PROGRESSION
Q U I L T S
We are all looking for ways to economize and use our stashes,
right? Progression Quilts explores the ways different quilts can be
made from project left-overs and new fabrics from your stash.
Using leftover fabrics from a previously completed quilt (and
adding some fresh, new fabrics, of course!) students learn to
progress to a new project choosing from one of eight simple quilt
patterns from my trunk show.
The quilts shown on this page were made in progressive order,
each using the leftover fabrics from the previous. The leftover
strips from the Courthouse Steps were used to make the Chinese
Coins quilt. The leftovers from the Chinese Coins were cut into
squares and used for the Nine Patch blocks. With the two leftover
quilts, I added new background and backing fabrics.
I help students add fresh fabrics from the quilt shop to make their
Progression Quilt totally unique.
In the workshop, I demonstrate all of the construction techniques
that you need to make your quilt.

SENSE
Traditionally, quilters often struggle making fabric choices when planning
a quilt. Learn exactly what draws the eye to interesting block patterns in
quilts to give them life. We discuss keys to effective fabric selection in this
workshop, apply hands-on design exercises, and make a quilt applying
everything you learn.
The first day is “Building Your Color Sense,” a no-sew, hands-on session.
You learn to apply design rules to choose fabrics for your quilt and
enhance your own fabric intuition.
The second day, you compose an eye-popping quilt, “Shadows and
Light,” using a single block pattern and ten fat-quarters! The block used
for this exercise is a magical block that changes design based on where
you place your fabrics. Each block turn-outs looking completely different!
As a part of the quilt making experience, you also learn precision piecing,
using one little essential notion.
Understanding the points taught in this workshop will make all the difference in your future quilts.
Offered as an optional 1- or 2-day workshop – either Building Your Color
Sense or Shadows and Light quilt.

DOODLE
Q U I L T I N G &
T H R E A D P L AY
Annieʼs workshop is all about creating free-motion stitch “doodling” on
blocks or quilt-tops prior to quilting. Free-motion embellishments and motifs
enhance pieced and/or appliquéd fabrics and provide an artistry to quilts
that will take them to new heights. Free-motion doodling is so simple and
fun – and is the beginning of beautiful, unique machine quilting.
You can bring plain fabric to work on, a quilt block, or a small quilt top
that needs additional design.
DESIGNING
Based her popular West of Baltimore machine applique quilt, Annie has
designed a special workshop for those who love appliqué and would like
to learn how to design their own quilt. You use an assortment of appliqué
design tools and artistʼs design secrets to create their own heirloomworthy quilt.
All of this coupled with Annieʼs simple technique for fusible, machine
applique.
This workshop can be a one-day or a two-day event.

APPLIQUE
Absolutely Essential Machine Applique
Beautiful machine applique is easily achieved when you begin with
the basic fundamentals.
This is a 1-day how-to workshop rather than a project, so you can
concentrate on the technique of the craft and take away samples of
your practice.
The workshop teaches three ways to do machine applique while
creating a small sample.

ESSENTIAL NOTIONS
FOR QUILTING SUCCESS
There are so many cool notions in the shops, with more to befuddle us
after every new Quilt Market. Using the right tool for the right job,
Annieʼs workshop details a horde of quilting notions and she will demonstrate their uses, featuring her favorites. Annie helps you understand
which notions you must have and which you can do without. This workshop includes door prizes of the demonstrated notions!
This workshop is a one-day event.
Kit fee: $6
Annie is a master at color and fabric selection techniques that she has
discovered, developed, and used in decades of practice. Spend your
week creating a quilt in a way completely different than you could ever
imagine using these same techniques.
Begin by detecting clues in your fabric selections that help bring your quilt
designs to life. You can apply the same techniques to your future fabric
choices.
Next, create blocks using ten fat quarters and one block pattern. This
exercise teaches you to design and construct unique blocks with an easy
and precise piecing technique using one simple notion.
When your quilt top is finished, you will design an applique border using
your choice of hand or machine applique from Annieʼs library of inspiration.

LECTURES
HELP! MY FABRIC STASH IS
GROWING AND I CANʼT
MAKE IT STOP!
Take a humorous look at the quilterʼs nature to multiply. Peek into the
inner sanctum of quilterʼs stashes. This is for the quilter who loves fabric
and needs to find creative ways to manage and get control over their
stash. Isnʼt that just about every quilter you know?
HOW TECHNOLOGY IS
CHANGING THE WAY WE QUILT
It is inevitable. Technology is invading the quilting world. Annie uses that
same technology to bring a fresh perspective on the quilting world, as she
did when she created “Quilting Stash, the first podcast for quilters” in
2005. Annie shares a rousing account of how her life, and quilting, has
changed since she began podcasting and how itʼs changing the way she
and you are quilting.
KEEPING YOUR LEGACY ALIVE
Each of our quilts has our personal story hidden inside. Annie will inspire
participants to see and unlock the personal story inside their quilt, how to
document the information and preserve memories to create an heirloom
for future generations as a companion to their quilts.
THE FABRIC DETECTIVE
Annie takes the audience through a journey of color and fabric, discussing
what the key to your fabric choices really is. No matter what your skill
level, learn how to change the personality of your quilts through choosing
fabric with a new eye for color. This lecture discusses keys to fabric
selection as well as how to make color design rules work for you.
