Cézanne Known as the father of modern painting, French painter Paul Cézanne is one of the great Post-Impressionists, though his work was largely unrecognized and misunderstood during his lifetime. Born in Aix-enProvence in 1839, Cézanne briefly studied law, but soon made the decision to paint full time in spite of his family’s objections. He moved to Paris, where he met artist Camille Pissarro. Through Pissarro, Cézanne began to work and exhibit with the other Impressionists, but was never fully accepted into their circle. Towards the end of his life, Cézanne returned to Aix, where he painted the Provençal landscape in near seclusion. At the time of his death in 1906, Cézanne had finally gained the recognition he deserved as an artist and his work went on to influence many artists.
