The Deputy Director of the Office of Airport Safety and Standards assists the Director, Office of Airport
Safety and Standards, in leading the development of standards for safety, engineering and research of
U.S. airports, and sponsors and supervises research on airport design and construction. The incumbent
assists in the administration of the Airport Operating Certificates under Part 139 of the Federal Aviation
Regulations. He/she is also responsible for the implementation of Safety Management Systems (SMS) at
U.S. airports, establishing and ensuring the completion of safety goals for the annual FAA and ARP
Business Plans, and tracking progress throughout the year. The Deputy Director shares the Director's
responsibilities for leadership, direction, and performance of the Airport Safety and Operations Division,
Airports Engineering Division, including research and development activities of the Airport Research and
Development Group at the William J. Hughes Technical Center.
