The question "What do I want to do with my life?" is more difficult to answer for
today's twenty-somethings than it was for their parents--not only do today's jobs
look different, but career paths are altogether less of a sure thing. It's in this
modern context that Lodro Rinzler provides Generation Y with wisdom for
approaching the whole issue of livelihood--not only how to find work, but how to
bring compassion and meaning into the job once you've got it. It's wisdom from
the Buddhist tradition that works for anyone, presented with the clever humor that
made Lodro's first book so popular. The book is divided into three parts: Part One focuses on deciding what you
want to do with your life, job-wise and otherwise; Part Two explores how to be
beneficial to others, beginning with those at your office and moving out to the
world at large; and Part Three shows how to turn even the most difficult work
situations into opportunities for awakening. Lodro has a gift for presenting the Buddhist teachings in a way that's practical,
funny, and entertaining, but the book is ultimately quite serious: it's about using
your livelihood to wake up.
A dream track record: Lodro's first book, The Buddha Walks into a Bar . . ., released in
January 2012, has netted more than 43,000 copies to date and continues to reorder
strongly. His second book, Walk Like a Buddha (Oct. 2013), has sold 14,000 copies to date.
Wisdom for a generation in crisis: Career expectations for young people today are
different than those for previous generations. The path from college to a rewarding job is
far less certain. It's people in this situation that Lodro addresses with wisdom for looking
at work in new ways.
For Buddhists--and semi-Buddhists: Lodro has an especially strong following among
the "spiritual-but-not-religious" demographic of twenty- and thirty-somethings--the
ones among whom one often hears the phrase "If I'm anything, I guess I'm a Buddhist . . ."
A well-regarded young teacher who speaks to his generation: The son of American
Buddhist parents, Lodro Rinzler is a "dharma brat" who went on to become a Buddhist
teacher. He teaches in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition and has led numerous retreats
and workshops. He writes a regular column, "What Would Sid Do?" (Sid = Siddhartha, the
Buddha), for Beliefnet.com and for the Huffington Post.
More from Lodro: His new book on meditation, Sit Like a Buddha, is scheduled for
December 2014
Author Bio: LODRO RINZLER is a teacher in the Shambhala tradition of Vajrayana
Buddhism. He has taught numerous workshops and retreats. His column, "What
Would Sid Do?" (Sid = Siddhartha, the Buddha), appears regularly in the Huffington
Post and is the basis for his second book, Walk Like a Buddha: Even if Your Boss
Sucks, Your Ex Is Torturing You, and You're Hungover Again.

How making a vow--consciously setting an intention--can be a powerful tool
for achieving all sort of goals, from the author of the best-selling Mindful
Eating.

Making a vow is a powerful mindfulness practice--and all you have to do to tap
into that power is set your intention consciously. A vow can be as "small" as the
aspiration to smile at someone at least once every day, or as "big" as marriage; as
personal as deciding to be mindful when picking up the phone or as universal as
vowing to save all sentient beings. It can be deeply spiritual, utterly ordinary, or
both. Zen teacher Jan Chozen Bays looks to traditional Buddhist teachings to show
the power of vows--and then applies that teaching broadly to the many vows we
make. She shows that if we work with vows consciously, they set us in the
direction of achieving our goals, both temporal and spiritual.
A best-selling author: Jan Chozen Bays's three books have sold more than 72,000 copies
altogether. A powerful jump start for acheiving your goals: Vows, taken on consciously, become
like an engine powering you toward a life of focused purpose. You do it anyway--why not do it for a reason? We set intentions all the time
unconsciously (the daily Starbucks venti double latte . . .). If you do it consciously, the
intention can set you in a direction that leads toward a goal--and it powers you to get
there.
A broad appeal--way beyond Zennists: Bays's Zen-based teaching is known for being
accessible to everyone, whether they have any interest in Zen or not.

