Welcome What do you do when the economic situation changes drastically almost overnight? Well, that’s what happened to us and the rest of the world in 2008 and that economic downturn has continued in varying degrees through 2012 especially in the residential real estate market. Bill Boddie So, “What do you do?” As has been suggested by so many business and strategic leaders, “you simplify what you’re doing and focus on what you know best”. We have concentrated on simplifying and focusing at BNE over the past few years and we will continue with this plan for a while. The economic downturn beginning in 2008 was unprecedented. The recession coupled with the significant financial requirements of the Hardee’s remodel program brought us to the realization we needed to simplify our company and focus on what we know best. For that reason we have recently divested of our TEXAS Steakhouse, Moe’s and Cafe Carolina brands. These brands have been an important part of our BNE family and we’re very proud of their accomplishments as well as the wonderful people that have made them successful. However, for the foreseeable future, we will focus on our Hardee’s restaurants, which have been performing very well, along with our BNE Land real estate holdings. Over the next couple of years we will complete our remodel program, set a plan for future growth in the Hardee’s brand and adjust our real estate holdings to what fits best for us going forward. Shirley Jones, 2011 Top Biscuit Maker takes the award for the second time! As with our other BNE biscuit makers, Shirley Jones has already been up for four to five hours by the time most of us start thinking about what we might have for breakfast. And by lunchtime, she’s ending her shift as the biscuit maker at the Hardee’s on Duke Street in Durham, where she has worked for 15 years. Benjamin Franklin said “Early to bed, early to rise...” Since Shirley gets up so early, we asked her if she also goes to bed really early. She said “In the wintertime when it gets dark early and there’s not much to do I get to bed pretty early, but in the summer time when I’m gardening and putting up food, there’s always something to do.” One thing is evident – whatever Shirley does, she does it to the best of her ability. “I always tell people when they ask me about this award “I was raised to do the best at everything you do, and to do it with pride.” Regional Finalists in Biscuit Maker Challenge 2011 In addition to the top award, each Region also selects a top winner. There are 335 Hardee’s restaurants across North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia. All the finalists will be featured on the in-store tray liners. The regional finalists, along with the top winner were honored during a banquet at Rose Hill Plantation. Meet the Winning Biscuit Makers: JANET Thomas Aberdeen, NC From L: Leziel Sanders, Janet Thomas, Shirley Jones and Elaine Hall “I grew up on a farm in Durham County, and I’m used to getting up early. I guess it’s just in my nature,” Shirley says. She rises at 2:30 am, in the dark of night and begins preparing for the drive into the Durham restaurant. She rides in each day with her cousin, who is the breakfast shift manager. Shirley Jones is no stranger to success. She took top honors in the Biscuit Makers Challenge this year, after recently winning in 2009. In return for their donation, guests received a patriotic star shaped cut out to personalize and display in the restaurant, and coupons valued at more than $10 to use toward future restaurant purchases. Y GRAND OPENING at Washington #2 Hardee’s “The community has been asking for another Hardee’s in Washington for a long time. This one is on the other side of town from the original one,” Frances Miller, the Senior General Manger of the recently opened Hardee’s of Washington #2 says. And she should know, because she has had a long career with Hardee’s in Washington. “I know the first one has been here at least 19 years, cause I started working there while I was still in high school!” (The first Hardee’s in Washington opened in 1992.) The new restaurant is located at 2427 West Fifth Street just off 264 West, along the route that leads to Greenville. This location is convenient for commuter and visitor traffic from people heading into Greenville for work, school, or healthcare visits. “We also get a lot of people stopping by here on their way to or from the River or the Lake, so that’s one reason we made the parking lot bigger than at other Hardee’s. A lot of people are pulling a boat, so we had to make room for them to park here.” and canopies. Some of those that started lining up Sunday evening ening for the 6:00 am Monday morning opening. An established set of criteria for operational excellence including sales, food costs; payrolls and other expenses, as well as overall restaurant performance is monitored throughout the year. The annual award is named