Visual Arts: Two-Dimensional Art Scholarship Guidelines
General Requirements & Information
1. Finalist must meet all Participation Requirements (as stated in the Finalist Program Packet) and comply with TwoDimensional Art (2D Art) Scholarship Guidelines.
2. Finalist is solely responsible for meeting all Shooting Stars Scholarship Program Due Dates i.e. Prep Workshop,
Portfolio Submission, Filmed Introduction. Note: Finalists will receive one email reminder from ACJC
approximately one week prior to each Due Date.
3. Late or incomplete submissions or failure to meet any Participation Requirements, Scholarship Guidelines or
Nerman Museum Exhibition Requirements will result in immediate disqualification from the Shooting Stars
Program.
Two-Dimensional Art Digital Image Portfolio
1. Finalist must meet all General requirements as stated above
2. Finalist must submit an online Digital Image Portfolio for review by arts professionals for scholarship and/or
Nerman Museum exhibition consideration by Tuesday, January 13, 2015
3. 2D Art Portfolio consists of digital images of Finalist’s chosen artwork and a Submission Form
4. 2D artworks must be on flat surfaces and are defined as artwork created by the Finalist, including computer
generated works, in the following categories: painting, drawing, graphic design, mixed media and printmaking
5. Examples of 2D Art medium include: paints (oil, acrylic & watercolor), silverpoint, graphite, charcoal, chalk,
pastels, ink, mixed media, etc.
6. Submitted artworks must have been created within the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years
7. 2D Art Portfolio must consist of a total of eight images representing eight artworks:
- All eight artworks will be eligible for scholarship consideration
- Only five of the eight artworks will be eligible for Nerman Museum Exhibition consideration. The Nerman
Museum Staff will select one artwork from each Finalist for the Exhibition
- Artworks for “exhibition and scholarship consideration” must meet specific size restrictions – see #10 below
Note: Failure to meet size restrictions will result in disqualification from the Shooting Stars Program
8. Steps to creating and submitting the 2D Art Digital Image Portfolio:
- Carefully review the 2D Art Guidelines and discuss with nominating teacher
- Select eight artworks for the Portfolio, then identify which five of those eight artworks you want the Nerman
Museum to consider for the Shooting Stars Exhibition (the five must meet the size restrictions)
- Create/Produce one digital image that best represents each piece of artwork to include in the Digital Image
Portfolio; make sure size and digital image file name of each artwork meets specifications as listed below
- Digital images may be edited in order to represent the clearest, most accurate and best representation of
Finalist’s artwork and to ensure that images meet the requirements of the Scholarship Guidelines
- Consult with nominating teacher and/or review “Portfolio Preparation Tips” (from Prep Workshop) for help
with creating the digital image of each artwork
- Saved digital image file name (for each artwork) must be the Title of the Artwork
- Complete 2D Art Submission Form, making sure artwork images are entered/uploaded in correct section of
the Form (images considered for Nerman Museum Exhibition and Scholarship vs. Scholarship only)
- Do not leave any boxes/choices empty on the Portfolio Submission Form or submission will be rejected
- Submit online Digital Image Portfolio containing eight images and Submission Form by January 13, 2015

