Am e l i a I s l a n d Q u i l t G u i l d I n c . N ew s l e t t e r aiquilters.com May 2015 Hello AIQ Guild members, We hope you can join us as we welcome An Marshall as our speaker this month. We will be voting on our new set of officers, and will install our new officers at the June meeting. Hopefully we will have some "Show and Tell" from our workshop last month, also. Hope to see you at the May 12 meeting. Leslie Kiger May Program: An Marshall, Life Quilts Our May program, the last of this guild year, promises to open a quilting door that is likely to occupy your thoughts and creativity during the summer break. Member An Marshall will be presenting her unique quilt process entitled Life Quilts. An will be showing her original quilt design that started her down the “life quilt” explorative path, and will be guiding members through exercises to begin the process for your own “life quilt”. An is an exceedingly talented traditional and art quilter who is an active member of the St. Augustine Piecemakers Quilt Guild and the Jacksonville area Fiber Art Network as well as AIQG. As a member of the St. Augustine guild, An contributed to two recent fabric art quilt projects honoring the City of St. Augustine. In honor of the 450th celebration of the City, she was one of five highly skilled quilters who created, designed and assembled a fundraiser quilt to commemorate St. Augustine’s colorful past. The second recent project entitled “Pieces of History,” is an 11-part panoramic collaborative quilt depicting the St. Augustine 19th Century harbor. The “slice” quilt by members of the St. Augustine Guild was on display in the City and remains on view at the Fruitcove Library. An is a full time real estate consultant in St. Augustine Beach. There were no new members and two guests were introduced. A motion to approve the March 2015 minutes was received from Stuart Vanderbloemen with a second by Diane Keagy. Linda Martin announced that on Saturday (April 11, 2015) she attended the opening of the Island Art Guild’s The Arts Are Alive Project. A grouping of totem poles in the pocket park on Centre Street represent a range of non-profits from around Nassau County. Thanks to Tracy Weise, the artist who did the totem for the quilt guild. The totem represents the various aspects of the guild’s work with an emphasis on outreach to the community. The exhibit will be in the park for a year. Tracy Weiss explained her artistic process. The pole spins; it is the only one in the grouping that moves. She emphasized the guild’s service in her work as well as the support and love guild members give to each other. Tracy stated that the love in the guild is palpable. Leslie received a request from Carol at Ship’s Lantern that the guild pick up the quilt display racks in storage at Cube Smart because the Ship’s Lantern needs the storage space. Mindy Chabot volunteered to take on the issue. The guild will need an 8’ x 10’ space to store the racks until the next quilt show. If members know of such a space, please contact Mindy. Sherry Cobb-Thompson announced April birthdays. Leslie noted that Andrea Golding has been nominated for the position of membership chair. Mindy Chabot announced that, although the Peck Center will not allow the guild to actually reserve a date for the 2017 quilt show until the middle of 2016, the center staff has penciled in the event. In the meantime, the guild can continue to look for a location that may be better. The quilt show dates are February 17-18, 2017. In further quilt show news, Mindy encouraged all guild members to volunteer to help with the quilt show in one or many capacities. Volunteer organizing meetings will be convened on Saturday April 25th at 10:00 am and Monday, April 27 at 7:00 pm at Dell Dunman’s home. Members need to plan to attend only one of the meetings as they will be identical. Many of the quilt show jobs are already filled. As the number of quilt show organizing meetings increases over the coming months, the guild will try to have the meetings immediately before guild meetings to avoid additional travel by volunteers. Show and tell included a first quilt, charity quilts, a habitat for humanity quilt, a quilt of valor, and a first attempt at trapunto. The program was presented by Linda Kay Krause called “Nature as an Inspiration for Art.” The meeting adjourned at 8:40 pm. The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 7:00 pm. Respectfully Submitted, Andrea Golding PAGE 4 Am e l i a I s l a n d Q u i l t G u i l d I n c .
