I.
PROFILE OF ACMA
Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA)
The Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) is the apex body representing the interest
of the Indian Auto Component Industry.
The Auto Component industry in India has a strong positive multiplier effect as a key driver of economic growth.
Despite a very turbulent year, the industry clocked a turnover of Rs. 2,11,765 crores (USD 35.13 billion) in FY
2013-14, with an impressive CAGR of 14 percent over the last six years. Indian auto components are exported to
more than 160 countries and have been growing at 15 percent per annum over the past six years. Components
exports stood at Rs 61,487 crores (USD 10.2 billion) in FY 2013-14, accounting for 29 percent of overall industry
turnover.
ACMA represents over 700 companies, which contributes more than 85% of the total auto component output in
the organised sector. In the domestic market, they supply components to vehicle manufacturers as original
equipment, to tier-one suppliers, to state transport undertakings, defence establishments, railways and even to
the replacement market. A variety of components are being exported to OEM’s and after-markets world-wide.
ACMA has played a critical role in growth and development of the auto component industry in India. Its active
involvement in trade promotion, technology up-gradation, quality enhancement and collection and dissemination
of information has made it a vital catalyst for this industry’s development. Its other activities include participation
in international trade fairs, sending trade delegations overseas and bringing out publications on various subjects
related to the automotive industry.
ACMA’s charter is to develop a globally competitive Indian Auto Component Industry and strengthen its role in
national economic development as also promote business through international alliances.
ACMA is represented on a number of panels, committees and councils of the Government of India through which
it helps in the formulation of policies pertaining to the Indian automotive industry.
For exchange of information and especially for co-operation in trade matters, ACMA has signed Memoranda of
Understanding with its counterparts in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Italy,
Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, UK, USA
and Uzbekistan.

ACMA AWARDS JOURNEY
ACMA Awards have a long history of about 46 years. Excellence in Exports was the first Award instituted in 1966.
Thereafter Technology Award, Quality Awards & Productivity Awards were instituted. In the year 2002, Quality
Awards and Productivity Awards were merged and one single award was instituted, viz. Excellence in Quality &
Productivity Award. Manufacturing Excellence Award was instituted in the year 2003. Mfg. Excellence Award is
based on the Shingo Award Model instituted by Utah University, USA.

ACMA AWARDS TODAY
Today the ACMA Awards are the one of the most preferred recognitions of Excellence in the Auto Component
Industry in India.
ACMA Awards are given in recognition of outstanding performance of its members in the fields of:
(1) Excellence in Export
(2) Excellence in Technology
(3) Excellence in Quality & Productivity and
(4) Recognition for Manufacturing Excellence
(5) Excellence in HR
Every category has Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards (subject to Jury decision).
These Awards are distributed at the ACMA AGM (Annual General Meeting) every year in New Delhi in presence of
the distinguished guests, Government officials and Industry leaders.
ACMA Centre for Technology (ACT – A Division of ACMA) administers ACMA Awards process under the guidance
of Chairman ACT.
IV.
DETAILS OF CATEGORIES
Award application document & data, key Customer feedback and Manufacturing facility upkeep are considered
important factors while deciding the winners under the following categories.
Excellence in Export
(Small & Large Category)
The ACMA Export Award gives recognition to outstanding achievements of member units in the field of exports. It
aims at promoting export of value-added products. Criteria like net foreign exchange earned, consistency in
export, penetration into new markets etc., are also given due weightage for analyzing a company’s export
performance. Thus the aim of the Export Award is to recognize the component manufacturer’s actual export
performance along with manufacturing capabilities.
Excellence in Technology
(Small & Large Category)
ACMA Award for Excellence in Technology recognizes independent innovations by member companies within their
own fields of activity, which have, as a result, benefited their customers. The technology Award is given for
outstanding innovations by member companies through their efforts, which would benefit the Indian Automotive
Industry as a whole.
Companies can apply for Process Innovation or Product Innovation as appropriate.

