Permission is not granted to copy or distribute this pattern in any manner. MATERIALS: Worsted weight yarn, worked 2 strands at the same time. (100 grams to make both items) Scrap of yellow, approx. 10 yards, scrap of white, approx. 10 yards Crochet Hook, size 9mm (USM), size 6mm for the eyes and beak 2 buttons INSTRUCTIONS: MAKE THE HAT: Working with 2 strands of worsted weight yarn, and a size 9mm crochet hook: 1. Chain 12, single crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook, and in each stitch of the chain. 2. Chain 1 and turn. Working in the back loop of the stitch only, single crochet in each stitch across. 3. Repeat step 2, until the rectangle is 13 inches long. 4. Fold the work in half, bringing the first row and the last row together, and slip stitch the two sides together to form a tube. (This will be the side seam of the hat.) Then slip stitch the top of the hat closed, and fasten off. (See photos below.) 5. Make the ear flaps and the ties: Chain 6, single crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook and in each stitch of the chain. Chain 1 and turn, single crochet in each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn, single crochet in the center stitch of the row, and in the last stitch, Chain 1 and turn. Add one strand of yellow yarn to the yarns already being used. Chain 16, and fasten off. See the photo on the right. Attach the earflaps to the hat. Center the first one at the side seam of the hat, with the side seam positioned in the center of the ear flap. Either sew the earflap onto the hat, or slip stitch with the crochet hook. Position the other earflap on the other side of the hat, locating the fold for the side of the hat, and positioning the earflap centered at that stitch. See the photos below. 6. Make the eyes: (Make 2.) Working with a size 6mm crochet hook, and one strand of worsted weight yarn, chain 5, slip stitch to join and form a ring. Chain 2, make 12 double crochet in the ring, slip stitch to join, and fasten off with a yarn end long enough to sew the eye to the hat. (Approximately 15 inches.) Sew a button in the center, and sew onto the hat. 7. Make the beak: Working with a size 6mm crochet hook, chain 6, single crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook, and in each stitch of the chain. *Chain 1 and turn, single crochet in each stitch of the row. Repeat from * for 2 more rows. Chain 1 and turn, single crochet in the next stitch, chain 3, single crochet in the last stitch of the row, and fasten off with a yarn end long enough to sew the beak onto the hat, approx. 10 inches. (The chain 3 forms the point of the beak.) 8. Make 4 tassels from the instructions below, and attach one to each corner of the hat, and one to each end of the ties. Weave all the yarn ends into the finished work, with a yarn needle. MAKE THE DIAPER COVER: 1. Chain 11, single crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook, and in each stitch of the chain. 2. Chain 1 and turn, working in the back loop of the stitch only, single crochet in each stitch across. 3. Repeat step 2 until the rectangle is 12 inches long. Fold the rectangle bringing the first row and the last row together, and slip stitch to form a tube. (This will be the side seam of the diaper cover.) See the photos below. 4. Make the crotch section: Find the center of the row of stitches on either the front or back of the diaper cover. Count 3 stitches past the center, and attach the yarn in that stitch, chain 1, and single crochet in the next 5 stitches, centering the section across the bottom opening of the diaper cover.) (This section can be made separately, and attached to the bottom of the diaper cover. If you choose this method: Chain 6, single crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook, and in each stitch of the chain. *Chain 1 and turn, single crochet across. Repeat from * for 6 more rows, and fasten off with a long yarn end. Either sew or slip stitch the crotch section to the bottom of the diaper cover, centering it.) 5. *Chain 1 and turn, single crochet in each stitch across. Repeat from * for 6 more rows. Either fasten off with a long yarn end and sew, or bring the crotch section to the opposite side, and slip stitch in position. See the photos below. MAKE THE WAIST TIE: With 3 strands of yarn, chain 50, and fasten off. Pass through a row of stitches around the waist of the diaper cover. Attach tassels to the ends of the ties, and tie in a bow in the front. END OF PATTERN.
