ALOA SPRINGFEST LUTHERHOSTEL: MAY 13–17, 2015 The scenic Heartwood Conference Center and Retreat in northwest Wisconsin is the location for this ALOA (Adult Lutherans Organized for Action) SpringFest Lutherhostel. It’s open to those over 50 who are looking to be refreshed in body, soul and spirit. The focus of this fourday Lutherhostel is to further equip you with practical suggestions you can use when passing along our faith, family traditions and patriotism for our country. We look forward to the daily spiritual topic by Rev. Dick Hardel; inspiring music and devotions from singer, songwriter and storyteller, Don Wharton; and information about important U.S. historical personalities and events presented by Tom Kuseske, retired Lutheran high school history educator. ABOUT HEARTWOOD Set in the midst of nature’s beauty, Heartwood offers guests great experiences connected to learning, living and leisure. Heartwood is a property of Thrivent Financial, a membership organization of Christians. Thrivent exists to serve its members and society by guiding both to be wise with money and live generously. Heartwood contributes to this purpose as a place apart for individuals, families and groups to relax, reflect and grow. Located near Trego, Wisconsin, Heartwood is approximately 120 miles northeast of Minneapolis. The 700-acre northwoods property features two private lakes and frontage on the Namekagon River, a nationally protected scenic waterway. Rev. Dick Hardel The Rev. Dick Hardel of Columbus, Montana, is passionate about “Leaving a Legacy of Faith,” his spiritual topic at SpringFest. Based on his research of faith formation in biblical and recent sources, Dick will share his findings that the home is the primary place for learning the faith, living well in Christ and passing on the faith. The role of parents, grandparents, extended family and mentors is essential for passing on the faith. Dick will share why the words “faith” and “family” are really verbs—“faithing” and “familying.” Before retiring, he served 44 years as an ordained Lutheran pastor in LCMS and ELCA congregations, as assistant to the Bishop of the Nebraska Synod and as Executive Director of Vibrant Faith Ministries. Dick is a creative thinker, author, teacher, pastor, international speaker, editor, publisher, coach, consultant, retreat facilitator and clown (trained by older Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus clowns). He’s a husband, father, grandfather, brother, godfather, uncle and friend. Don Wharton Don Wharton is a Christian husband, father, singer, songwriter, author, humorist, filmmaker and plane crash survivor who will serve as our music and devotion leader. Since 1979 he has performed more than 3,000 concerts (at least one in all 50 states), primarily at Lutheran churches, schools and conventions. Don passionately communicates his faith, the victories and the challenges through his writings. He has written music (250 songs, 20 CDs), books (one autobiography and two novels) and films (five screenplays and one short film that will be shown at this Lutherhostel). A Dove-Award-winning songwriter/publisher calls Don “a storyteller extraordinaire and a communicator par excellence.” Tom Kuseske Tom Kuseske, our resident SpringFest historian, is a retired Lutheran school teacher who, along with his wife, Cherice, taught in Topeka, Kansas, and the Twin Cities. Tom taught social studies at Concordia Academy in Roseville, Minnesota, and Concordia University in St. Paul where he focused on American history. He got interested in history at a young age when he realized that he wasn’t the first person on Earth. Watching “Gunsmoke,” “Combat,” “The 20th Century” and other shows ignited more interest, and a certain high school history teacher helped make history come alive for him. In keeping with this Lutherhostel theme, Tom will focus on people and events in American history that fostered patriotism in desperate times. Other Program Highlights • Evening concert by Don Wharton. • Outdoor and indoor games. • Heartwood wagon ride, evening fellowships, hiking, kayaking and canoeing. • Presentation by a professional organizer. • Session on creative management of digital photos.