Mindfulness in Action is a book about meditation, about the practice and
experience of mindfulness and awareness, and about how these meditative
qualities influence our everyday lives. It is a practitioner's book: a book for people
who want to practice meditation and also apply meditative insight to their lives. It
includes practice instructions, as well as insights into the principles and aspects of
meditation that are the foundations of mindfulness.
Shaped for today's mindfulness audience, this book presents a broad, secular
approach to meditation and teaches how to practice awareness to improve one's
life.
A great master's summation of the heart of mindfulness, giving teachings appropriate
for a beginner, but that could last a lifetime.
Mindfulness on the cover of Time magazine: Meditation and mindfulness are no longer
esoteric or obscure. From the cover of Time, to the Wall Street Journal, to corporate offices
everywhere, mindfulness is a part of our culture. A book for the mindfulness community from a well-known voice: This is a book for
those interested in mindfulness and meditation, a huge and growing community. There
are no foreign terms in this book, and references to Buddhism are almost nonexistent.
Chögyam Trungpa always spoke in plain language, and this book has been edited to
maximize that approach. Ever-increasing visibility: Chögyam Trungpa's books are more popular now than ever.
The author died more than 25 years ago, yet he has over 38,000 Facebook fans, and there
is growing interest in this work.
Taking mindfulness one step further: Whereas most books on mindfulness leave off at a
certain point of simply incorporating meditation practice and mindfulness into our lives,
this book takes it a step further, exploring the natural progression from mindfulness to
awareness, or insight, and also how compassion naturally arises as an outgrowth of our
experiences of opening and letting go in meditation.
"Mindfulness is the direct path to insight--and no one has ever illuminated that wonderful
path more skillfully than Chögyam Trungpa."--Pema Chödrön "From one of the great spiritual teachers of all times, a book on mindfulness that inspires a
fresh and open engagement with our inner and outer world. This guide to meditation has
psychological depth, humor and, above all, an illuminating wisdom that dances through
every page."--Tara Brach, Ph.D., author of Radical Acceptance and True Refuge
Author Bio: CHÖGYAM TRUNGPA (1940-1987)--meditation master, teacher, and
artist--founded Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, the first Buddhist-inspired
university in North America; the Shambhala Training program; and an international
association of meditation centers known as Shambhala International. He is the
author of numerous books, including more than 25 published posthumously.
Recent titles include Smile at Fear: Awakening the True Heart of Bravery and Work,
Sex, Money: Real Life on the Path of Mindfulness. CAROLYN ROSE GIMIAN has been
a meditation teacher for more than 35 years. A senior student of Chögyam
Trungpa, she is the editor of many of his books, including Shambhala: The Sacred

The first-century classic Prajnaparamita Hridaya Sutra may be the best known
of all the Buddhist Scriptures. It's a key Zen text, chanted daily by many, but is
studied extensively in the Tibetan tradition too. In just about thirty-five lines, it
expresses the truth of impermanence and the release of suffering that results
from the understanding of that truth with a breathtaking economy of language.
Kazuaki Tanahashi's guide to the Heart Sutra is the result of a life spent working
with it and living it. He outlines the history and meaning and then analyzes the
text line by line in its various forms (Sanskrit, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan,
Mongolian, and various key English translations), providing a deeper
understanding of the history and etymology of the elusive words than is generally
available to the nonspecialist, yet with a clear emphasis on the relevance of the
text to practice. It includes a fresh, modern translation of the text by the author
and Roshi Joan Halifax.
The best-known of all Zen texts: The Heart Sutra is chanted daily in Zen centers
throughout the world in all the traditions--there simply is no Buddhist text better known
and loved by Zennists. Unlike any other commentary: The Heart Sutra has been the subject of commentary for
nearly 2,000 years--there are many commentaries available today, but none of them
employs this level of textual analysis.
Precursor of modern physics: Scientists find in the Heart Sutra hints of what we now
understand about the nature of matter: "Form is emptiness, emptiness is form." Includes the definitive new translation: Kaz Tanahashi and Roshi Joan Halifax's fresh
translation of the Heart Sutra is informed by deep study and practice as well as by a
careful analysis of each word. This translation will serve as a reference point for all others.
Author Bio: KAZUAKI TANAHASHI is the translator and editor of numerous works
by the great Japanese Zen master Eihei Dogen. He is also a renowned calligrapher,
a pioneer of the genre of "one stroke painting," and the creator of multicolor enso
(Zen circles). His brushwork has been shown in solo exhibitions in galleries,
museums, and universities all over the world.

Tim Burkett was twenty when he met Suzuki Roshi, and it was love at first sight.
He immediately quit pursuing the career in law to which his illustrious family of
jurists inclined him, and became a serious Zen student. He went on to become a
licensed psychotherapist and then followed Katagiri Roshi to Minneapolis to
become a founder of the Zen scene there. He never left. Now that he's himself a
revered Zen teacher, he's decided to articulate his own view of Zen. He structures
the teaching according to five not-necessarily sequential levels on the road to
enlightenment: (1) commitment to the path, (2) studying the self, (3) cultivating
compassion and equanimity, (4) perseverance, and (5) emptiness. This is an
introduction to Zen teaching that reads like an intriguing memoir, as the author
discovers the teaching in the people, places, and experiences he encounters in the
course of his practice.
Delightful vignettes of two beloved teachers: Tim Burkett recounts many
charming--and hilarious--stories of Suzuki Roshi, Katagiri Roshi, and others, stories that
are told here for the first time.
A fun-to-read intro to Zen: Unlike other introductory Zen books, this one includes
elements of memoir that make it particularly compelling.
An esteemed Midwestern Zen master: Tim Burkett, abbot for many years of the
Minnesota Zen Center, is one of the key Zen teachers of the Midwest region. His book is
long awaited by students.

