When Mark Samels, executive producer of WGBH’s award-winning history
series American Experience, first approached producer/director Rory Kennedy
three years ago to make a film about the end of the Vietnam War, she was
daunted. It seemed as if the war, and its tragic end, was thoroughly documented. What could she possibly add?
A lot, as it turns out. This month, as we mark the 40th anniversary of the
fall of Saigon, we’re proud to bring you our Academy Award–nominated (for
Best Documentary) film Last Days in Vietnam (American Experience’s ninth
Oscar nomination!). It tells the little-known
story of heroic Americans who engaged in
unsanctioned operations to help thousands of South Vietnamese escape Saigon
during the final days of the conflict. Like
all our American Experience films, this one
is a living, breathing history lesson with
relevance today—raising questions about
why we enter wars and what it means to
leave them.
“As I became more and more familiar
with what happened, I was struck by how
little I, and many of the people I talked to, knew about the end of the war,”
says Rory, for whom the Vietnam Era has special resonance—she is the
youngest daughter of Ethel and Robert F. Kennedy. “I’ve screened the film in
communities across the country, and the overwhelming response has been,
‘I can’t believe I didn’t know this story.’ It’s been an honor to share it.”
The documentary’s pre-broadcast theatrical release also has elicited
poignant responses from Vietnam veterans and Vietnamese Americans—with
many telling us that Last Days prompted them to talk about the harrowing
events of 1975 for the very first time. Their reactions reinforced our decision
to collaborate with StoryCorps (one of the nation’s leading oral history organizations) to capture and preserve their stories. We’ve recorded nearly 100
interviews that will be shared online and archived in the Library of Congress
to inspire future generations.
“When we first conceived of this film,” says Samels, “we knew it was a
powerful story of individual acts of courage set against a background of
chaos. But we didn’t know how deeply it would resonate today.”
Last Days in Vietnam anchors a series of programs focusing on the
Vietnam Era (page 20), from a look at the history of the draft, to the impact of
the shooting by National Guardsmen of unarmed antiwar student protesters
at Kent State.
Powerful stories. Fresh perspectives. All made possible by your generous
support!

Inside the House
of Tudor
WGBH’s Masterpiece presents one of
the television events of the year: a
breathtaking adaptation of Hilary
Mantel’s Booker Prize–winning novels
Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. The
gorgeous six-part series charts the
meteoric rise of Thomas Cromwell (Mark
Rylance) in the Tudor court, from blacksmith’s son to adviser to Henry VIII
(Homeland’s Damian Lewis). Nuanced
and gripping, this is historical drama at its finest, with period detail so
authentic that filming was done entirely by sun and candlelight.

Death Down Under
Fans of Sherlock will find another addictive detective in the iconoclastic
Dr. Lucien Blake (Craig McLachlan). In 1959, after decades away from
his native Australia—studying medicine in Scotland, serving in World
War II and living in China—Blake
returns to his rural hometown to run
his late father’s medical practice. But
life does not remain peaceful for long,
as the inquisitive and erudite Blake
finds himself drawn into the quest to
solve murders that confound local law
enforcement.

Tricky Crimes
The hugely popular British dramedy New Tricks centers on the exploits
of the Metropolitan Police Service’s fictional Unsolved Crime and Open
Case Squad (UCOS), which recruits retired cops to tackle unsolved

linked to the 1998 murder of a drug
smuggler. A tangled trail of clues leads
the UCOS team to Gibraltar, land of
sun, palm trees, mischievous monkeys
and shipping containers that prove

Twenty-five years ago, NASA launched one of the most ambitious
experiments in the history of astronomy: the Hubble Space Telescope.
At this landmark anniversary, WGBH’s Nova tells the singular tale of
the telescope that changed our understanding of the cosmos and our
place within it. Hubble has revealed
the birth of planets, helped measure
the age of the universe, furthered
knowledge of cosmic expansion,
uncovered black holes and yielded
stunning images that capture the
beauty of the heavens.

With never-before-seen documentary materials, this gripping film revisits one of the most charged chapters
in Armenian/Turkish history: the
Armenian Genocide. With in-depth
narration by Julianna Margulies, Ed
Harris, Natalie Portman, Jared Leto,
Laura Linney and Orlando Bloom,
this insightful film tells how and why
these tragic events unfolded. It also delves into the reasons behind the

