With the scraping, painting and maintenance season soon upon us, the collective outcry of every boat owner within a 50-mile vicinity could be heard. The west end of the river walk has also been affected Upon reading the reasons, and the responses, it was clear that something wasn’t adding up. Logs appeared to be taking over, with the stacks of logs piling up, and log trucks rolling through, chippers being set up, bark and all of the trappings of a log yard. It looked like our boats were being traded for logs. This wasn’t, however, a case of “Fishermen vs. Loggers.” In fact, it was a misunderstanding. Or rather, a series of them. First, it was an underestimation of the value this community has placed on the resource that is the Port of Astoria Boatyard. With a rich maritime history, it’s also clear that the vessels that ply the waters surrounding Astoria aren’t going anywhere soon. Vessels from pleasure craft on to utility workboats use that haulout facility, and with its closure apparently looming almost overnight, the community rallied. That next Port of Astoria commission meeting following the article’s publication was overflowing with fishermen, boaters, citizens, and all manner of satellite business owners that depend on that boatyard to generate income. Something else would have to be done. At that meeting, we were reassured that the boatyard would remain open while a committee would be formed to help come up with ways to address the problems surrounding the yard and its long-term survival. Being on that committee allowed insight into the concern, and care, with regards to how this property is handled, and that there is a value placed on the boat owners who live and work here. The work being done to understand the issues surrounding it is impressive and leaves me hopeful. The firestorm that started over social media and other websites was productive in that it generated awareness, but the real venue to get things done is achieved by getting involved. Attend meetings, write, call, or e-mail your elected officials and communicate your needs and solutions clearly and calmly. The downfall of so much electronic media is that it allows a population to feel like they are “doing something” when in fact the opposite is true. The best plan of attack, when feeling the urge to vent on social AnAmericanFootprint.com 6 media, about something you really truly care about, is to rally your fellow keyboard warriors, and write e-mails, or actual letters, and address them to the officials that govern the entities involved with your cause. Set up a Change.org petition, if one isn’t already up and running. Attend the relevant meetings. It’s far too easy to expend energy and effort towards the wrong source (in this case, logs vs boats), and the real problem will go unaddressed. The boatyard is important to have functioning and near our port for emergencies as well as regular maintenance. Its presence is also important to a number of local businesses, and having a well-maintained facility will attract people from other areas to stay and spend money in our town. I’m glad to see that it is being given its due from the people who need it, in order to keep it open. It’s far from over, and please remember to stay informed, stay involved, and truly understand the issues we are faced with in this community. Nothing gets us excited for spring like a nostalgia-fueled revival of all things rockabilly- that fashion trend born of rock ‘n’ roll and ‘hillbilly’ country music circa the American 1950’s. The Runways of New York are being taken over by designers showcasing models with string ties, leather jackets and rockabilly hair. In LA every aspiring actress is trying to obtain the special skill of achieving that perfect pin-up look. Las Vegas recently had its 18th annual Viva Las Vegas, one of the world’s largest rockabilly festivals. Our very own Portland is busting at the seams with Vintage inspired fashion designers and pin-up models all waiting to be the next big Rockabilly Star! For Astorians to achieve the current neo-rockabilly look, look no further than the foot of 11th street! Inside Pier 11 is the new salon and studio The Shop for Guys & Dolls. For a rockabilly hairdo, or if you just want the full nostalgic treatment these girls know it best. Astoria’s Pin-Up 2015 was the latest project from Mundel Make-Up Artistry and VonVintage Imagery. It was the brain child of the dynamic duo Patricia VonVintage and Ashley Mundel. You may have heard there were 15 contestants from all over Oregon and Washington competing to win a publication in Foxy Lady Pin-Up Magazine and become the raining Astoria’s Pin-Up 2015! The project received over 12,000 like views and shares on Facebook alone. Residing in Astoria Oregon this team has way too much fun doing their jobs! It has not been an easy road to success! It all started back in 2011 when Ashley, a make-up artist wanted to get more creative with her work. A phone call to her dear friend Trish was all it took to gain the confidence to start booking shoots. Originally the girls hired out photographers, and hair stylist for their unique photo shoot parties. They would pick a theme, pick the date and the girls would come running! They had Sugar Skull shoots, Christmas Boudoir shoots, A Candy inspired shoot, and lastly a Pin-Up themed shoot. That is where the girls really felt at home! Both being inspired by the Vintage Beauties of the past, a light bulb went off and they found what they wanted to do forever! The girls enrolled in beauty school, bought their own camera and equipment and they never looked back! Now it’s 2015 and they have been going strong! They have both successfully graduated as licensed Cosmetologists. Both girls do custom cuts and colors as well as focus on the Studio end of their business. Ashley still focuses on Make-Up and networking for the shoots, while Trish with her expert eye for posing any shape girl is the photographer. Both the girls offer their skills in creating unique props, costumes, locations, and vintage hairstyles. Photographing beauty is their passion in front or behind the camera! Both girls have experienced success this year in front of the camera, they have been published inside international and Northwest pinup magazines. Since the beginning of 2015 there have been 13 publications for these two and their clients! With the launch of their new space they have been able to take on new projects such as the work they have been doing with small businesses like The Arc Arcade in Astoria and Mad Hatters Glass in Longbeach WA. So what’s next for this vintage inspired team? “An endless amount of projects full of a creative touch only we can provide!” says Trish. “We have calendars, festivals, and big shoots planned.” There biggest project coming up is” The Astoria Vintage Calendar 2016.” Contact the girls to sponsor a month and the entire shoot is focused around your business. They will still be traveling for their work, but will now have a place you may also travel too. To see more of their work check out their Facebook fan pages! An important goal for the Park is the purchase and installation of a 30 foot hillside slide. Park improvements will benefit the general public. Users of the completed improvements will cross all lines for ethnicity, geography, income, education, age, and gender. The Park users reside in a federally recognized area of an economically disadvantaged population. The health and well-being of the vulnerable population in McClure Park as it looks today the Park service area is a critical problem addressed by the overall FRIENDS Park plan. This project addresses the lack of outdoor activity equipment and will be incorporated in an appropriate landscape and setting. The community will be improved on many levels including pride in their improved local park facilities, emotional benefits of visiting a natural green space of historical significance. The surroundings will allow personal release both mentally and physically in their own neighborhood. $40,000 is needed for the purchase and installation of the hillside slide. All donations are tax deductible to FRIENDS, APRC Foundation, 501(c)(3). Please help us fund this project with your donations. No amount is too small as a gift from your heart!