With practical teachings and detailed instructions, Ken Wilber introduces
Integral Mindfulness, a new way of practicing the widely popular meditation.
Integral Mindfulness applies many of the leading-edge insights of Ken Wilber's
Integral Theory--the first system to combine Eastern teachings on the five stages
of awakening with the eight major Western models of human development, thus
portraying the complete path of human evolution. In addition to all the benefits to
body, mind, and spirit that standard mindfulness meditation confers, practicing
Integral Mindfulness promises a more powerful approach to personal
transformation and brings within reach the fullest experience of Enlightenment
possible.
Beginning with as little as fifteen to thirty minutes of daily sessions, the
meditator can gradually expand from there by slowly and easily adding significant
aspects of the practice. Meditation instructions and step-by-step guided
contemplations are given in detail. Readers learn how to create a graph to track
progress and discover natural strengths and potentials. The book also offers
recommended readings and resources to facilitate further study.
Integral Mindfulness: In this completely new approach to mindfulness practice, Ken
Wilber expands an ancient meditation technique by presenting it through the lens of
cutting-edge Integral theory. According to Wilber, other mindfulness techniques tend to
focus exclusively on cultivating more concentrated levels of consciousness, but they don't
address important personal growth issues. Wilber offers a rounded, wholistic approach to
mindfulness, resulting in a powerful method for waking up--and growing up.
Accessible through powerful exercises: Many of Wilber's popular books are long and
heavy in theory. This work is concise and full of guided exercises. Wilber shows readers
how to put Integral Meditation into practice, and he provides tips for integrating it into
your daily life.
Long-awaited book from a revolutionary philosopher: It has been almost a decade
since the publication of Wilber's last full-length book. His vast fan base has been anxiously
awaiting his next work. And this is the first of several new books he's about to release.
Author Bio: KEN WILBER is the founder of Integral Institute and the cofounder of
Integral Life. He is an internationally acknowledged leader and the preeminent
scholar of the Integral stage of human development. He is the author of more than
twenty books, including A Brief History of Everything, A Theory of Everything, Integral Spirituality, No Boundary, Grace and Grit, and Sex, Ecology, Spirituality.

A new approach to a popular practice: Traditional Tibetan loving-kindness meditation
begins with compassion for the suffering of others, and this has sometimes proven
difficult for Western practitioners. As a way of adapting the practice for Westerners, Tulku
Thondup offers an approach that emphasizes the enjoyment of positive feelings of love
and takes the reader through four progressive stages of meditation.
Benefits of loving-kindness meditation: Developing loving-kindness is one of the most
effective ways to become happy. It increases our positive emotions and helps to develop a
greater awareness of the goodness in the world around us. And according to the Buddhist
teaching of karma, it ensures a joyful rebirth in the future and sets us on the path of
enlightenment.
Designed for beginners: Detailed explanations and guided instructions are designed to
be accessible to readers with no previous knowledge of Buddhism. The meditation can be
practiced in as little as thirty minutes a session. Question-and-answer sections address
common concerns, and a glossary of special terms make the book user-friendly.
Appeal to a broad audience: Buddhist books on loving-kindness have become
exceedingly popular in the West, evidenced especially by the success of Pema Chödrön's
numerous titles on the subject. Tulku Thondup's four-stage approach to loving-kindness
meditation will appeal to this wide audience, from beginners and non-Buddhists to
serious, longstanding practitioners.
A widely respected teacher: Tulku Thondup is one of the most esteemed teachers of
traditional Tibetan Buddhism living in the US. His work has received praise from authors
such as Daniel Goleman, Joan Borysenko, Dean Ornish, Larry Dossey, Herbert Benson,
Sharon Salzberg, and Sogyal Rinpoche.
Guided audio and video meditations: Readers will be provided with a URL to access
guided meditations of the practices described in the book, presented by Tulku Thondup
himself.
Author Bio: TULKU THONDUP was born in eastern Tibet and moved to India in
1958. He came to the United States in 1980 as a visiting scholar at Harvard
University. For the past three decades he has lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts,
engaging in translation, research, and writing under the auspices of the
Buddhayana Foundation. He also travels in North America, Europe, and Asia to
give talks on Buddhism and lead meditation workshops.

