Research grants to students The African Network for Agriculture, Agroforestry and Natural Resources Education (ANAFE) has been implementing a programme titled Strengthening Africa Strategic Agricultural Capacity for Impact for Development (SASACID). A key objective of SASACID programme is to support research in agriculture, agroforestry and natural resources by allocating grants to deserving students drawn from Pilot institutions. So far, 127 students from different PIs have benefited from research grants to undertake research at different degree levels. Out of this, 9 were supported at diploma level while 43 and 75 students were supported at Bachelors and Masters level respectively. This is indicated in the table below: Table 3: Total research grants allocated per institution by degree level Institution Diploma Bachelors Masters Total Zimbabwe Forestry College 8 1 0 9 University Abdou Muomoni 0 0 11 11 University of Nigeria, Nsukka 1 0 6 8 University of Gaston Berger 0 8 9 17 University Felix Houphoeut Boigny 0 10 8 18 Mulungushi University University of Kordofan, 0 5 0 5 0 9 4 13 University of Boubo Diulasso 0 4 9 13 University of Thies, ENSA 0 5 2 7 University of Dschang 0 1 13 14 University of Abomey Calavi 0 0 4 4 Kenyatta University 0 0 3 3 University of Nairobi 0 0 6 6 Total 9 43 75 127 One of the key considerations in allocating the grants was gender parity, which is one of ANAFE’s key operation principles. The male to female ratio in grant allocation stands at 58% to 42 % respectively as indicated in the table below: Table 4: Total research grants allocated per institution disaggregated by gender Institution Male Female Total Zimbabwe Forestry College 8 1 9 University Abdou Muomoni 8 3 11 University of Nigeria, Nsukka 3 4 8 University of Gaston Berger 8 9 17 13 5 18 Mulungushi University University of Kordofan, 4 1 5 3 10 13 University of Boubo Diulasso 5 8 13 University Felix Houphoeut Boigny University of Thies, ENSA 6 1 7 University of Dschang 9 5 14 University of Abomey Calavi 2 2 4 Kenyatta University 2 1 3 University of Nairobi 3 3 6 74 53 127 Total Figure 5: Research grant allocation per degree disaggregated by gender 50 45 40 35 30 25 Male 20 Female 15 10 5 0 Diploma Bachelors Masters
