NEWS AND NOTICES
Pathway Project
ASAC Foundation
By-Law Changes/Election
There has been a plan in mind for some time to
install an accessible pathway on the south side of
the building to connect the exterior door from the
kitchenette, the shed, and the walkway on the southwest
corner of the building. The intention is to have better
access for volunteers and others walking in this area as
well as a safe exit from the kitchenette in case of
emergency.
The ASAC Foundation
Board will be voting on
changes to the existing
by-laws at the April board
meeting. If you are
interested in learning
more about the proposed
changes, ask for a copy in the office.
One of the main changes being proposed regards
the procedure for electing new members to the
board. If approved, voting will be held by mail and
you will need to be on the Center’s mailing list in
order to vote. Anyone can be on the Center’s
mailing list. If you are not already on the list, or
if you’re not sure if you are, ask at the Reception
Desk to add your name and address.
The Board’s Nominating Committee is charged
with coming up with a slate of candidates for the
June election. If you are interested in being a
candidate or learning more about the role of the
Board at the Center, contact Sally and she will
put you in touch with the Nominating
Committee.
Fire Drills
The Center holds fire drills four times a year. The
next one will be on Monday, April 6, at 10:30 a.m.
Everyone in the building at that time will be notified
just before the drill begins.
Once the alarm sounds,
everyone must exit the
building immediately. The
drill will take less than 15
minutes from start to
finish. If you have any
questions or want more
information, talk to Sally.
Anacortes Senior Activity Center
We have been very fortunate that this project has been
chosen by a Leadership Skagit team as part of their
social outreach initiative. Nicknamed “Team Green
Lantern” for placing value in sustainability, the members
are Nate Biletnikov, Pam Davis, Kim Gray, Amy Moe,
Eric Petersen, and Tina Tate.
Working alongside the
Center’s Accessibility
Committee and
Center staff, Team Green
Lantern is putting together a
multi-phased plan and is raising
the funds to execute phase one.
The team has set the goal of
completing the project by the
end of April.
Additional phases to make improvements on the south
side of the building including possible plantings, seating,
lighting, etc.; these are still in the planning stage and do
not have a timeline as of yet. You may notice some
preparation of the area including the removal of three
trees. By the time we celebrate the 20th anniversary of
the building, the walkway is expected to be complete.
Thank you to Leadership Skagit for taking on this
project!
Bridge Class Possibility
There is a possibility of a bridge class at the Center. If
you are interested in learning or just want to brush up
your skills, leave your name and phone number at the
Reception Desk. If there is enough interest to make a
class happen, you will be contacted.

In this age of ever advancing medical technology it is
difficult to stay “up to date” on the latest strategies to
keep us well and thriving. This presentation on
Wednesday, April 15, at 1 p.m. explains, in frank
terms, advanced medical interventions such as CPR,
mechanical ventilation and dialysis. Actual short and
long term outcomes for patients will be discussed.
During the presentation, the audience will see some of
the actual equipment used. This is an interactive
session, allowing time for questions and dialogue.
Presenters Cathy (BSN RN) and Maureen (RN) work
in an Intensive Care Unit where patients typically
require full or partial life sustaining measures. They
will present in layperson’s terms the realities of what
these often heroic
advanced medical
interventions mean to

All in the Same Boat:
Anacortes in the
Great Depression
One-on-One Medical Insurance Help
Too grim for an exhibit, you
say? Actually, the topic of the
newest Anacortes Museum
exhibit is surprisingly
uplifting. In Anacortes, no one had any money, but
everyone was in the same boat, so people looked out for
each other. They bartered and traded, gave what they
could, organized fundraisers, and founded workers’
co-ops. New Deal programs put men to work building
streets and parks — such as Deception Pass State Park —
and creating works of art that we still enjoy today. There
were festivals and parades, dances and football games,
movies — with sound! — clubs and gatherings. The
exhibit can be seen Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. at the Anacortes
Museum, located at 1305 8th Street.