A program that not only leads to healthy relationships but that also steers us
toward our own potential greatness--from well-known blogger and dating
expert Ken Page.
Lose weight. Be confident. Keep your partner guessing. At the end of the day,
this soulless approach to dating doesn't lead to love, it leads to insecurity and
desperation. In Deeper Dating, Ken Page presents a new path to love. Out of his
decades of work as a psychotherapist--and out of his own personal struggle to
find love--Page teaches that the greatest magnet for real love lies in our "Core
Gifts"--the places of our deepest sensitivity, longing, and passion. Deeper Dating
guides us to discover our own Core Gifts and then teaches us to extricate these
gifts from the wounds that keep them buried, empowering us to express them
with courage, generosity, and discrimination in our dating life. When we do this,
something miraculous happens: we begin to attract people who love us for who we
really are, we become more self-assured and emotionally available, and we lose
our taste for relationships that chip away at our self-esteem. Without losing a
pound, changing our hairstyle, or buying a single new accessory, we find healthy
love moving closer. Deeper Dating integrates the best of human intimacy theory

Timing is everything. One bad set doesn't mean it's time to quit. Have patience:
great marriages, like great comedy careers, take time. The cardinal rules of
comedy have an uncanny resemblance to the rules of building a strong marriage.
In Take My Spouse, Please, writer and comedian Dani Klein Modisett artfully lays
out 15 axioms of marriage and, not coincidentally, axioms of life. With her
trademark humor and sharp yet reverent tone, Dani offers a map for navigating
your marriage through rough patches, bad jokes, and a bum audience.
Take My Spouse, Please shows how these 15 rules of comedy, when applied to
marriage, keep you and your spouse connected, enjoying each other and getting
through those inevitable tough times. Seeing your primary relationship through
the lens of a comic who's not afraid to confess her mishaps will shake it awake in
a way that no other book on marriage will. It will help you see that there is
(almost) always room to laugh at a trying situation and, more importantly, with
each other. In addition to the author's lively anecdotes, Dani has interviewed dozens of
comedians, comic writers, and marriage counselors to deliver more marriage
"material." The wisdom gleaned from these devotees of both comedy and marriage
supports the core premise: humor matters. The celebration of humor that
follows--from gut-busting anecdotes to earnest advice--is the heart and soul of
the book.
Serious subject turned on its head: Not your average relationship book, Take My
Spouse, Please invites you and your partner to laugh at marriage--and yourselves--as you
read. Celebrity contributors: While writing this book, Dani has interviewed dozens of couples in
the entertainmnet industry, including Jerry Stiller, Anne Meara, Patricia Heaton, and many
others.
Inspiring, positive self-improvement book: Instead of focusing on how to fix what's
broken, this book shows you how to enhance and celebrate what you've already got. Author Bio: DANI KLEIN MODISETT is the author/editor of Afterbirth: True Stories
You Won't Read in a Parenting Magazine and the producer of the stage show of the
same name. She is also the creator of Not What I Signed Up For, a stage show
about marriage that inspired this book, and several web series, including "How to

Simple and informal: Tibetan Buddhist teachings can often be difficult for novice
practitioners due to their complexity of form and numerous references to scripture. These
teachings are markedly personal and accessible, addressing common concerns and
questions about the path while also inviting the reader to taste the deeper riches of the
tradition.
Gems of wisdom for lifelong contemplation: Phuntsok's style is candid and pithy,
weaving proverbs and traditional sayings from Tibet's greatest sages with stories and
observations from his own life. Together they offer insights into the fundamentals of
Buddhist practice that are timeless and tangible.
Edited by an important and uniquely qualified contemporary teacher: Khenpo
Sodargye was one of Jigme Phuntsok's closest students and conveys his spiritual lineage as
no other could. He also carries the prestige of the Larung Gar Buddhist academy, one of the
largest and most influential centers of Buddhist learning worldwide.
Author Bio: H.H. JIGME PHUNTSOK (1933-2004) was a prominent teacher in the
Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism who was recognized as a terton (treasure
revealer) and renowned for his mastery of Dzogchen. Unlike many Tibetan masters
who fled to India and the West, Jigme Phuntsok remained in China throughout the
Cultural Revolution and played a major role in maintaining and reviving Buddhism
in the region. He established a nonsectarian Buddhist community called Larung
Gar near the town of Sertar in China's Sichuan Province, where he taught thousands
of students, many of Han Chinese ethnicity. KHENPO SODARGYE is one of the
primary leaders of the Buddhist academy at Larung Gar and was H.H. Jigme
Phuntsok's chief translator. He has traveled extensively to the United States,
Canada, Germany, France, Holland, the United Kingdom, and throughout Asia to
offer teachings, and he continues to teach widely at schools and universities in
China and abroad. He is also the founder of numerous Chinese schools and

