A WORD FROM THE CHAIR:
WebRTC is an important movement; its beyond just agreed technologies in the browser / device. Its an
ecosystem of large and small, general and specialized service providers. All vying for a piece of the market
created when browsers / devices can communicate peer-to-peer WITHOUT a vendor specific download, and
all the limitations that incurs. WebRTC is so much more than just voice and video communications between
browsers. Put simply WebRTC implements some magic to set up a secure, robust, low-latency, p2p audio,
video, and data pipe. And within that pipe anything can be sent, from measurement data from a monitoring
device, through gesture and video data for a network-based game, to all the applications of communications
within all the processes that now run over the internet. It’s extremely big! The WebRTC Global Summit will
showcase some of these applications and give attendees a great idea on how WebRTC can build on revenue,
the technical challenges as well as the solutions. I look forward to seeing you there!

AN INTERVIEW WITH PATRICE CRUTEL
Patrice Crutel has been Bouygues Telecom’s Senior Architect of the Core and Service Network layer since 2011. He is in charge of
E2E strategies in areas such as IMS and Service Network Evolution, mainly in subjects such as VoLTE, Unified Communication (RCS,
webRTC, SDP, IP messaging), new service, opening to Third Party Developers. Patrice spoke at the 2014 WebRTC Global Summit and
we are delighted that he will be able to share his thoughts on Next Generation Unified Communications at WebRTC Global Summit
2015. With that in mind we asked Patrice a few questions on WebRTC and some of the surrounding topics.
Q
How would you describe WebRTC to a
person who has never heard of it?
webRTC is an “opensource”, a tool allowing 3rd
Party Developers and operators to develop,
easily and without any need of plugins, voice/
video, messaging, content sharing apps on any
browser.
Has WebRTC been the disruption that
was predicted when it was first
developed and why/why not?
Q
Adding without any need of any plug-in the
capabilities to have Real Time Communication
(voice, messaging, content sharing) in any device
that has at least a browser (i.e. a TV, an STB, a
PC and so on) is for sure a relevant evolution.
Exposing those capabilities to developers is
allowing relevant innovation in the area of Real
Time Communication (eHealth, eCommerce,
Surveillance…). It also add capabilities of adding
Real Time Communication anywhere (using WiFi,
4G…) in any device (tablet, TV…) without any
need of SIM card. It also allows to be contacted
on any portal, any Social Network without any
need to provide his number i.e. keeping full
privacy by just a simple click.
Q
What are you and your company doing
to drive WebRTC forward?
We are following constantly the relevant and
needed (for an operator) evolutions of webRTC
(inclusion of ORTC in IE, inclusion of relevant
codecs, Push Notifications…). We are constantly
studying the relevant Use Cases which are
facilitated by webRTC (“Click-2-Communicate”
is not the only usecase allowed by webRTC)
and which can add relevant value to our VoLTE/
ViLTE strategy. We are constantly discussing
and exchanging ideas with relevant partners in
webRTC environment.
Q
If there is one, what is WebRTC’s
killer app?
webRTC is neither a service nor an End-2-End
solution. webRTC is a tool that will allow innovative
app. We see today quite often the presentation of
apps such as Click2Call/Click2SMS, conferencing…
but those services do exist since longtime. webRTC
has surely facilitated a better QoE for users (for
example, I could imagine the capaibility of being
able to be contacted Annywhere, Anytime, on Any
Device, from Anyone, being Anonymous via some
small icon, flashcode on any portal, my Social
Network, my signature…).
Q
What would your advice be to a
developer wanting to integrate WebRTC
into their products and services?
webRTC provides really API allowing voice/video,
messaging, content sharing. It will facilitate the
Communication with and between the user(s).
It brings opportunities in areas such a eHealth,
eSurveillance, eCommerce. It improves the
QoE for the users (simplifying and improving the
Communication)
Q
What is the biggest hurdle for the
progression of WebRTC?
What is for sure is that webRTC is progressing
so quick with regard to the features (codecs,
consumption of battery…) that it integrates. From
an operator point of view, the hurdle will remain
the statbility of webRTC in browsers next year and
also the Legal Interception requirements that an
operator gets from the authorities. webRTC is a
web model and authorities need to adapt their
view towards this change of model.
Q
What are the most impressive
companies in the WebRTC space?
There are so many relevant companies in the
webRTC space, not only the big “dinosaurs” of
the current Telco space. What is relevant when
selecting a company in such area is the agility of
the Solution provided as webRTC is evoluting so
quick. We have experimented the work with small
partners bringing relevant innovative ideas in the
webRTC space.
Q
What is the number thing you are looking
forward to from next year’s Global Summit?
What I do expect is really to see relevant webRTC
apps (not only Voice/video session between
smartphone and tablet, Click2Call, Conferencing
solutions). I do expect to see relevant usage of
webRTC APIs. From a “standardization” point
of view, I really hope to see good evolution of
webRTC in area such the wake up of webapps.

GLOBAL MOBILE MARKET
OUTLOOK: 2014–19
Global mobile subscriptions are forecast to rise by 1.8 billion
between end-2013 and end-2019, from 6.7 billion to 8.5 billion,
equating to a CAGR of 4.2% over the period and 28% in absolute
terms. Asia-Pacific will be the biggest contributor to growth in
subscription numbers, and will account for 53% of total global
subscriptions at end-2019, and 55% of global net additions during
the forecast period. Africa will see the most rapid increase in
subscription count, with a CAGR over the forecast period of 7.4%.

As competition from OTT voice, messaging, video, and
other content services increases, operators need to design
and deliver their services in a more flexible and dynamic
way. To achieve this, operators are moving key capabilities,
features, and access control off of devices and the network
in order to be more centralized, accessible, and Webbased. This is evident in the abundance of cloud, OTT,
and other service initiatives operators around the globe
have launched, a trend that will gain momentum over the
forecast period.
But operators should be wary of the promise of big
incremental revenue opportunities in RCS or VoLTE.
Instead, they should continue to sell LTE on its very real
benefits in terms of data services and to use RCS and
VoLTE to future-proof their networks and improve the
overall customer experience with service innovations,
rather than thinking of them as new revenue opportunities.
The real benefit of offering voice on the LTE network is that
it allows for more efficient operation and thus reduced opex.
We expect to see many more operators launch VoLTE
services in 2014 and beyond as VoLTE-capable devices
become more affordable and widely available to operators.