Excellence in Quality and Productivity
(Small & Large Category)
ACMA introduced this Award to recognize outstanding achievements by member companies in the area of Quality
and Productivity. The award criteria focuses on the foundation elements needed to build a Quality and
Productivity culture in an organization.
Recognition for Manufacturing Excellence
(MSME & Large Category)
MSME Category:
ACMA introduced this Award to recognize outstanding achievements by Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises in the
areas of PQCDSM (Productivity, Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety & Morale)
The award is for “Recognizing Best performing MSMEs” and there are no separate categories for Export,
Technology and Q & P.
Large Category:
This recognizes organizations that use Best Manufacturing Strategies and Practices to achieve high
performance. It is based on the Shingo Prize Model that is currently administered by Utah University.
The “Recognition for Manufacturing Excellence” includes key elements of manufacturing starting with organisation
vision, leadership, strategy, support functions and employee involvement to achieve higher level of customer
satisfaction and business performance.
Excellence in HR
(MSEM, Small, Large & Special Category)
As a new initiative of HR, IR & Skill Development Committee, this award is being introduced this year with the
following key objectives:

Enhancing the Capability and HR Practices resulting in Performance Excellence and Customer Satisfaction
Provide platform to Showcase the best HR Practices and get recognition
This award will recognize organizations that design and implement the best HR Practices resulting in superior
business performance, engaged and developing employee workforce.
V.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
1. The turnover of registered ACMA Member company, including all its registered plants
will be considered
for deciding if the applicant falls under MSME, Small, Large or Special Category. Company needs to apply
for a particular plant under any Award category, subject to fulfilling company turnover criteria as per
table A Awards
2. If a plant has won gold trophy last year in any of the above categories, then that particular plant will not be

can apply for the award in that category. Companies who have won Silver or Bronze Trophy last year are
eligible to apply for the award in the same category this year.

3. The applicant company should be a member of ACMA as on 21st May.

As a step towards “Greening” ACMA Awards team have introduced ‘ACMA Awards Online Management
System’ from the year 2014. Members are requested to access online application document at

SCRUTINY & SITE DIAGNOSIS TEAM
XI.
Screening of applications & short listing for site diagnosis will be carried out by Industry Experts. Shortlisted
companies will undergo site diagnosis by External Assessors for all categories of awards.
Competency of External Assessors for Site Diagnosis
1. Professional Experience: Minimum 15 years of work experience in one or more of the following areas:
Production, Quality, New Product Development, Purchase, Commercial, Maintenance, Production Engineering,
Human Resources (either practicing or consulting) or academic experience of 10 years.
2. Other requirements: Knowledge on shop floor practices such as 5S, Safety, Improvement Tools and
Techniques for Productivity improvement and Quality Improvement, Inventory Management, Lean
manufacturing and similar.
3. Assessor Briefing Meeting: Guidelines are given to assessors during briefing meeting before Site diagnosis,
also benchmark datasheets provided to them.

Guidelines for shortlisted companies for Site Diagnosis
It is expected that the CEO is personally available on the day of the site visit.
To ensure smooth execution of the diagnosis process, respective companies are requested to follow the
guidelines given below.
1. One hard copy / soft Copy of company application and all major presentations in support of the agenda
points will be kept ready for the assessors at the time of the assessment.

2. The company coordinator will be the timekeeper to ensure that the time schedules allotted to various
agenda points are adhered to by company representatives.
3. This diagnosis is a major event and needs to treat as one. All concerned persons will be available with all
relevant documents and not allowed to get distracted by mobile/phone/urgent call up etc.
4. Specific attention is brought to the presentation on one or two unique initiatives that the company may
have taken in the previous year.
5.
To support the Site diagnosis report , relevant photographs need to be captured, Company can
take such photographs and provide to the Assessors during site diagnosis .
It is expected that the diagnosis process should be an enjoyable learning experience for the Company as
well the Assessors and hence all the interactions with the assessors should be brief , to the point and well
supported by way of documentation and visual condition as observed during shop visit.