Being Taoist is one of the most readable books on Taoist philosophy available.
It shines a light on exactly what it takes to live a Taoist life. Taoist living rests on
four pillars--the public, the domestic, the private, and the spirit lives. Not only do
Taoists strive to live these four aspects fully and in a balanced way, they also
believe there is an outlook and an art to each of them. Eva Wong uses the
teachings of Taoist masters (one for each pillar) to explain the essential concepts.
She then gives voice to these texts--simplifying them, removing barriers to
understanding, and making them completely accessible and relevant to the
modern reader. Wong is a clear and enthusiastic guide to this intriguing spiritual Way, and she
challenges us to stop, reflect, and ask ourselves: Do we balance the public,
domestic, private, and spirit aspects in our lives? Do we emphasize some at the
expense of the others? Do we ever think about unifying worldly and spiritual
wisdom in our lives?
Taoist philosophy made acessible and relevant to contemporary life: Eva Wong has
written one of the clearest and most usable books available on embracing the tenets of a
Taoist life.

This is the ultimate go-to guide for learning how to meditate. It contains all
the instructions you'll need to get started in a remarkably short space, but it also
shows you how to make meditation practice a permanent part of your life, infusing
it with wisdom and compassion as you go about your day. And it's instruction in
the voice of the meditation teacher the young spiritual-but-not-religious crowd
have come to trust: Lodro Rinzler, a young Buddhist teacher who speaks to the
twenty- and thirty-something crowd in a way that has made his first book, The
Buddha Walks into a Bar..., a best seller. Lodro begins by challening you to
understand why you want to meditate in the first place, then, after the basic
instructions, he shows how to prioritize your practice among your other daily
activities and make it the center of all of them. He then shows you how to bring
the wisdom and insight gained from meditation into all aspects of life.
A Shambhala best seller: Lodro's Buddha Walks into a Bar... has sold 50,000 copies since
its release in January 2012. A voice for the spiritual-but-not-religious: Lodro speaks to this increasingly large
demographic, whose members often say things like, "If I'm anything, I'm a Buddhist . . ."
but who eschew formal religious practice. A voice for the under-35 crowd: Lodro's funny, irreverent, and readable presentation of
spirituality has been a big hit with students and young professionals. No-frills meditation: This is one of the most concise guides to meditation practice there
is.
More from Lodro: His next book, The Buddha Walks into the Office, is scheduled for

Yoga philosophy and practice is increasingly being used in therapeutic settings
with great efficacy to help treat eating disorders. In this book, Sarahjoy Marsh, a
yoga teacher, counselor, and meditation teacher, offers a program using the tools
and philosophy of yoga for addressing addiction--specifically, food addiction,
disordered eating patterns, body image issues, and emotional eating. She educates
the reader about both the nature of addiction and the philosophy of yoga and
offers a methodical approach to recovery that is neither dogmatic nor rigid;
rather, it is empathic, hopeful, and deliberate.
Full of clear, empathic advice and photographs of the step-by-step practices,
this book will help alleviate the isolation that people with eating disorders feel;
offer strategies for changing the behaviors; and give clear guidelines about the
processes of recovery and the development of new life skills, which are taught in
the book.
Calming, practical steps to break disordered eating patterns: The author includes
"yoga moments" throughout the book--simple practices, exercises, and meditations to
bring relief when your feel stress or loss of control around food. Yoga as an effective way of addressing eating problems: The yoga perspective on
recovery addresses the whole self; it sees that extreme behaviors are symptoms that we're
out of balance with ourselves. Yoga also alters brain chemistry by increasing circulation
and respiration, quiets the nervous system, eases depression, and soothes anxiety. Author is an authority in the field: Sarahjoy Marsh is a certified yoga teacher, has an MA
in counseling, and has been a student of yoga and vipassana meditation (mindfulness and
insight meditation) since 1989. She has specialized in addiction and eating disorders since
2001. She is the founder of Amrita, a sanctuary for yoga located in Portland, Oregon. The
center is known for its integrated approach to yoga, mindfulness, and recovery. Author Bio: SARAHJOY MARSH is a certified yoga teacher with nineteen years of

Travel with William Scott Wilson, esteemed translator of samurai philosophy,

of Japanese history, literature, and culture; and warm and readable writing style
make this a book that will be treasured as much by armchair travelers as by
tourists.
The only contemporary book in English devoted to the Kiso Road: Though the road is
described in various travel guides, no other book exists in English that is devoted to
unpacking the history, lore, and culture of this very popular tourist destination. A practical guidebook as well as a great read: This travel guide through a less modern,
less commercialized part of Japan will appeal to those who want a window into the
historical, literary, and artistic significance of this very important road.
Best-selling translator and authority on samurai culture and philosophy: William Scott
Wilson is the best-selling translator of Japanese and Chinese classics, including Hagakure.
He is recognized as the foremost translator of classic samurai texts. In this book, Wilson is
the storyteller rather than the translator, and his voice is engaging and distinctive.
Author Bio: WILLIAM SCOTT WILSON is the foremost translator into English of
traditional Japanese texts on samurai culture. He received BA degrees from
Dartmouth College and the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies, and an MA in
Japanese literary studies from the University of Washington. His best-selling

