EVERYONE STRUGGLES: A Special Evening with That Which I Love Destroys Me (TWILDM) Presented by Midwest Anxiety, LLC and The University of Kansas School of Social Welfare Friday, March 27, 2015, 7:00pm-9:00pm University of Kansas Edwards Campus Regnier Hall Auditorium 12610 Quivira Road, Overland Park, KS 66213 FREE Feel alone and think "no one understands?" Are you too afraid to talk to your friends and family about your emotional struggles because you are afraid of what they might think? Mental health diagnoses are more prevalent than heart diseases, diabetes, and asthma, yet the stigma of mental illness has left many silent. The harmful effects of stigma lead to a reluctance to seek help, failure in school, relationships, employment and even death. Midwest Anxiety, LLC in partnership with The University of Kansas School of Social Welfare invites you to an evening dedicated to decreasing the stigma associated with mental illness. As part of the EVERYONE STRUGGLES campaign, Midwest Anxiety, LLC will be showing the documentary That Which I Love Destroys Me (TWILDM). That Which I Love Destroys Me documents two Special Operations soldiers’ struggles to recognize and get help for PTSD after returning from combat. In a culture that doesn’t necessarily support mental illness, these elite soldiers discuss how “normalizing the process” helped them ask for help. TWILDM has been well received and shown in the United States Capitol, the Austin Film Festival, and is currently on a ten city Return the Service campaign. TWILDM highlights that life is going to knock you down. How much strength regardless of depression, PTSD, anxiety, work conflict, parenting stress do you have to get back up? At times, we all struggle with negative emotions. We also have friends and family that emotionally struggle. Some might struggle more than others, but everyone struggles with something. Following the TWILDM showing, there will be a panel discussion about how our community can join together in breaking the stigma of asking for emotional help. The panel will include Ric Cagan of NAMI Kansas, Dr. Erin Dugan of Olathe School District, Dr. Sydney Spears of KU Social Welfare and other professionals from the community. Please help tear down stigma and participate in this special evening. If you have questions about this evening, please contact Randy Floyd at randyfloyd@midwestanxiety.com.