The Vietnam Era
To mark the 40th anniversary of the evacuation of the US Embassy in
Saigon, WGBH presents two nights of special programs, culminating in
the Oscar-nominated American Experience/Last Days in Vietnam.
The Day the ’60s Died
In May 1970, the “peace now” optimism of the
1960s met its symbolic end at Kent State
University, when National Guardsmen shot
dead four unarmed students protesting the US
invasion of Cambodia. Hear from Americans at
the heart of that wrenching cultural moment,
including students and soldiers, 45 years later.
Mon, 4/27 at 9pm on WGBH 2
Dick Cavett’s Vietnam
Examine the Vietnam War and its
impact on America through interviews
conducted by the inimitable Dick
Cavett. Archival footage features commentator David Brinkley, correspondent Ted Koppel, antiwar activist Jerry
Rubin and other newsmakers, while contemporary discussion with
Cavett and historians provides fresh perspectives.
Mon, 4/27 at 10pm on WGBH 2
The Draft
Nothing in the Vietnam Era fueled
divisions in race, class and culture
like the draft. The threat of mandatory service drove young men to the
altar, to college, to Canada and into
the jungles of Vietnam. This cogent
film traces the history of the draft, from the origins of conscription to
the turbulent ’70s, and explores the consequences of its elimination.
Tue, 4/28 at 8pm on WGBH 2
American Experience/Last Days in Vietnam
In April 1975, North Vietnamese
forces were closing in on Saigon
as South Vietnamese resistance
crumbled and the US readied to
withdraw. In those chaotic last
days, with the clock ticking and
the city under fire, 135,000 South
Vietnamese escaped, thanks to
heroic Americans who took matters into their own hands. WGBH’s
American Experience tells this gripping story in Rory Kennedy’s Oscarnominated Last Days in Vietnam (see page 1).

Ancient Ancestors
Deep in a South African cave, in an almost inaccessible chamber
(a special team of slender experts was recruited to squeeze into it),
a treasure trove of ancient hominid fossils was unearthed after an
estimated two million years. The wondrously complete remains belong
to a crucial gap in the fossil record that spans the transition between
ape-like australopithecines (such as
Lucy) and the earliest members
of the human family. Join WGBH’s
Nova in an investigation of this
extraordinary new evidence about
what made us human.

And we achieved it
at Dana-Farber.
To many physician-researchers and scientists, finding a way to get the body’s immune
system to attack cancer cells is a momentous achievement. And Dana-Farber
researchers helped make it happen. This discovery led to the development of
several immunotherapies that are already demonstrating promising results and
better quality of life for some people with deadly cancers.

At age 10, Chico Colvard accidentally shot his sister, an event she later

was sexually abusing his daughters. Now, 30 years later, Colvard turns a

Reveal
Inside 89.7’s Morning
Edition
Fifteen minutes after Morning
Edition ends, the brainstorming
begins.
Host Bob Seay (right), the
program’s two producers and
production director Gary Mott
gather in news director Ted
Canova’s standing-room-only
office upstairs from 89.7’s studio.
Canova calls this daily meeting “the best part of my day.” It’s informal and
conversational. Someone pitches a story, then the group talks it out, refines
the idea and, if worthy, Canova scribbles it somewhere on the four-weeks-out
schedule covering his office’s dry-erase wall.
“The better pre-planning we can do, the more thoughtful, the deeper our
local coverage is,” Canova says.
Along with Seay, producer Marilyn Schairer (center) and associate
producer Lydia Emmanouilidou are responsible for bringing the plan to air.
Schairer books the guests—the politicians, professors or other experts—
and does research to help Seay prepare for interviews.
Emmanouilidou’s day begins at 3am. She checks the overnight headlines,
organizes a “rundown” of the day’s stories and begins writing the news
script by 4am. That’s when Seay and engineer Doug Shugarts arrive to get
ready for the 5am broadcast.
Arriving at WGBH in 2010, Seay was responsible for every aspect of the
program until Canova and Mott came on board a year later.

Reveal is the Peabody Award–winning

radio that finds out what’s going on

and PRX, Reveal offers essential stories, told in in great depth. The
host of Reveal is Al Letson, the recipient of multiple journalism
awards for his original series State of the Re:Union.

All Hail Henderson
Acquaint yourself with the state of the tenor
when the Sunday night jazz spotlight shines
on late great saxophonist Joe Henderson.
Host Eric Jackson presents some of Henderson’s
classic recordings, including “Recorda Me,”
“Mode for Joe” and “Power to the People.”

“There are a lot of moving parts to Morning Edition because of the time
of day,” Seay says. “Things are happening, news is breaking.”
And when it does, no one is more prepared to respond than Seay. “He’s
tremendously skilled at pivoting to address something developing in real
time,” Schairer says. “He makes it look easy.”
The whole Morning Edition team can adapt when circumstances call for
it. They slept at the office during this winter’s blizzard, Emmanouilidou on
an air mattress next to her desk. “We couldn’t chance not making it in,” Seay
says. “Listeners count on us being here.”

