Untitled - Hobsons Bay

Explore art in
PUBLIC PLACES
with 150 artists
and 40 events in
OVER 80 venues
THROUGHOUT
HOBSONS BAY
during april
A message
from the
Mayor
Over 600 artists and businesses have
been enabled by Art In Public Places
since its inception, and the program
is bigger and more diverse than ever
before with 150 western region artists
exhibiting this April.
WELCOME TO ART IN PUBLIC
PLACES, WHERE ART IN
HOBSONS BAY MOVES
BEYOND THE WALLS OF A
GALLERY. EVERYBODY CAN
EXPERIENCE, EXPLORE
AND CELEBRATE THE ARTS
THROUGH EXHIBITIONS,
EVENTS, INSTALLATIONS,
POP-UPS AND PASTE-UPS
IN UNEXPECTED PLACES.
Local trader associations, businesses,
event producers, arts networks and
groups all join in with Council to present
Art in Public Places for the community,
and we thank everyone involved
for their hard work and support.
This year there will be plenty to
see during business hours, but also
a number of events and temporary
art installations after dark. Don’t miss
#lightuplogan where Logan Reserve
will be lit up with dynamic effects; and
street projections and installations in
Hall Street, Newport developed with
Williamstown High School students and
the Projector Bike team. Brooklyn is
part of the program this year with roving
performance artist Michael Meneghetti
presenting a film projected across shop
fronts in Eames Avenue during the
evening. There really is something for
everyone to experience through
this month of all things cultural.

So take a look at this year’s program,
mark your favourites on a map, and
enjoy art in some unusual places across
Hobsons Bay.

Whether it’s a sculpture, drawing,
video or performance, for Michael,
making art is bringing to life ideas
and putting flesh on thoughts.
Scartato, meaning discarded
in Italian, is a roving performance
work where Michael collects
and attaches rubbish to himself
as he walks around the city,
gradually transforming into
a human monument of litter.
The performances will be filmed
and presented across three
shop fronts at the Eames Avenue
shopping strip.

This site specific artwork reveals
an ongoing investigation into
Larissa’s daily ritual of performing
handstands. Over the past ten
years, she has performed at least
one handstand every day, often
in unexpected and inconspicuous
places – both public and private.
These are not public performances
but private moments that bring the
artist grounding, pain relief and
joy. They are in fact a key part of
managing her chronic illnesses.
This site specific installation
provides us with a playful insight
into her world.
