KAMUT® Wheat Growers’ Dinner
The annual KAMUT® Growers’ Dinner was held on January 24 at the Delta
Regina to recognize and celebrate last year’s KAMUT® wheat growers. The
meeting and dinner drew more than ninety growers for updates on 2013 crop
production, Kamut International (KI) promotional activities, networking, and
camaraderie. KI CEO Trevor Blyth and Prairie Heritage Seeds (PHS) owner
Alex Galarneau provided a review of 2013 growing conditions and overall
production during the afternoon meeting. A short social hour provided the
opportunity to network. Dinner included a delicious and generous organic
buffet that included KAMUT® wheat rolls, pasta salad, and lasagna in addition
to roasted baron of beef and extensive dessert table. Marion McBride,
KAMUT® wheat grower and event coordinator for Organic Connections,
provided a dinner presentation and discussed current Canadian organizing and
promotional efforts underway supporting organic agriculture. She also announced the biennial “Organic Connections” would be held November 7 – 8,
2014 in Regina. The evening’s main event recognized growers for their commitment to the KAMUT® wheat program with awards for number of years
growing KAMUT® wheat, for highest quality in specific categories and the
best overall crop. Roger Chesney of Rockglen, SK was recognized for the
highest yield (38.9 bushels per acre); Victor Martens of Outlook, SK had the highest protein
(16.7%); Scott Amundson of Robsart, SK had the
highest test weight (64.0 lbs. per bushel); and Bill
Brown of Big Sandy, MT had the lowest dockage
and broken kernels combination (0.4%). Finally,
the annual KAMUT® Cup for the best overall
crop was awarded to Johannas Brown of Turner,
MT. Attendees received packages of Artesian
Acres spaghetti and rotini. Thank you to all of our KAMUT® wheat growers!

KAMUT® Brand Khorasan Wheat and Dietary Supplements:
Green KAMUT® Wheatgrass Juice
KAMUT® wheatgrass juice, also known as “Green KAMUT®,”
is the harvested early growth of the KAMUT® wheat plant
valued for its proposed health promotion, and preventative
and curative properties (1). It is defined as a botanical supplement or a phytomedicine according to the National Institutes
of Health Office of Dietary Supplements, which defines
a botanical as “a plant or plant part valued for
its medicinal or therapeutic properties, flavor, and/or
scent” (2). Methods and timing vary to extract wheatgrass
juice, but in general, when the young plant begins “jointing”
and producing a stem, at about eight inches high, the grower harvests the leaves and stems
and presses or chops them to produce a bright green juice. While many proponents believe it is best to consume the juice fresh, it is commonly freeze-dried to produce a brilliant green powder that retains many of the benefits of the raw juice. Raw juice poses a
risk of microbial contamination and requires immediate consumption; freeze-drying eliminates this risk and results in a shelf-stable product.
Many users reconstitute the powder, commonly a teaspoon, in 1 to 4 ounces of filtered
water for a green “shot” often described as having a “grassy” or “pungent” flavor. People
seem to either love the taste or hate it! However, “green foods” pioneer David Sandoval
noted that many people prefer the taste of KAMUT® wheatgrass juice to conventional
wheatgrass (3). Many people enjoy adding the powder to a juice or a smoothie for a refreshing drink (see recipes in this issue). For those who like the benefits of KAMUT®
wheatgrass juice but just cannot get used to the taste, KAMUT® wheatgrass juice powder
capsules are available. Because wheatgrass juice does not have gluten, many people who
have gluten sensitivities can safely consume this product.
Fresh wheatgrass juice has 10 calories per ounce. According to the Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center Integrative Medicine website, wheatgrass juice is a natural
source of chlorophyll, vitamins A, C, E, K, and B-Complex and iron, calcium, magnesium,
selenium, and amino acids. The benefits attributed to wheatgrass juice include “neutralizing
toxins and carcinogens, preventing tooth decay, reducing high blood pressure, and aiding
in the treatment and prevention of cancer” (1). Preliminary medical research indicates that
wheatgrass juice may improve response to cancer treatments, may assist with iron chelation in blood, and may improve symptoms of ulcerative colitis (4; 5; 6). To date, research
has been conducted on undifferentiated “wheat” plants. The KAMUT® trademark name
guarantees that wheatgrass products bearing its name are produced from non-hybridized,
non-GMO, and organically grown khorasan wheat.
Wheatgrass juice is thought to improve immune function, increase energy, support healthy
digestive function, to be anti-inflammatory, to have anti-oxidant qualities, among a myriad
of other health-enhancing qualities. Many people enjoy KAMUT® Wheatgrass juice not for
specific health reasons, but just for the overall feeling of well-being they gain from a “shot”
of KAMUT® wheatgrass juice each day. In addition, many have anecdotally reported that
it clears up skin rashes and irritations, eliminates the symptoms of sore throats, alleviates
body odor, and even keeps hair from graying (7)!

KI knows of no current research focusing on understanding the reported benefits of
KAMUT® wheatgrass juice; however, in December the National Institute of Health announced a funding opportunity of “Botanical Dietary Supplement Research Centers” to conduct innovative research to understand the “interactions between complex botanical products and human biology” (8). These research funds will undoubtedly lead to an increased
interest and understanding of products like KAMUT® Brand wheatgrass juice.
