dealing with job loss is one of the most
stressful things a person can face. When you’ve
just been laid off, making decisions is likely the
last thing you feel like doing. All the same, certain issues must be dealt with promptly—usually within 1 to 4 weeks of your layoff.
If your layoff came as a shock, it’s best to
avoid making sudden decisions on your own.
Ask someone you trust to help you through this
stage and give you objective, level-headed
feedback and support.
There are 5 basic things you need to take
care of within the first few weeks of your layoff:
• Severance (what happens when the
employer ends your employment) and settlements (what the employer offers as compensation)
• Your Record of Employment
• Employment Insurance
• References
• Financial planning
Severance and settlements
Your employer may offer you a severance or
settlement package.Try to resist any pressure to
accept the package immediately. Follow these
suggestions before you agree to or sign anything:
• Find out what the employer is offering you.
If possible, get it in writing.
• Find out what you are entitled to. Review
your employment contract, if you have one. If
you had a permanent job, chances are the terms
of your severance package must comply with
Alberta’s Employment Standards Code.
• Visit the Employment Standards website.
• If you think you may have lost your job due
to discrimination, you may wish to contact the
Alberta Human Rights Commission.
• Weigh the pros and cons of the employer’s
offer on items like
- benefits. Does the package include interim
health or life insurance benefits or the option to
pay for continued coverage?
- pensions and payouts.
- outplacement supports. Services like individual counselling can help smooth the transition to your next job.
• Be prepared to negotiate. For example, if
your package doesn’t include transition supports such as career or personal counselling, try
to negotiate a larger payout so you could purchase these services.
If you think your employer may not be offering you a fair package, contact a lawyer with
experience in labour law. The Law Society of
Alberta offers a free referral service.
When you have reached an agreement with
your employer, ask for a signed document from
your employer clearly stating the terms and
conditions of your layoff.
Record of Employment (ROE)
You need an ROE to apply for Employment
Insurance (EI). Most employers are required to
provide you with an ROE within 5 calendar days
of paying you for the final time. If you haven’t
received your ROE within 14 days of your final
pay, contact Service Canada.
If you’re planning to apply for EI, you’ll need
an ROE from every employer you worked for in
the previous year. Even if you don’t apply for EI
now, you may need your ROE later.
Employment Insurance
File your EI claim as soon as you are laid
off—even before you receive an ROE and even
if you are still being paid by the employer. The
sooner you apply for EI, the sooner your claim
can be processed.
You can file an EI claim online at Service
Canada or in person at your nearest Service
Canada office.
References
Ask your former employer, manager or
supervisor if he or she would be willing to pro-
• the insurance coverage you may need to
replace group plans
• your retirement timeline and needs
• your long-term financial goals
When you’re between jobs, living within
your means is more important than ever. The
following suggestions can help you stay on
track:
• Take stock of your assets. Include income
from other family members, emergency funds
and savings.
• Review your expenses. How far will your
income stretch to cover your costs?
• Think of ways to reduce your regular living
expenses. For example, talk to your banker
about consolidating your debts or reducing
your mortgage or car payments.
• Check out the budgeting advice and
money-saving tips available at Money Mentors.
If you don’t have a severance package, aren’t
eligible for EI and have no other resources, such
as family support, investments or savings, you
can apply for Income Support through Alberta
Works.
When you’re dealing with job loss, taking
care of first things first will help you make the
right choices for yourself and your family. Then
you’ll gradually begin to feel like you’re in convide a reference during your work search. Since trol of your life again and ready to move
some potential employers require references towards the next phase of your career.
from co-workers and clients, you may also want
to ask these contacts for their support.
Although your next employer will probably
prefer to contact your references by phone, it’s
still a good idea to ask your former employer for
a letter of reference.
