STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE 2R Woolooware Road North Woolooware NSW 2230 Website: www.woolooware-h.schools.nsw.edu.au TERM 1 WEEK 10B Phone: 9523 6752 Fax: 9527 3412 1 APRIL 2015 FROM THE SENIOR EXECUTIVE A big thank-you to the parents who attended P&C this term. At our last meeting Ms De Vos highlighted our focus on developing positive mental health underpinned by the MindMatters framework. This work will strengthen our welfare policy and practices at the school. The discussions at P&C will inform the activities that we provide for parents and their children in the coming months. We are preparing a parent / child workshop on cyber safety as a direct result of those discussions. More information about this will be provided next term. Our SRC have been hard at work again supporting The World's Greatest Shave and preparing for Relay for Life. Congratulations to our whole school community. We raised $3109 for cancer research. Thank you to all the students and staff who shaved or coloured their hair for the cause. The mathematics department has not yet recovered!!!! To all of our HSC students, please use the holidays to revisit and reorganise your class notes, and develop a study timetable for next term. By being organised, you will be in a better position to learn well. Remember to take time out to enjoy the holidays and be with family and friends too. It's very important to balance your time, to stay fit and healthy and to be realistic about committing to a study routine, so that you can get the best results out of year 12. Congratulations to Mrs Moon, Ms Di Maio and year 12 students who took part in the stress management session. From all accounts it was highly beneficial and students who attended learnt some helpful strategies. This term, our teachers undertook a 3 hour workshop delivered by renowned psychologist Andrew Fuller. We learnt about how teenagers learn best and how we can ensure that our 21st century students develop as confident and engaged learners and resilient young men and women. We will continue with this professional learning throughout the year. In future newsletters I will also share some of Andrew Fuller's advice to parents with you. I'd like to thank all of the hardworking staff (teachers and SASS) at Woolooware HS for another great term of teaching and learning. I'd like to wish students and their families, staff and our whole school community a very Happy Easter and a relaxing break. MS SIOKOS PRINCIPAL 1/04/2015 Woolooware High School p. NEWS YEAR 9 COMMERCE Year 9 Commerce put their shopping skills to the test at Miranda Westfield in week 8. Students were tasked with using criteria to find the best value electronic device on the market. Our tech heads, gamers and shopaholics revelled in their element. We look forward to their results being presented to class. MR ROBERTS SOCIAL SCIENCE TEACHER SELF DEFENCE YEAR 10 PASS Year 10 PASS have been learning Self Defence in our practical classes. Taught by two trained and professional instructors from the Sydney Self Defence Centre, we’ve learnt the basics plus some more advanced skills. We all now confidently know how to block a curve and straight punch, perform a groin and stomp kick and react to a dangerous situation if we ever do find ourselves in one. In the lessons we have also learnt how to respect one another and our instructors, bowing and showing our thanks after every session and our instructors have explained what self defence actually means. Self defence is not about violence and our instructors said that they don’t represent that. Instead, they believe self defence is not about hurting someone but stopping them hurting you and they encouraged us to think the same way. Summing up the activity as a whole, we have taken away skills that will help us in life and we have had heaps of fun too. Thanks to both our instructors and our PASS teachers Miss Smith & Mrs Gowan for organising this truly unique and enjoyable experience for everyone. HANNAH VAN HAM YEAR 10 1/04/2015 Woolooware High School p.2 NEWS BYOD LAPTOP ONENOTE TRAINING On Tuesday, 10 March, all of year 9 took part in a training session to facilitate more effective use of their BYOD laptops. Students were introduced to the Microsoft Office product OneNote. This program allows students to effectively organise their classwork into subjects, units of work and lessons. Students worked through the hands on session learning about creating notebooks, sections and pages; inserting text and images; and tagging. The step by step instructions have been uploaded to Moodle for future reference by students. Two different sets of instructions for Apple products and for Windows products can be found in Moodle. Choose the “School Notices” course, then “BYOD” and then “OneNote Training”. Students worked in a engaged manner throughout the session and took full advantage of the opportunity to upskill themselves. MS STEPHENS & MR PURDON (TSO) YEAR 11 ANCIENT HISTORY Year 11 Ancient History have begun the year by studying the role of the historian and archaeologist in piecing together the remains of the distant past. Part of this study has involved considering a variety of human remains – bodies of evidence. Each student took on the role of a forensic pathologist and forensic artist to investigate a specific ancient human remain. Students had to be critical thinkers to determine the cause of death for their case via research and recreation. Students presented their findings by producing a small model of the body to go with their written research. Students were able to compare their findings and interpretation with peers. Students could consider the usefulness and reliability of modern interpretation of ancient sources by identifying similarities and differences in findings. MS STEPHENS 1/04/2015 Woolooware High School p.3 NEWS YEAR 9 DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY - UNIT 1 TECHNOLOGY AND APPLIED STUDIES- HOME ECONOMICS. FOCUS AREA- JEWELLERY Year 9 students have begun their journey into design using jewellery as a medium of expression. While studying the elements and principles of design, students learn the tools and techniques of beaded jewellery manufacture. Additionally, they research the historic aspects of jewellery, it’s role in society and cultural significance. Students then follow the design process to produce a range of contemporary pieces suitable for sale in a market stall. An accompanying portfolio is produced to show design development and evaluation of their final pieces. Students have been creating practice pieces (bracelets, illusion necklaces, earrings) and prototypes using a range of semiprecious stones, glass, plastic, wooden and crystal beads. They are becoming familiar with jewellery “findings” such as shepherds hooks, lobster clasps and crimps. Students are currently working mainly with silver but may branch out depending on interest and budget! Watch this space for their final masterpieces! JANINE MAYNE TEACHER LIBRARIAN TRANSITION LEARNING COORDINATOR YEAR 12 STRESS MANAGEMENT We all encounter “stress”, but assessment and preparation for the HSC can be a daunting process for some students. In an effort to help, year 12 students were invited to attend a session on Wednesday, 11 March with psychologists from Caringbah Community Health Centre; the aim of the session being to provide direct support for students who find assessment/exam procedures particularly debilitating. Andrew and Chloe, the psychologists, explained to the students that stress is, in fact, the body’s normal, instinctive response to a perceived threatening situation. Interestingly, Andrew likened the HSC year to a mountain climb, not initially a comforting thought… However, when he then rationalised that, at this stage of their studies, they had already climbed the bigger proportion of the mountain and had only to eclipse the summit, heartening glances were exchanged around the room. This group of fourteen students, who attended the session at the end of their usual school hours, should be congratulated on the great commitment they have demonstrated towards not only their scholarship, but even more importantly, their own wellbeing!
