May 3, 2015 Fifth Sunday of Easter Services: THE ADVENT • BIRMINGHAM, www.AdventBirmingham.org News & Events This Sunday: OF AL Week of May 3, 2015 A Word from Stephen McCarthy Lately Anthony Trollope’s great Victorian novel, The Way We Live Now, has been on my mind, not simply because its title remains apt but for the secret to its staying power. Trollope’s work is driven not so much by plot as by character portrait. The machinations of the shady financier, Melmotte, or Lady Carbury’s unbending designs to advance by way of her dissolute son’s nuptials, or even Mrs. Hurtle’s confused predicament having flaunted the norms of marriage and intimacy, are all depictions of people with vision and flair for authoring the story of their own lives. The trouble arises in how circumstances and events resist their authorship. With its rich layering of plot upon subplot, the book offers an amazing escape not merely into another world but also from the very way we seem to construct our lives and literature around some single tension in need of resolution. Yet for precisely that reason critics long rejected Trollope; this world favors an ac- count of deeds far more than any consideration of character. And so we live as résumé builders, whether of career on LinkedIn or of the ever more anachronistically named “private life” on Facebook. How tiresome it all can be! How easy it is to lose heart in the struggle to achieve one’s own vision of oneself. For even when we are successful, when the path before us is made easy to enjoy, we know it is not ours to walk forever. Indeed, this outward world is already passing away. So many of my own prayers are expressions of anxiety about the way before me, of my desire to decide its course. They are entreaties to God I stand by, for at the very least they help loosen the grip of dreams beyond my control. Yet surely in your prayers you’ve experienced something of how praying forms character. So kneeling before the Lord we have the opportunity to glimpse Christ’s glory, to listen for his voice. Escaping into his presence changes and refreshes us, reminding us of the final destination that awaits us because of the path he trod. - Stephen So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. - 2 Corinthians 4:16 Adult Education: 10:10 - 10:50 a.m. Adult classes will not meet this Sunday due to Confirmation. Classes will resume next Sunday, May 10. Children’s & Youth Education: Classes will be offered for 3-years through 5th grade this Sunday. Classes for 6th grade and older will not meet. For many children in Birmingham, summer is a time without school, and that means no access to free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch programs. Grace Episcopal Church in Woodlawn has a summer day program to assist these kids, and Advent will host a Food Drive on Sunday, May 10, to support Grace’s program. Please bring canned chicken and tuna to Clingman Commons so that we can help Grace make well-balanced meals for these kids. They need both large, economy-sized cans for meals they cook for participants as well as pop-top, single-serving cans they can send home with kids. Please contact Talitha Bailey (401-7626, TalithaJD@aol.com) if you have any questions or would like to help.
