Year Theme
Dear Friends of Aquinas and St. Mary’s,
I want to thank all of those who attended Gold Rush 500 on April 11th. What a fantastic evening we all had!
We owe a huge debt of thanks to our Gold Rush Committee and volunteers, who have yet again provided us
with a fun-filled and supremely successful event for our Catholic schools. Their creativity and excitement for
this event overflows to all of our donors, benefactors, and supporters. This year’s Gold Rush 500 generated
more than $200,000 for teacher’s salaries and capital improvement projects. For nearly twenty years, hardworking men and women who love the Catholic faith and their children have sacrificed time, talent, and
treasure many times over. They want to make sure that their children and grandchildren attend schools with
the best teachers and the best facilities. Gold Rush helps us to achieve that. We are very grateful to all of our
donors, benefactors, and especially our wonderful volunteers that make Gold Rush an outstanding evening
for our school community. God has certainly blessed us with wonderful people who love Catholic education.
Thanks to all of you in all the ways you support Aquinas and St. Mary’s!
There are a few areas at both Aquinas and St. Mary’s that will receive some much needed attention this summer. At St. Mary’s, the asphalt blacktop in front of the school has been in declining condition for a number
of years. This summer, the plan is to remove the asphalt and replace with new concrete. This will be a much
safer surface area for our students during P.E. and recess. As many of you know, St. Mary’s Parish will be
having weekend Masses in the gymnasium from now through the summer, and this flatwork construction
should not cause a problem for people to enter and exit the school gym. The St. Mary’s Office area will also
be receiving new windows this summer, as well as new paint. The current windows are very drafty, especially during the winter. The new windows will be well insulated and more energy efficient.
At Aquinas, we are grateful to the Jakub brothers who donated and installed the new sprinkler system for the
areas around the new addition. They have also installed new sprinklers for the football practice field that had
to be moved to the south due to the expanded parking lot. Thanks as well to Scott Steager for his help with
the permanent mulch around the building, and for laying down the new sod around the new addition. Also,
new vinyl tile will be installed in the high school hallways that currently have carpet. This will be done
thanks to the Blue Sky Auction at Gold Rush this year. Not only is the carpet very worn down, the gravel
that gets brought in from the parking lot on shoes gets vacuumed up and is very hard on the vacuums. With
VCT throughout the high school and middle school hallways, it will be much easier for our cleaning crew to
sweep the halls with a large broom. It will save a lot of time and money for fixing broken down vacuums.
Lastly, please encourage your children to keep up a strong effort at school all the way through the end of the
semester. I think we have had a great year so far, and knowing that you have given your very best effort in
school and on finals makes the summer break that much sweeter. It is also important to remind your children
about the dangers of underage drinking. One poor decision can not only tarnish a good school year, but more
tragically, can end a life or many lives. Letting your children know that alcohol and drug use is wrong and
dangerous is much more effective than just hoping they don’t engage in immoral behaviors. It is also another
visible sign to them, albeit subtle, that you love them.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Sean Timmerman

Dear Parents,
This is the May 2015 Final Test Schedule for grades 9 - 11. Semester exams are very important,
so I can’t stress enough the importance of being prepared. Please encourage your sons and daughters to prepare for these exams. Some students tend to procrastinate, so a reminder from time to
time may help to keep them focused. Cramming for the exam the last day may work for some students, but not all.

May 19 event recognizes AMS students
The annual middle school Honors Night is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 7 p.m. in the Aquinas north gymnasium. A music concert / art display will highlight the evening as well as a short
honors convocation in which eighth graders will be promoted to high school in a special ceremony.
Along with the eighth graders being honored, sixth and seventh graders will also be recognized for a
few academic honors. The night will include band and chorus musical numbers, directed by Mrs.
Helen Ostdiek, and an art display, planned by Mrs. Joan Cech, art teacher.
A reception, planned by the seventh graders parents, will conclude the evening. Sixth, 7th and
8th graders, parents and relatives of all students are invited to attend.
Parents, please note: This very special event is a dress-up occasion. (Boys: ties and dress shoes,
if they have dress shoes. Girls: appropriate dresses. No mini-skirt length dresses or outfits that are
inappropriate and immodest. Please wear appropriate shoes for stepping up on the performance
platforms.)
NOTE to Parents of Seventh Graders: Each seventh grade family is asked to bring 1 1/2 dozen
cookies or bars for the reception. Bring the cookies to the cafeteria that evening.
Mothers of seventh graders, we need mothers to take care of the reception table (punch and cookies). Please volunteer by calling Miss Fiala or the school office. Thank you for your help.
May Crowning
The middle school students will celebrate a May Crowning during a special prayer service honoring Mary, the Queen of the Rosary, Monday, May 4. The 8th grade girls will bring up flowers to the
altar and crown the Mary statue that is near the altar.
AMS Last School Day
The last school day for Aquinas Middle School will be Tuesday, May 19. During this day, we will
have our last middle school Mass of the school year. This will be held at 1:30 p.m. After the Mass,
class awards and recognitions will be presented to the students by their teachers. Parents are welcome to attend this Mass. This last day of school will dismiss at the regular 3:15 time. Dress attire
will be spirit day clothing.
New Students
If you know of any new students who are interested in attending Aquinas next year, please have
them contact Aquinas so we can arrange a school visit, or give the names to us and we will contact
them.