WCRB’s Opera in April
By Anthony Rudel 99.5
WCRB Station Manager
Spring is here, and that means it’s time to open your windows,
crank up the volume and listen to the station that plays more
music than any other.
WCRB has a special month of Sunday nights planned for
you, and there’s a lovely bonus. Let me explain.
First, I hope you’re enjoying Sunday Night at the Opera,
hosted by Cathy Fuller every Sunday at 8pm. In this weekly
visit to the magical world of opera, we feature a rich mixture
of standard repertoire as well as some operas you might
consider discoveries. Plus, we choose a mix of recordings that
blends the legendary with the contemporary so we can pay
homage to the great voices of eras past yet still bring you new
recordings by today’s vocal stars.
In April, well, you could say we’re making a deal with the devil. The
theme for the month—at least the first three Sundays—is the Faust
legend, and we’ll begin on April 5th with the best known of these works,
Gounod’s Faust. We’ll present a superb recording filled with some of the most
beautiful arias in all of French opera, performed by Richard Leech, Cheryl
Studer and José Van Dam, with Michel Plasson conducting.
We’ll follow a week later with Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust. Once
again Richard Leech plays the troubled hero in this dynamic recording conducted by Charles Dutoit. For our third visit with the devil (April 19th at
8:30pm), we’ll turn to Arrigo Boito—he was Verdi’s librettist for Otello and
Falstaff—and his rarely performed gem Mefistofele. The recording we’ve
chosen has Norman Treigle in the title role, Placido Domingo as Faust,
Monserrat Caballe as Margherita and Julius Rudel conducting.
Our opera focus has another aspect to it: some say that Don Giovanni
is in many ways a devilish character. I agree, and on April 22, WCRB will host
a staging rehearsal and discussion with some of the stars of Boston Lyric
Opera’s production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

This is an extraordinary and unique chance to see scenes of an opera
being put together and to hear some of the fabulous music in the intimate
setting of our Fraser Performance Studio. (For more information and to get
your tickets, visit wgbh.org/events.) Then, to complete the experience, on
Sunday, April 26th at 8pm, we’ll play the Colin Davis–led recording of the
Mozart masterpiece; Ingvar Wixell heads a cast that includes Martina Arroyo,
Stuart Burrows and Kiri Te Kanawa. You’ll be an expert on this amazing opera
by the time the BLO’s Don Giovanni opens later that week.
There’s also a 90-minute Sunday Night Special on April 19th at 7pm
featuring the vocal group Tenet performing Monteverdi’s Vespers for the
Feast of St. John the Baptist. This concert, recorded by WCRB at Cambridge’s
St. Paul Parish, takes you back to the splendors of Venice and the amazingly
rich harmonies of Monteverdi’s incredible choral music.
And one final heads-up: April marks the beginning of the baseball
season. To help the Red Sox start on the right note, WCRB will use Opening
Day—Monday, April 6th—to line up the hits. It’s our small way of playing
all the great music we have and inspiring the Sox to generate some offense!
Enjoy the music, and see you next month.

Roberta Is Back!
By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial
You know spring has arrived when horticulturist and entomologist Roberta Clark
returns to our airwaves.
Roberta joins me once a month on
The Point (weekdays, 9am), from April
through September, to talk gardening. We
discuss our own successes and struggles
and hear from listeners with questions and
stories about their gardens.
Believe it or not, there’s an upside to
all the snow we received this year. “The
snow benefited plants because it acted as a layer of insulation from the
extreme low temperatures we had in February,” Roberta says.
At the start of a new season, Roberta preaches patience. “April is often a
frustrating month, as the weather can be quite fickle,” she says. “I like to have
a wish list for April but often don’t get as much done as I want until May.”
Listeners have been turning to Roberta with their gardening challenges
for many years, and it is always fun to hear green thumbs from across the
Cape, Coast and Islands share their tips.

“It was especially interesting when we were talking about the hardiness
of fig trees last fall and a gardener from Chatham called to tell us that he was
very successful and had been growing figs outdoors for years,” Roberta
recalls. “That prompted a gardener from Martha’s Vineyard to also call with
his success story of overwintering figs outdoors. It is a challenge but clearly
can be done.”
Her advice for April: don’t worry if you don’t get out there as soon as
you’d like.
“There are many seeds that can be sown in early April if the ground has
thawed, but seeds sown at the end of the month, when soil temperatures
have risen a bit, will germinate faster and often catch up with those sown at
the beginning,” she says. “I enjoy April more for the green wave of buds and
leaves that begin to appear, along with the early spring crocus and the rising
chorus of birdsong!”