One of the elements of the Eightfold Path the Buddha taught is Right
Concentration: the one-pointedness of mind that, together with ethics, livelihood,
meditation, and so forth, leads to the ultimate freedom from suffering. The Jhanas
are the method the Buddha himself taught for achieving Right Concentration. They
are a series of eight successive states, beginning with bliss and moving on toward
radically nonconceptual states. The fact that they can usually be achieved only
during prolonged meditation retreat tends to keep them shrouded in mystery.
Leigh Brasington is here to unshroud them. He takes away the mystique and gives
instructions for them in plain, accessible language, noting the various pitfalls to
avoid along the way, and then providing a wealth of material on the theory of
jhana practice--all geared toward the practitioner rather than the scholar.
An easy target audience: This book is perfect for the Insight Meditation
audience--readers of the books of Joseph Goldstein and Jack Kornfield, and with all the
folks who go on retreat at venues such as Spirit Rock in California or Insight Meditation
Society in Barre, Massachusetts.
But more: The jhana states don't belong to Insight Meditation--the practice is relevant to
all Buddhists.
The jhana dude: Leigh Brasington has taught more than 135 retreats on the jhanas since
1997, and he continues to lead many every year. He's well known for this teaching
throughout the Insight Meditation world.
The accessible jhanas: Leigh's jhana teaching is based on the earlier Pali scriptures,
particularly the Sā m aññaphala Sutta, in which the Buddha asserts that the jhana states are
attainable by most people. This is to be distinguished from the jhana teachings of the later
Visuddhimagga, in which attainment of the states is said to be a rare thing.
Author Bio: LEIGH BRASINGTON studied the jhanas with the late Ven. Ayya Khema,
who authorized him to teach retreats on the jhanas. He was also empowered to
teach by Jack Kornfield. He teaches numerous jhana retreats throughout the year,
at venues that include Cloud Mountain, Barre Center for Buddhist Studies, Gaia
House, Vallecitos, and Southern Dharma. This is his first book.

Teachings on the practice of things-as-they-are, through commentaries on a
legendary Chinese Zen figure.
The ninth-century Tang dynasty Chinese master Dongshan is an important
ancestor of the Zen tradition that has spread widely throughout the world in the
twentieth century. He features prominently in koan texts and teaching stories, but
he's not been written about or translated much in English yet. Dan Leighton comes
to the rescue with this excellent book that takes the texts and teachings attributed
to Dongshan, as well as the teaching stories and koan cases about him, and
provides commentary for understanding the teaching of the House of Caodong
he's associated with, particularly as it relates to "suchness"-- tathata, the
absolute and true nature inherent in all appearance--focusing on the practical
relevance of the teachings Dongshan represents to the practice and life of us folks
today.

By now, we've all heard someone say, "It must have been his karma" or "She
had bad karma." But what is karma, really? Does karmic theory say that we are
helpless victims of our past? Is all karma bad, or can there be good karma too? Is
reincarnation the same as the Buddhist theory of rebirth? In this short and
eminently readable book, Traleg Kyabgon answers these questions and more by
elucidating the Buddha's teachings on karma and rebirth. He distinguishes the
Buddhist view of karma and rebirth from related notions of karma and
reincarnation found in the Hindu tradition, explains why the notion of karma is
indispensable to the theory and practice of Buddhism, and demonstrates how
karmic theory provides a foundation for morality that doesn't require belief in God.
Throughout he shows how to work with karma intelligently to bring about
beneficial changes in the way we relate to our thoughts, feelings, and
circumstances.
The definitive book on karma: There is some uncertainty among Western students of
Buddhism about the status of Buddhist karmic theory. Is it a relic from the past or a
foundational doctrine? Traleg Rinpoche addreses these concerns head-on and shows why
the practice of Buddhist Dharma can't be divorced from Buddhist karmic theory.
Written explicitly for a modern Western audience: This is not a translation of a classic
Tibetan work but a new book written in English explicitly for a modern Western audience.
Brings theory and practice together: Shows how Buddhist karmic theory empowers us to
bring about positive changes in our lives.