for the late W. Carleton Noell, one of the founders of BNE. The newly named “Founders Award” will honor all three of our co-founders: W. Carleton Noell, Nicholas Bunn Boddie & Benjamin Mayo Boddie. The Carleton Noell Award recognized and honored our top Hardee’s general managers and district managers throughout the years and the Founders Award will continue this tradition. We will award top restaurant management for accomplishing desired goals and objectives using their available resources efficiently and effectively. A mock-up of the Founders Award Recognition wall This means in 2012, as in any other year, all general managers and I was not here when BNE opened its first Hardee’s restaurant in 1962; however, knowing these three gentlemen I feel certain they would tell you their number one resource was their people. It’s also a Conference Center. During weekdays you’d be likely to hear corporate executives talking about organizational plans, or marketing strategies - all the dos and don’ts of upcoming business plans. But come the weekend during the traditional wedding season, what you’ll hear is “I do!” as brides and grooms exchange their vows. Rose Hill has become a highly sought after wedding location for the Raleigh, Wilson and Rocky Mount area. t makes perfect sense really. The beautifully appointed Manor House offers more than 10,000 square feet of space with a variety of rooms and parlors for use during a wedding. For those who prefer to be outdoors there are many options as well including the gazebo by the pond, or the enchanting pecan grove. A stately processional can be had by stepping out of the door of the Manor House, along the columned porch, down the front steps and along a path that ends at a bubbling fountain within the circular drive. We think the brides-to-be will love Rose Hill as we do! 8 | ENTERPRISER Fall 2012 Donna Parks, Publisher, Southern Bride & Groom New Kent Winery Weddings “Love is in the air, that’s all I know to say,” Mike Bobbit, Operations Manager declares when asked about the number of weddings held at New Kent Winery. “We started offering weddings here in the Fall of 2011 and had 11 that year. In 2012 we will have hosted a total of 31 weddings and/or wedding receptions by the end of the year, and we already have 18 booked for next year and it’s not even the busy wedding booking season yet.” Just like at Rose Hill, one of the appeals is that New Kent Winery has several different potential venues. Couples have choices and can pick what suits their plans and their visions. “We’ve had people get married on the outdoor patio, and then come into the tasting room for the reception. We’ve had people get married inside and then go out into the pavilion tent for the reception. In some cases the wedding has been held at a different site, and just the reception held here,” Mike Bobbit goes on to explain. New Kent Winery can accommodate small or large parties, and they have an approved list of caterers from the Richmond and surrounding area for supplying food needs. Y New Construction Gains Momentum at Viniterra There are ten new custom homes at Viniterra that are occupied or will be occupied soon. All of these new homes were started within the past twelve months. “The community is gaining momentum, and the Richmond area in general has seen a steady increase in sales volume this year over 2011,” Jimmy Forrest, Director of Sales at Viniterra reports. Construction of a 12,000 square foot clubhouse is also scheduled to begin in 2013. Viniterra is the private, gated Estate subdivision in the Master-Planned community called New Kent Vineyards, which BNE Land has been developing since 2008. The current amenities include a working winery and 25 acres of vineyards on site, the Rees Jones designed Signature golf course and full practice facility, and miles of walking and biking trails. The sales team at Viniterra attributes their recent successes to Boddie-Noell’s commitment to excellence and building first class amenities, like the New Kent Winery and Rees Jones designed golf course. New Kent Vineyards and Viniterra are located about 20 minutes East of Richmond, and just about 25 minutes from Williamsburg. We come to work, and we continue to try to do our best, but inside we are struggling. We need somebody to talk to. We need kindness and to feel that we are not alone. This is what Corporate Chaplains offer to our employees. They are the guiding voice “on the other end of the line.” oddie-Noell Enterprises began working with Corporate Chaplains of America five years ago, and at that point there were 18 locations in which the chaplains made on-site visits. Seeing the benefits of the program BNE committed to expanding the reach. Currently that includes five chaplains making on-site Matt Baldwin visits to about 50 of our locations. Matt Baldwin, a senior manager at Corporate Chaplains of America has Senior Manager, Corporate Chaplains