Monarchs in the Making
Dear Parents of St. Mary’s Students:
As any student can tell you, we are quickly approaching the summer vacation. I would
like to remind all parents of the importance of reading during the summer. There is strong research that shows that without reading practice, student lose reading skills over the summer
months. With the ever-present television, computers and other electronic devices, parents must
encourage their children to use their minds and imaginations in books during the summer.
Here are a few research-based suggestions that will make this more effective for your children. When children get help choosing skill-appropriate books and read those books over the
summer break, both independently and with guidance from family members, reading achievement scores can improve significantly. Select books that match the child’s reading level and interest. The most important piece to making summer reading effective is the help of a parent who
asks questions and guides children to better understand what they are reading. Ask questions
about the story and allow the child to ask questions. Ask the child to summarize and reread hard
-to-understand passages. Make reading more of an interactive process in order to boost fluency
and comprehension. I hope that these suggestions will help you to assist your children in their
reading skills during summer and all through the year.

Grade 1 News
First Grade has studied the Stations of the Cross for Religion class. We participated in the
stations on Fridays, and we enjoyed the kindergarten’s performance of the stations before Easter
break. We discussed Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. We also discussed Jesus’ Resurrection. We know that Jesus made Peter the first pope and it was his job to take care of the
Church. We’ve even learned about the Ascension even though it’s a few weeks away. Fr. Homes
continues to come visit our classroom and he answers questions and explains many details to us.
In Language we have discussed synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms. The students are
very quick to identify their word partners and use them in sentences. Students can recall details
from stories and sequence 7 or 8 events from that story.
Math has continued with most of the addition facts to12. We can also identify spheres,
cylinders, cubes, and cones and dollar bills and quarters. We can compare numbers with greater
and less than signs. We also identify simply fractions and measure with a ruler, both inches and
centimeters. We have added 3 single digit numbers and counted quarters, dimes, nickels,
and pennies. Recently we have learned about fact families and place value.
Our Field trip is set for May 7th. We plan to go to the Henry Doorly Zoo. The first graders
enjoy seeing the animals and learning all they can about them.
We only have a few weeks of school left but remember to continue to listen to your child
read daily along with taking the practice spelling test every day. We still have a lot to learn and
some end of the year testing to do so it’s important that your child gets a good night’s rest so they
are ready for school each day.

Grade 3 News
The Solar System has been fascinating to the students! They have learned a lot of facts and
details about each of the planets, the moon and the sun. One interesting fact the students
learned about Jupiter is that it is not only the biggest planet, but the giant red “spot” on it is a
storm that has been raging for more than 300 years!
In Religion we learned about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. We are currently learning about sacrifices and that God continually gives us Himself as the perfect sacrifice at Mass.
All the Reading Groups have or are currently reading a chapter book. The students do such a
great job of remember all the facts from these stories. They have certainly progressed in their
reading abilities and their ability to recall information. Remember to encourage your child to
read more chapter books over the summer.
We are really looking forward to our big event…our field trip to Morrill Hall and the Villa Regina Motherhouse. At Morrill Hall, we will tour the museum and then watch a movie about
space in the planetarium. At the Motherhouse we will visit with the School Sisters of Christ the
King, learn about their vocation and eat lunch with the Sisters. We are all looking forward to
this exciting day!
~Mrs. Janak and Mrs. Naiberk
Fifth Grade News
We had a great time on our field trip to the Edgerton Explore It Center in Aurora. The students enjoyed many hands-on activities and science demonstrations. (See photos below.) Now
we are looking forward to our field trip to Czechland Lake for the Spring Conservation Sensation, May 6. We will soon begin researching a famous scientist or inventor for an oral report.
Although the students have enjoyed being the leaders at St. Mary’s, they are looking forward
to being at Aquinas Middle School next year. Have a great summer.

Elementary and Middle School Parents:
St. Mary’s School is offering the Read Naturally program again this summer. Students using the program
have improved on reading fluency as well as comprehension. Laura Blowers will offer the program for five
weeks starting June 1st to any St. Mary’s or Aquinas student wanting to take advantage of this excellent, fun
summer reading program to keep up with and improve reading skills.
The student will read stories at a reading level suited for his/her fluency development. He/she may move
to higher levels as their reading ability improves. The student selects a story from the computer program. He/
she then reviews key vocabulary words in the story and makes a prediction about the story. The student reads
the story while listening to an audio recording and then practices it several times until he/she is able to read it
with good expression at a set goal rate. This goal is set at an appropriate speed according to the student’s
ability. An increase in goal rate shows progress. After reading each story the student will answer questions
about the story. They are expected to answer 80% of these comprehension questions correctly. The students seem to enjoy the program and the computer offers another venue to practice reading.
We are planning to offer sessions in the morning only, Monday through Thursday starting Monday, June
1st through Friday, July 3rd. We will reschedule or make adjustments for any sessions missed due to vacations etc… throughout the five week session. The program recommends a minimum of three 30 minute sessions per week; however any amount will be helpful. We will try to arrange a schedule according to your
needs. For example, if you live out of town, we may arrange to have two sessions in one day.
To enroll your child and schedule sessions, please fill out and return the following form by
Friday, May 15th. If you have any questions, contact St. Mary’s at 367-3669.