As children spend more of their time on tablets and smartphones, using apps
specially engineered to capture their attention, parents are concerned about the
effects of so much technology use--and feel powerless to intervene. They want
their kids to be competent and competitive in their use of technology, but they
also want to prevent the attention problems that can develop from overuse. Lucy
Jo Palladino shows that the key is to help kids build awareness and control over
their own attention, and in this guide she gives parents the tools to do exactly
that, in seven straightforward, evidence-based steps. Parents will learn the best practices to guide children to understand and
control their attention--and to recognize and resist when their attention is being
"snatched." This approach can be modified for kids of all ages. Parents will also
learn the critical difference between voluntary and involuntary attention, new
findings about brain development, and what puts children at risk for attention
disorders.
Practical approach for kids of all ages: Palladino's straightforward, evidence-based
process will help kids learn how to take charge of their own attention and break the grip of
the iPads, iPhones, PlayStations, and laptops. With a few changes and modifications, the
approach can be used for kids as young as five and as old as sixteen.
Does not demonize technology: Palladino wants to help parents understand how
technology affects their kids' minds and attention spans and how to set sensible limits
around its use. She doesn't demonize technology--which has become an essential part of
the learning process for school-age kids; nor does she blame the parents who see both
the benefits and drawbacks of this tool--and who are as captivated by/addicted to
technology as their kids are. In this book, Palladino strives to help parents and kids find
out how much technology is just right.
Will appeal to a wide audience: This book will appeal not only to parents but also to
educators, mental health professionals, holistic health proponents, and adults with
attention issues (with or without adult ADHD).
Author is well-respected in the field: Palladino has been a practicing psychologist and
an expert on attention skills for 35 years. She teaches attention training to parents,
educators, and school psychologists in seminars throughout the US. In her private practice,
she has seen hundreds of children and teens with attention problems. Author Bio: LUCY JO PALLADINO, PhD, is an award-winning clinical psychologist,

The first pre- and postnatal book geared specifically to experienced yoga
practitioners--from an established author, with contributions from the
leaders in the field.
You've been practicing yoga for years. It is a part of the way you live, move,
and breathe. And then . . . you get pregnant. Pregnancy can throw any woman a
curve ball. Even established and experienced yoga practitioners will likely find that
their body, mind, and practice are challenged during pregnancy, birth, and
motherhood. This book is the yoga practitioner's companion through this period,
offering practical advice, step-by-step asana sequences, pranayama practices, and
meditation techniques, all of which are designed to help new mothers connect
more deeply to their experience and prepare for their journey--physically,
mentally, and spiritually. Grounded in both ancient wisdom and contemporary knowledge, Yoga Mama
covers each trimester, labor and birth, and the postpartum years. The beautifully
photographed sequences include modifications and suggestions to accommodate
a growing belly and to address the concerns or challenges that may arise during
this time. Holistic and ayurvedic medicine perspectives help women understand
what is happening in their bodies at every juncture, and personal stories connect
them to pregnant women everywhere. Through practice, self-reflection, and
learning how to let go, yoga gives us the opportunity to be an active, informed
participant in the birthing of our baby and a healthy, happy parent.
Pre-/postnatal yoga for genuine yoga practitioners: There are many books and videos
out on this subject, but nearly every single one is geared to a beginner audience. This
book speaks to the ever-increasing number of women who have an established yoga
practice and helps her take that knowledge on the journey of becoming a mother.

book also includes asana sequences and advice from the foremost teachers of pre- and
postnatal yoga in the country--Jane Austin, De West, and Stephanie Snyder among them.

a woman's body during pregnancy, birth, and early motherhod with yogic wisdom and
practice makes this book both practical and indispensable.

Millions of city dwellers want the real dirt on composting. Whether they're
staunch environmentalists or urbanites touting green as the new black, folks who
compost are the latest force joining backyard chickeners, balcony beekeepers, and
community gardeners in helping cities get down to earth. Packed with research, expert testimonies, and a healthy dose of humor,
Compost City gives us essential strategies on composting in small, shared,
diversely crowded spaces. Whether you live in a fifth-floor walk-up or a high-rise
apartment complex in the suburbs, you probably don't have much more plot of
land to tinker with than the little square on the sidewalk. How are you supposed to
be green minded when there's no green space in sight? How do you tap the social
ecosystem full of like-minded individuals? If you don't garden, who wants your
compost? And how do you transport it to them? Help! From hobbyists in studio apartments to activists on rooftop farms, Compost
City serves the millions of curious, adventurous, and/or eco-minded people who
care about going green but feel limited by their limited space.
Targets small-space living: Other compost books take space, privacy, and access for
granted, and many urban homesteading books assume you have a quarter-acre backyard
to tinker on. Compost City knows the unique challenges urban folks face and offers smart,
effective ways to traverse the intricate topographies and taxonomies of the city. Growing urban composting movement: According to the US Environmental Protection
Agency, over 150 communities in 18 states offer curbside collection of residential food
waste--an increase of 50 percent since 2009. San Francisco alone currently composts over
600 tons of food waste a day! Speaks to the sustainably minded: The bumper crop of urban farms, community
gardens, CSAs, greenmarkets, organic products, and farm-to-table restaurants proves that
millions of consumers want to put money and energy into sustainable practices, such as
composting. Author Bio: In 2009 REBECCA LOUIE became a certified NYC Master Composter