9. Portfolio images (total of 8) must be divided into two sections: (see sample 2D Art Submission Form below;
actual form is available when you submit your Digital Portfolio)
- Section 1: Artworks for Nerman Exhibition AND Scholarship consideration
» One image of artworks (five images total – artwork #1 through #5) to be considered for both scholarship and
exhibition at the internationally renowned Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art
- Section 2: Artworks for scholarship only consideration
» One image of artworks (three images total – artwork #6 through #8) to be considered for scholarship only
10. Artwork specifications for Nerman Museum exhibition AND Scholarship consideration – Section 1 of Form
- Artworks selected should demonstrate highest level of 2D design accomplishment and meet size
requirements for the exhibition
Note: The Nerman Museum staff considers quality, mastery of media, significance of content, size, and how the
artworks will relate to one another and create a coherent whole in the Exhibition space when selecting the
Finalists’ artwork for the Exhibition
- Artwork size: cannot exceed 24” x 18” x 1” – restrictions are due to limited gallery space and number of
Visual Art Finalists participating in the exhibit
- The Nerman Museum will mount and frame all selected artwork for the Exhibition
- All five (5) artworks must be available for Exhibition from February – May 2015; Finalists will be notified in
mid-February about artwork chosen for the exhibition
- To assist with the judging process, each submitted artwork must have a title
- Name of each image file in the Portfolio must be the same as the Title of the Artwork
- Submitted images must be:
▪ JPEG format
▪ 90-120 DPI
▪ 1 MB or less in size
- Finalist must sign a Museum Loan Form in order to exhibit their artwork at the Nerman Museum of
Contemporary Art. (Parent signature is required if Finalist is not 18.)

11. Artwork specifications for Scholarship only consideration - Section 2 of Form
- Artwork should demonstrate Finalist’s understanding of the principles and elements of 2D Art design as
well as originality, creativity and versatility of medium
- Artwork Size: may be any size
- Submitted images must be:
▪ JPEG format
▪ 90-120 DPI
▪ 1 MB or less in size
- To assist with the judging process, each submitted artwork must have a title
- Name of each image file in the Portfolio must be the same as the Title of the Artwork
12. Information to be provided for each artwork (on Submission Form):
- Artwork Title
- Medium used to create Artwork i.e. paint (oil, acrylic & watercolor), silverpoint, graphite, charcoal, chalk,
pastels, ink, mixed media, etc.
- Size of Artwork – in inches (actual size of original artwork); be accurate – size is used in judging process and to
determine wall space used in Exhibition.
- Date Artwork was created – during 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years
- Artwork Statement: in first person, describe why you made the piece, what it means to you, and how you made
it (in particular, what makes the work unique to you); keep it brief – no more than two paragraphs (300 words or
less).
13. Finalist or their parent/guardian must deliver the Finalist’s selected artwork to the Nerman Museum of
Contemporary Art in February (date to be announced) and sign Exhibition Museum Loan Form while at the Museum.
(Parent signature is required if Finalist is not 18.)
14. Finalist is required to pick up Exhibition artwork from the Nerman Museum when notified of its availability after
the Exhibition closes (mid-May 2015). Note: The Arts Council of Johnson County will not be responsible for unclaimed
artwork.

Program
Two-Dimensional Art Portfolio Submission Form
Two-Dimensional Art (2D Art) Portfolios must consist of eight images (one image per
artwork) representing a total of eight artworks, along with this completed Form.
The artwork images must be divided into two sections – one for scholarship and
exhibition consideration, and one for scholarship only consideration.
Section 1: Artwork for NERMAN MUSEUM EXHIBITION AND SCHOLARSHIP consideration – images for
artworks #1 through #5:
These images should represent the five artworks you want the judges to consider for both a scholarship and the
Shooting Stars Exhibition at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.

These images should represent the three artworks you want the judges to consider for scholarship only.

Thank you for completing the form and uploading an image for each of the artworks you selected for the Nerman
Museum staff and/or Scholarship Judges to review.
Be sure to check the information and image file you entered for each of the 8 artworks, paying close attention to make
sure the right files and information has been entered into the correct Section of the Form. Your Portfolio will not be
accepted if the information is incomplete or does not comply with the 2D Art Guidelines: actual size of artwork, correct
Image File Name for uploaded file, type of medium, etc.
Be sure to print a copy of your completed Form before you submit it.
You should receive a confirmation email within 1 hour if your Portfolio Submission was successful. Please email us
immediately at artsjoco@artsjoco.org if you do not receive a confirmation email within that time period. Remember to
check the “Spam/Junk” Folder before contacting The Arts Council.
The Arts Council will review your Portfolio for completeness, and send an acceptance/rejection email to you once it has
been reviewed.
