Our Own OPALS
According to Webster (still my personal preference over Wikipedia) the word “Opal” comes from the Latin Opalus and literally
means jewel. Despite some early superstitions about Opals being a source of bad luck, ancient Greeks considered them the luckiest
and most precious of all the gems because of their ability to showcase a multitude of different colors. This lore makes perfect sense
to me, especially as we launch our own OPALs program for Hebron area seniors.
We chose the name because, just like the gemstone, our OPALs (Older People with Active Lifestyles) have each become unique
through years spent solidifying into their own current, jewel-like forms. And, just like the gemstone, our OPALs are made up of
individual traits, each reflecting their own interplay of colors like microscopic droplets of water in a rainbow. Finally, just like the
gemstone, our OPALs are full of fire, often have almost magical qualities and hold limitless value and possibilities.
Our OPALs programming will be offered through the Harvard Senior Center, and at 2 senior satellite sites in Hebron: Saint John’s
Lutheran Church on Tuesdays and the Hebron United Methodist Church (HUMC) on Wednesdays. Any McHenry County senior
(over age 60) is welcome to participate in OPALs offerings. Senior Center membership is not required but is only $10 a year and
members receive most programs for free, while non-members pay a small fee. Grant-funded services are free for both members and
non-members.
The activities include the traditional ABCs (Arts, Bingo, Crafts) of senior services, as well as a host of new programs that have been
suggested by the Senior Advisory Council (S.A.C.). Some of these ideas are already in place, including Senior Yoga, Music and
Movement, and a trained, Community Resource Navigator to individually help seniors get connected to available services. Several
others are in development, including congregate meals, a walking club (sponsored by the Dari Company), and day trips. Each senior
site has representatives on the S.A.C., with Shirlee Correll and Ella Bostic serving from HUMC; and Toby Behrens and Gayle
Mansfield representing St. Johns.
All this is just the beginning of the new OPALs program for area seniors and we will be distributing activity calendars and a monthly
newsletter with upcoming events, registration information, and copies of the calendar in the church information racks and all around
the towns. In May, our website, harvardseniorcenter.org, will link to the 2 church sites for even more ways to stay connected.
Please call the Harvard Community Senior Center at (815) 943 – 2740, or contact one of the S.A.C. members, for more information
and thanks for this OPALs Opportunity!
Sincerely,

Our Mission:
“Our mission is to help

order to be successful in life.
In addition, we want to
educate as many people as

having a better understanding of this disability, people
will become more accepting
of the fact that there is no

“5 Tips for starting out on the right foot with your ‘college’
roommate”
Contact your roommate – once you receive your assignment,
contact your future roommate. Remember, even if your
roommate is your complete opposite, they are most likely just
as curious and nervous about meeting you as you are them.
Work out the details – Schedule your move so that you are not
moving at the exact same time. Also, trade cell phone numbers
and other contact info in case of emergencies. Gather additional
information about your roommate such as religious practices,
hobbies and health practices.
Remember, your roommate doesn’t have to be your best friend
– Coexisting with a stranger tends to be EASIER that you initially
imagine. Your roommate doesn’t have to be your best friend
but you need to communicate and be able to live together.
Address problems as soon as they occur – as time goes on, you
may discover that there are things about your roommate that
bother you. Address the issue as soon as possible. When you let
small annoyances continue over time, it eventually becomes a
much bigger problem.
Get help if you need it!! It is possible that bigger issues will
surface. When it is time for ask for help, visit your resident
assistant (RA) or resident director (RD) and talk to them about
your issue. They may suggest that you confront your roommate
first. If that doesn’t work, you may have the option of moving to
a different room. Remember- nothing will change unless you
make it change.