Even the simplest Ayurveda practices complement Western medicine because of
their focus on righting imbalance before it creates disease. Keeping digestion on
track is the key to health in Ayurveda, and eating natural, homemade foods in
accordance with personal constitution and changes in environment is often all that
is needed to bring a body back into balance. The Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook
inspires yogis and nonyogis alike to get into the kitchen and explore this
time-honored system of seasonal eating for health and nourishment. Ditching processed food and learning to eat well at home are the first steps
you can take to relieving imbalance. The Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook removes
many of the obstacles by showing you how straightforward and accessible
preparing your own delicious, seasonal meals can be. Season by season, learn how
the changing weather and qualities in your environment both mirror and influence
your body and appetite. Lifestyle advice on meal planning, self-care regimens, and
how to ensure health during the change of seasons is included throughout. And
the no-fuss recipes will get you eager to cook. To expand your cooking repertoire, you'll also learn foundational "everyday"
recipes that can be adapted to any season and any dosha: once you understand
the blueprint of a basic dish, you can recreate it in your kitchen year-round, using
seasonal produce, grains, and flavors for health and nourishment.

launched, and with that, a new way to savor and share nutritious sourdough breads
and treats with her Brooklyn community. Sourdough and other fermented foods are making a comeback because of their
rich depth of flavor and proven health benefits. In Sourdough, Sarah demystifies
keeping a sourdough culture, which is an extended fermentation process that
allows for maximum flavor and easy digestion, showing us just how simple it can
be to create a healthy starter from scratch. Moreover, Sarah uses home-grown
sourdough starter in dozens of baked goods, including cookies, cakes, scones,
flatbreads, tarts, and more--well beyond bread. Sarah is a botanist and gardener
as well as a baker--her original recipes are accented with brief natural history
notes of the highlighted plants and ingredients used therein. Anecdotes from the
garden will delight naturalists and baked-goods lovers among us. Laced with
botanical and cultural notes on grains, fruits and vegetables, herbs, and even
weeds, Sourdough Baking celebrates seasonal abundance alongside the timeless
craft of artisan baking.
Sourdough eases digestion: Numerous studies have demonstrated that gluten intolerants
and even celiac sufferers have been able to digest sourdough breads and baked goods
well. The natural fermentation offers health benefits that ensure ease in digestion and
even healing. Author's specialty platform: Sarah Owens's BK17 Bakery is at the forefront of the healthy
baked goods movement; it generates new products practically by the hour, and the menu
changes weekly. A few choice restaurants, such as Nourish Kitchen
(http://nourishkitchentable.com), use her bread to make their delicious sandwiches and
tartines. Author Bio: SARAH OWENS is the head steward of the internationally celebrated

The Great Spring
Writing, Zen, and This Zigzag Life
Natalie Goldberg
What does it take to have a long writing life? Through her years of
writing, teaching, and practicing Zen, Natalie Goldberg shares the
experiences that have opened her to new ways of being alive—
experiences that point the way forward in our lives and our writing.
ON SALE 2/2/2016
Trim: 5½ x 8½
Length: 272 pages
The “Great Spring” refers to the great rush of energy that arrives
when you think no life will ever come again: the early yellow flowering
forsythia. It also refers to enlightenment: obstructions shatter, pain
cracks open, previously resisted truth releases, an acceptance of
transiency flows through. Natalie Goldberg shares the moments that
have sprung from her own life of writing, teaching, and Zen practice—
moments of searching, wandering, zigzagging, losing, and leaping
where she has found herself and her voice. In these pages, we watch
as Natalie “makes positive effort for the good”—one the guiding rules
of her writing life—and we see that if we can stay attentive in our lives,
even in the middle of the ruins, that “we can hear the sound of a
songbird in a Paris chestnut tree.” It doesn’t matter if we know if the
song comes from inside us or out.
Author Bio: NATALIE GOLDBERG is the author of fourteen books,
including Writing Down the Bones, which has changed the way writing
is taught in this country. She has led workshops and retreats for forty
years nationally and internationally. She has also painted for as long
as she has written. She lives in northern New Mexico. For more
