President’s Message
As you are reading this message, we
are already in the month of March!
The year is quickly moving, and we
are more than half way through the
ski season. There are only a few
mountain trips left, and I hope that
you have joined us on at least one
event.
I would like to remind everyone to
always keep safety in mind when
you are involved in this sport.
Although we are having a great time,
injuries still occur and you must be
prepared just in case.
Here are some tidbits to keep in mind:







Keep your body hydrated. Water is the best “lubricant”.
Remember to stretch before and after your physical event. Continue
to exercise in some form in between your mountain days.
Dress appropriately for the weather.
Keep your body fueled with the proper nutrients.
When riding in groups, it’s best not to be too close together. I’ve had
many collisions because someone did not see me and clipped my skis!
Let the speed demons go first. Watch the slower people in front of
you. If your group stops, each person should stop below the one who
is higher up in case someone slips and falls. Don’t stop in the middle
of the mountain because someone may run into you. The side of the
mountain is an ideal place to rest.
If you feel dizzy, take a break. The altitude may be affecting you.
Continue to stay hydrated.
Remember to have identification on you, including your insurance
card. Injuries are not common but they do occur.
Finally, if you have an injury, please follow the Dr.’s orders! Injuries may
become worse if ignored. Let’s be safe and have fun!
Jane

Coaches Corner
By Coach Kenneth Williams
“If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”, Dr. Martin Luther King.
I’m referring to our skiing at Mt, Bachelor, Oregon, the long weekend of the 2015
NBS Western Region’s Urban Winterfest, our annual celebration of the distinguished life and historic legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. More than a dozen 4SW
members made the long trek to Bend, OR, a small town of nearly 81,000 visibly
happy residents. I won’t recount the goings-on off the slopes here – that’s likely
covered elsewhere in this edition. Instead, here’s a brief recap of the skiing, at
least for me (and the ‘Boardin’ for my roommate, Gary Everett).
A two and a half hour flight to Portland, OR, was followed by a short-hop, half-hour
flight to Bend. Friday’s weather and snow conditions were challenging for most, amenable for a few.
The next, day we drove the 21 miles to Mt. Bachelor while enjoying the scenic winter-scape surrounding us the latter two-thirds of the way.
That morning, thick fog, temps in the low 20’s and deep snow that had been thrown about by many
skiers in the days ahead of our arrival, combined to make for less than thrilling skiing. Nevertheless, my expert skills and wide (mid-fat) Blizzard Cochise
skis well equipped me for the trying conditions. Quiet but ready to rebalance arms, narrower stance for two-ski-platform stability, uninterrupted
forward stance; check, check, and check! Gary fared fairly well with his Advanced snowboarding skills, even learning to maneuver the bumps that pimpled every run, whether of the Blue Square or Black Diamond variety. Quiet
arms, forward stance, assertive edging; check, check and check!
After a yummy chili-dog lunch, I joined Gary in enjoying a Sunny and much
warmer (temps in the high 30’s) afternoon of semi-blissful skiing off of the Pine Marten Express, Outback Express and Sunshine Accelerator chairlifts. Northwest Express and Summit Express chairs
never opened, but we were highly satisfied with what we skied/’boarded.
Saturday was a wash-out, literally, for many, including Gary and I. It rained the entire day, rendering the conditions miserable and messy, at least in mine and Gary’s estimation. We skipped skiing
and returned to our Hotel room for some needed rest and relaxation.
Sunday’s drive promised better conditions with welcome Sunshine all the way to the
mountain. But upon arrival, the heavy overcast straddling its peak and outer
reaches prevailed, making visibility poor due to the flat light. A brisk wind threatened to lessen the otherwise acceptable conditions. And the snow was bullet-proof
despite having been groomed the night before; it had also frozen into near-cement
overnight. Skiing with Snow-Pro’s Forrest King-Shaw, Ernest Brown (both, Instructors at Squaw Valley), and Dino White (our veteran Instructor at Mammoth) on this
morning (Gary had opted to ‘Board with a new acquaintance), I enjoyed skiing with
excellent skiers who, like myself, negotiated the wide variety of terrain (the hallmark of Mt. Bachelor skiing, I think!) with smooth, graceful arcs of linked turns with
visible aplomb. We had a ball!
As the honored Dr. King said per his quote above, I was not able to do great things (ski the whole
mountain or more of its flanks all three days), I did do small things in a great way (ski trying conditions well, and skiing with Pro excellence).
(See the season race schedule elsewhere in this newsletter.)