Aquinas Attends GNSEF (Greater Nebraska Science & Engineering Fair)
From Left to Right: Sarah Burwell, Luke Burwell,
Brooklyn Stara, and Clare Fiala
Four Aquinas students attended the Greater Nebraska
Science & Engineering Fair in Nebraska City on March
28-29th. Students have been working on projects since
August in the Science Research Class. Freshman, Brooklyn Stara, competed in the category Behavior and Social
Science receiving 2nd place with her project “Increasing
Math Comprehension Using Hands-on Math Activities.
Next junior, Luke Burwell, competed in the category Energy and Transportation for his project of “Effectiveness
of Winglet Designs at Reducing Vortex Drag” receiving
2nd place. In the Chemistry category, freshmen, Clare Fiala placed 2nd as well with her project “Increase Reflectivity of Kosmic Kreations Paint.” Finally freshmen, Sarah
Burwell, received a 1st place medal in Biochemistry for
her project, “Effects of Overfeeding TetraMin Tropical
Flakes on Nitrate Levels.”
Along with medals, two students were recognized for
other awards. Luke Burwell received the Yale Science &
Engineering Award and Clare Fiala received the Naval
Science Award with a $50 cash prize. Also, both Clare
Fiala and Luke Burwell were given the Air Force Certificate of Achievement award which included a back pack
with i-phone adapter, speaker, and flash drive.
There are many thanks to be given to individuals who
helped with these students’ projects. There were those
who helped students rehearse oral presentations, gather
materials, gave expert advice, signed off on documents,
and participated as test subjects. Thanks so much for all
your contributions to make the students attendance to the
GNSEF a success.

Spring Reality Check
A full list of open house and
events (including opportunities for
summer) can be found on the
website under academics
During April I was excited to have time with the freshman class. We had a “Reality Check” which is a
program designed by EducationQuest Foundation. This is an online activity where students set goals for
what they want their life to look like in 15 years. After discussing the values and lifestyle they desire we
talked about what it takes to have that life. The “Reality Check” program creates a dollar amount for the
lifestyle they have chosen and we then discuss what type of careers can support that lifestyle and what it
takes academically to achieve that career. We spent time in the computer labs looking at college websites
and researching local colleges so they could have an idea of what admission requirements were and what the
cost of education is. We discussed the importance of taking the right classes, being involved in activities,
job shadowing and being a self advocate. We also learned the difference between driving a hummer and a
mini van! Students walked away with resources to explore different colleges and career paths.
My meeting with the Juniors this month was a reality check of a different kind-we discussed the college
planning timeline for their senior year! No doubt being a senior is exciting but it also comes with a lot of
additional work. We began the work on writing an activities resume. (This will be something students will
complete as seniors and will use time and time again as they fill out admission and scholarship applications.) Students were also shown a “College Profile” tool to help in researching colleges. We discussed
how the admission process works, admission requirements, NCAA and NAIA procedures, testing requirements and things they can do this summer to make their senior year less stressful. It seems far away but
time goes by fast!
I’ve began the process of compiling information for graduation and am very excited to announce that the
Class of 2015 has earned over $500,000 in Scholarships! Congratulations to the senior class and
their parents. The extra work of scholarships can be very stressful and it is great to see these families rewarded. I would like to remind all seniors to bring in any award letters they have received (even if you are
not accepting the award) . The awards will be announced at graduation.
Juniors Start Thinking About College...
High School seniors have big decisions to make and the process starts
now! What is right for one student
may not work for another. There are
many paths to take after high school
-start thinking about them and know
you have
options.
Two Year Colleges
This is affordable and credits will
transfer if you choose to continue
after an associates degree. Visit the
website Transfer Nebraska
Technical Programs
Students can earn a
degrees in a specific area such as
nursing or
mechanics. Programs range from
9 months to 2 years.
Apprenticeships
Students can learn firsthand by
actually entering into the workplace. It is a great way to build
your resume and meet new contacts.
Military Careers
Many people enlist in the service and attend college or receive
specific technical training and
other skills through the military.
Four Year Colleges
This will give students a bachelor’s degree. They will take a
wide variety of classes and build a
great knowledge base to be successful in the workplace.
Think backwards…where do you
want to be in 10 years? Set goals
and make decisions to get you
there.
