Bangor Academy and Sixth Form College Bangor Academy is recognised as being at the forefront of education in Northern Ireland such as being awarded with the ICT Award by NAACE and becoming a hub for the Confucius Classroom project. There is a huge range of information about our school on our website. Situated in the heart of Bangor, the new school provides a landmark and a dynamic presence in its extensive site. The state of the art building has all the facilities expected in a new, modern, technologically and computer rich 21 st century school. The spacious layout of the building provides every opportunity for pupils to move in comfort and enjoy their lessons. Within the school there are some wonderful features including one of the largest school sports halls in Northern Ireland, an Assembly Hall which has the highest quality of lighting and sound equipment, four recording studios, two dining halls, and four lifts – the list is endless. Outside the grass, all-weather and synthetic pitches provide an immediate access to rich resources within the campus. Many pupils walk to school but others use regular public transport since its location is a short walk from the bus/train station. There is a dedicated bus service from and to Newtownards. In the ICT curriculum area we currently teach: Key stage 3 applications including Movie Maker, Scratch programming, Comic Life, Photostory, DTP, App designer, Expression Web design and PowerPoint. Key Stage 4: CCEA GCSE ICT, BTEC ITQ users for Key stage 4 “C” band pupils, Key Stage 5: CCEA Applied A level ICT units 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9. CURRICULUM STRUCTURE – KEY STAGE 3, OR YEARS 8, 9 AND 10 All pupils have access to the legal requirements of the curriculum as determined by the N.I. Education Reform Order and the further developments of the Order. The School continues to develop our curriculum and associated teaching methods to meet the continuing and changing demands of the Order. CURRICULUM STRUCTURE – KEY STAGE 4, OR YEARS 11 AND 12 All pupils study the compulsory subjects in this key stage, ie English, Mathematics and Science and choose other subjects from an extensive list and from within the terms of the Education Reform Order. CURRICULUM STRUCTURE – SIXTH FORM STUDIES Currently 20 AS and A2 level subjects are available. Criteria are set to enable pupils to gain access to these courses. CARING ARRANGEMENTS FOR PUPILS The pupils are organised into year groups and form classes. Each year group is under the leadership of a Head of Year and each form class is under the leadership of a Form Teacher. The Form Teacher carries out many roles, which can be summarised within one word – caring. The Form Teacher also becomes a support for the pupils. All Year 8 pupils follow an induction programme in order to help them settle into school. CLASS PLACEMENT Pupils are placed in classes relative to their ability, aptitude and achievement, and are regularly monitored and assessed throughout their school career. Movement between groups is possible depending on pupil progress. The Special Needs Co-ordinator liaises with all departments of the school to ensure that the needs of pupils are met. PARENTAL SUPPORT The school welcomes close contact with parents. Regular parent/teacher meetings will be available for each year group to discuss pupil progress. PUPIL APPEARANCE AND DEMEANOUR Pupils are expected to wear the school uniform smartly and to behave in a manner which brings credit to themselves, their family and their school. The school expects the co-operation of parents in these matters. EXTRA-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITY Very many extra-curricular activities are available to the pupils. Opportunities are normally available from the concert stage to the sports field, from school trips to Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, from music making to indoor sports and so on. Last year over 25 different activities were offered. All staff are encouraged to take part in the extensive extra-curricular programme. STAFF WELFARE The school places staff welfare at the top of its agenda. We recognise that there are many pressures in education and we provide regular sessions for staff to unwind. We offer staff Pilates, mindfulness sessions and other activities to help all staff manage the demands of the profession.