been involved with the Boddie-Noell account since its inception. It was one of several accounts he worked on and managed. But Matt has let his other accounts go, and is now focusing his efforts on expanding the reach within BNE even further. There are posters in every restaurant with contact information. “My goal is to establish a relationship, a friendship, with every general manager at the locations that are not physically served. Once a month I have a conversation with those GMs, and they know they can call me on my toll free pager 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” – Matt Baldwin “Some of the reasons people need some extra support along the way might stem from depression, relationship issues, divorce, health issues, or they may be facing foreclosure or homelessness. I’ll talk to people about anything they need to talk about,” Matt declares. In addition to being able to talk directly to one of the chaplains that serve BNE employees, the chaplains also provide guidance to employees about where to find other support and services within their community. “Sometimes we encourage individuals to seek support through grief share groups, divorce care groups, the Department of Social Services, or the United Way in their area. We also remind BNE employees of the Helping Hands program within their own organization,” Matt explains. Boddie-Noell Enterprises has more than 10,000 employees spread over five states, and every single one of our employees can reach out to Corporate Chaplains for support if the need arises. When BoddieNoell proclaims “We Believe in People,” it’s not just a slogan. Y What’s on the Menu at Hardee’s these days? Success with a side order of Pride! BNE Hardee’s are enjoying ongoing success in recent years and we asked some leaders to share their thoughts about what the key ingredients of this winning combination are. It won’t surprise you that “our people” was consistently mentioned as the leading ingredient. But there’s more to the story. TERRY Lewis Divisional VP, Hardee’s Operations “The biggest thing I would attribute our success to is that about a decade ago we made a concerted effort to put the right people in place at the Regional VP, Director, and District Manager levels. With the right people in place we developed a set of measures called the ”Performance Standards” and began to hold people accountable for them. Once people knew what was expected of them, they came forward and met the standards. Our managers, including our General Managers and Shift Managers are proud of their restaurants, proud of their people, and they value every single employee.” Terry goes on to highlight other ingredients for success. “Secondly,” Terry says, “we’ve found our niche in the fast food market. We purchase top grade products, and serve top grade food including our hand-breaded fresh chicken tenders and our Angus beef burgers.” Hardee’s has long been a top choice for breakfast for those seeking a quick delivery as well as those who might want to come in and share a leisurely cup of coffee and a biscuit with friends. Since 2002 Hardee’s has been committed to cooking a customer’s order exactly how and when they order it. It took our customers a little while to get used to that.” Terry says that now Hardee’s customers know that it’s going to take just a bit longer, and that we will bring their custom cooked sandwich or chicken tenders to their table. Now our lunch and dinner customers are not only willing to wait a few minutes longer, but that they are choosing to wait for a superior product. “There’s one more thing I should mention,” Terry continues. “We practice what we refer to as $6 dollar service. We open doors for people. We walk them to their car with an umbrella if it’s raining. We stop by their table and ask them how their meal was and if we can get them a refill on their soda. It’s really just plain ole good southern hospitality, and it works.” BRENDA Cherry Regional VP, Region 1 “We have great people, a great product, and great marketing. It’s a combination of things, but it starts with people.” Brenda points out that almost all the employees in leadership positions in Region 1 have been promoted from within. “I believe in offering opportunity to our people through promotion from within. We know our people’s strengths, and their values. You cannot teach people to want to serve. They either have that desire or not. We have to have people who genuinely care about the guests.” Brenda Cherry also points to the value of the Performance Standards, and the monthly report that each restaurant receives. “It is a positive way to keep our goals before us and monitor our results. We in operations refer to this as our ‘report card.’ We set our goals for the year, and every month we get a ‘picture’ of how we’re doing. It’s a positive tool. It’s about positive reinforcement.” GENE Dickens Regional VP, Region 2 “We start every meeting by talking about what we’re most proud of,” Gene proclaims. He also points to the value of the Performance Standards, but is quick to emphasize that the ‘report card’ is not about competing with others, but about achieving for BoddieNoell as an overall organization. We look out for each other. Discussions at our meetings are not limited to work-related issues. We ask about each others’ families. We listen to each other.” MIKE Zollo Regional VP, Region 3 Mike emphasizes how important the Managers at the restaurant level are. “We need leadership, but we also need participation! Because we believe so deeply in guest services, we know we need managers at the restaurant level that can be, and are willing to be, participative. This is a very participative business, and we now make that very clear to management candidates. We drill down to the specifics that these jobs will entail, and make that clear to candidates up front – and I think this has a lot to do with the success we have. We have the right people in the right jobs.” CHUCK Burke “We have become very intentional about the kind of leadership personnel that will be successful in the Hardee’s restaurants,” Mike explains. He goes on to stress that the culture of BNE Hardee’s allows for a lot of feedback from employees at all levels. “We need to know how they are doing, and we want them to tell us how we are doing and what else they might need from us.” Regional VP, Region 4 Chuck also reinforces the role that people play in the success of our Hardee’s restaurants. His perspective emphasizes the people on both sides of the counter. “Our region is culturally very different from the other regions. I think in some ways life is little slower paced in many of the small towns where we have restaurants in this region. Breakfast is a time when many of the locals come in every single day at the exact same time, and we know every customer’s name and we know about their families.” In a business that can be very fast-paced and chaotic this value placed on people, both employees and customers is refreshing, and Chuck reminds us that this goes back to the way the Boddie family built the business. “I’ve been with Boddie-Noell for 37 years, and it was not unusual to see Nick and Mayo Boddie coming into the restaurants talking with employees and customers. And that value has been passed down to the second generation and the third generation. It’s also what we as Regional VPs and Directors, and District Managers do. We know our employees at every single restaurant. A time to give Thanksgiving for our great nation and to celebrate a Savior! But as the holiday season approaches, we should all pause to THINK ABOUT PERSONAL SAFETY AND THEFT PREVENTION. Unfortunately, the holiday time of year also has the highest crime rates. Don’t let crime spoil your holiday. Below are some powerful, yet simple strategies to make your holidays the joyful times they should be. Personal Safety > When shopping, shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member > If you must use an ATM, choose one that is located inside a mall, or well-lighted location > Avoid carrying your checkbook, cash, and credit cards all together in one wallet and don’t flash large sums of money in public > Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your car Theft Prevention > Don’t leave valuables in plain sight. Store away GPS, MP3 players, or cell phones > Park in a well lighted areas and avoid parking next to vans or trucks where people can hide > Lock packages in your trunk or out of plain sight > When approaching your car, be alert of your surroundings and have you keys ready in hand > When traveling, ask a neighbor to watch your home and don’t forget to have mail and newspapers stopped > At home, keep doors locked and be cautious of solicitors. What’s Important to you? | by Larry Williamson, Senior Director of Human Resources People know what is important to us by what we talk about. We talk most about what we tend to focus on. When I ask a GM what’s important to their DM, what is one of the first things they do (look at) Larry Williamson when they visit their restaurant, they can tell me. If I ask a manager the same question about their GM, they too can tell me. And so it is with most leaders. We show others what is important to us by our actions. When I ask crew, managers, etc., the above question, how often would you imagine I hear the response “employee and customer safety?” Fortunately we are hearing this with greater frequency. As leaders we all have many things we need to focus on to insure the success of our business, and each of these things are important. Focusing on the important things is why we are successful. Our challenge - what behavioral changes can we make to insure all those we work with and serve know beyond any doubt, that SAFETY OF OUR EMPLOYEES AND GUESTS IS AS IMPORTANT AS ANYTHING WE ARE CHARGED WITH.
