Dominican Bus and Coach Services - Guide
1. Introduction:
Thank you for requesting our Dominican Bus and Coach Services timetables and information
guide. If you find it helpful, please consider 'clicking' the little link in the footer of any page (whilst
you are connected to the Internet – of course!) to make a small donation, which will assist in the
upkeep, maintenance and development of Visiting the Dominican Republican website as a useful
resource for future visitors. Thanks so much – if you do choose to so this. We really do appreciate
it.
Here we have put together some of the resources that you might eventually find if you trail around
the Internet for a few hours ;)
Hopefully it will save you some time and give you an idea of how frequently public transport runs
between major towns via a main bus/coach service provider.
In the Dominican Republic – Caribe Tours and Metrobus are probably the largest, and longest
established coach service and lease companies. They mainly run services from Santo Domingo to,
from and out of the major inland cities and across to and along the popular North coast resorts.
TerraBus is also a well known name and is the main service provider to the South-East Dominican
resorts of Punta Cana and Bavaro.
There are also some smaller companies that run 'proper' bus/coach services using larger, airconditioned fleets.
The DR is also well known for its many minor local services – or guaguas – which tend to be rather
less modern and can provide an 'up close and personal' experience with the locals in terms of
often being well-filled with passengers.
As you will read at Visiting-the-Dominican-Republic.com website – in the Dominican transport
options pages – besides large numbers of official 'beige' taxis, there are numerous unofficial rides
(typically aging japanese saloons) known as 'publicos' and – not for the faint hearted – even
motoconchos, the notorious moped 'taxi' services!
For those who want to travel further than a few block, though, the major Dominican bus and coach
services are of a high standard and well worth using as an economical way to get about – where
official taxi prices can be punitive for all but the economically blessed. Remember that the buses
and coaches are extremely busy at peak work-travel times as many Dominican make the daily
commute from inland town top the thriving hubs of Santo Domingo and Santiago, to work. Here are
some details about the major companies and timetable information:

2. Caribe Tours
Caribe Tours is one of the largest and longest established coach and bus service operators in the
DR serving the towns listed below. Essentially Caribe Tours serves between Santo Domingo (the
Capital) and the North Coast as far as Samana peninsula with various key towns in the interior of
the Island also either en route or served directly.
Of interest to some adventurous travellers is the fact that Caribe Tours provides a daily service to
the Haitian capital, Port au Prince. It should be noted that Haiti is not necessarily a simple 'extra'
vacation visit that any tourist might wish to make.
Sadly, Haiti is marred by regular political an internal unrest. This means that unless vital for a
specific reason a visit should always be carefully considered in light of any current international
tourism advice as provide by your country of residences authorities. Currently there are also
concerns due to the threat of swine flu that have also affected some travel warnings.
For example:

For the record - Caribe Tours own website is a rather disappointing frames based site that makes it
difficult to reference pages here – and it also seem to be periodically unobtainable. However, on a
good day, you should be able to get to look at the site here:

3. Autobuses Metro – MetroBus Timetable 2009
Metrobus also provides a regular service that covers the North coast towns and the major inland
destinations of Santiago de los Caballeros (the DR's second city) and San Francisco de Macoris –
a major agricultural town center. You can access current times of services run by Metrobus here :
Metrobus Timetable
(The link will only work when you are connected to the Internet – of course)
You may then recognize the page you want listed on the left: “Rutas y Horarios”
Note: You will see that this is link runs through Google Translate tool to enable you to view the
site in (fairly good) English – BUT you'll notice that the timetable uses various abbreviations for the
towns that services run to – and from. By and large the accepted travel destination abbreviations
(similar to the airlines and airports is used – some are more deducible than others). So the
following may be helpful:
CHURCHILL – Refers to the MetroBus Terminal/Station in Santo Domingo at:
Avenida Winston Churchill which is behind the Plaza Central (Central Square) in the capital city.
SDQ – Santo Domingo
STGO – Santiago
POP – Puerto Plata
SOS – Sosua
SFM – San Francisco de Macoris
NAG – Nagua
SAN – Sanchez (Disembark here, for example, to get a local transport (guagua) to LasTerrenas)
SAMA – Samana
Below we have included a quick reference 'snapshot' of the 'Routes and Departure Times' directly
from the Metrobus site – to save you time – or for when you do do not have a connection or if you
chooseto print-off this ebooklet:
PLEASE NOTE AGAIN:
We cannot guarantee that the listed times of departure will not change. YOU are always advised to
ring ahead or ask your hotel/hostel reception to double check times for you ahead of embarking on
travel based on the times supplied. We are only able to provide what the Dominican Bus and
Coach companies publish and there may be times when timetables are updated.

The other major service TerraBus does not currently appear to have a website but various contact
numbers are listed in the mini-directory of transport company contacts.
Further useful telephone numbers for a variety of offices and branches of the major bus/coach
companies in the DR are listed below so that you can try to check current times of any specific
services if you wish to do so:

5. Travel by DR Transport to Haiti
The two key transit points between the Dominican Republic and Haiti are at:
i) Jimani, in the south,
on the road that connecting Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
ii) Dajabon, in the north,
The road running from Cap Haitien to the Puerto Plata.
You cannot simply hire a car and travel over the border – not that it would be wise to do so anyway.
Private motor vehicles must obtain special government permission from the country of origin. It is
not legally possible to cross the border between countries with rental vehicles.
The border crossing points between the Dominican Republic and Haiti remain closed between
18:00 hrs and 08:00 hrs Dominican time. So, if you were to arrive after 18:00 hrs it will mean you
may likely not be able to cross until the following morning.
There are two commercial Dominican transportation operations that run between Port-au-Prince,
Haiti, and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic:
1) Caribe Tours – as outlined above
2) TerraBus also has daily departures from both cities in air-conditioned 50-passenger coaches,
with video/music. Approximate cost is US $60 one-way. In Haiti, Port au Prince, TerraBus buses
leave at 10:00 hrs from Place Geffrard (just off Champ de Mars) and arrive at the terminal in Santo
Domingo, Dominican Republic, in the late afternoon (Journey approx 5-6 hours).
There are also apparently some 30-passenger buses, managed by a syndicate of small
Dominican operators, that depart from Rue du Centre (between Rue Pavée and Rue des Miracle )
in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, at around 11.00 hrs each morning, from Monday to Friday.
These services are considerably cheaper at around US $25-30 for one way, BUT these services
are also slower than the TerraBus coaches because they carry merchandise between the two
countries that must be inspected by Customs at the border. This trip can take 7 to 8 hours
depending on the time taken by Customs to make their inspection.
These buses return to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the following day (between Monday and Friday).
