By Karen Harder The Fashion Show Committee is thrilled to announce that we have landed the two most prestigious sewing magazines ever printed as segment sponsors of the fashion show. Threads Magazine is our second fashion show segment sponsor (behind Erwin & Associates, Attorneys). They have chosen The Golden Age as the segment to support. Vogue Patterns Magazine most recently joined up and is still deciding its segment choice. They are interested in either the Golden Anniversary or the Goldfinger segments. Vogue has also invited us to submit an article and photos for their October/November issue that will cover our 50th celebration and fashion show. Vogue Patterns Magazine boasts a readership of 60,000. In addition, both sponsors are generously contributing to our silent auction. (continued on page 2) Share Your Golden Moments March Program The Word is Denim The March program will be all about denim, presented by Melissa Heischberg, instructor in the fashion department, College of DuPage. Melissa is an awardwinning costumer and former Fashion Group International Chicago finalist. She has been blogging about sewing, pattern making, and costuming for more than fifteen years. Visit her at www.sempstress.org. The meeting also presents the results of the Denim Challenge. By Wendy Grossman At our March 1 meeting, you will have the opportunity to compose a special message to honor 50 years of club history. You might write about a favorite memory of learning to sew, a special or unique project, or about a mother, teacher or someone else who got you started or kept you going. We will set up an easel and you can compose it on-the-spot! For $10.00, you can have up to five lines of text printed in the Golden Moments section of the souvenir 50th anniversary fashion show booklet. If you aren’t at the meeting, you can email your submittal in a pdf file to Wendy Grossman at wendy.grossman@mac.com. Alternately, you can mail your check, payable to Haute Couture Club of Chicago NFP, to either Wendy or to the treasurer, Ana Koval. Contact Wendy with any questions. (continued from page 1) Threads Magazine has donated a total of four DVD sets. Two sets are of Threads Magazine archives from their beginning in 1985 to 2013, retailing for $99.95 each. The archives include 170 issues from over 28 years of information on instruction, tips, techniques and tools. Easy to search through, these articles are compiled from iconic designers, renowned instructors and industry professionals. Also they donated two sets of the 3-DVD series of “Smart Fitting with Kenneth D. King.” These sets retail online for $149.95. “Smart Fitting” demonstrates a new method to alter clothing for perfect fit. You can work alongside the DVD at your own pace, pausing and reviewing it at any time. This technique can apply to any garment and any individual. A must-have for any fitting challenge! Vogue Patterns Magazine will be donating 10 patterns of the winner’s choice (Vogue, McCall’s or Butterick) and a full year’s subscription to Vogue Patterns Magazine. We, the fashion show committee, are very grateful to Threads and Vogue Patterns magazines for their incredible generosity! The fashion show committee is seeking more segment sponsors. Segment sponsors pay $500 to participate, but in return they receive two VIP tickets, recognition on our website, prominent mention in the newsletter and social media, and a full-page ad in the program book. Segment sponsors will also receive verbal attribution at the beginning of the fashion show segment that they sponsor. Our corporate sponsor, Turkish Airlines, also gets premier status. With their donation of two roundtrip tickets to Istanbul (value $3,000) they receive maximum publicity and get their name on any posters or postcards we develop. Turkish Air will uniquely get a display at the reception table, which they will provide. ___________________________________________________________ Election of Officers WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Volunteers are needed to fill important positions on the board of directors. By Marsha Geist and Liz Houlihan (silent auction co-chairs) EDITOR’S NOTE: Here is why it’s important to contribute to the fashion show “raffle.” Historically, while the Haute Couture Club used its fashion show as a means to fund a charity, it has only been since 2008 that it dedicated itself to raising money for student scholarships. Raffle baskets have been the past approach to funding, but when the club incorporated in 2008 as a not-for-profit, raffles (a game of chance) as fundraising were not permitted. Thus the Chicago Fashion Foundation ran the raffle for us and used raffle items donated by the fashion industry. But in a turn of events, the Foundation closed and now the club has opted to do its own fundraising this year with lawful silent and live auctions. This year, we will not have the prizes that were contributed through the Chicago apparel/fashion industry so we are on our own to support our charity. Please contribute and/or find a donor. We will have a variety of items displayed on tables for you to view and to place a bid to purchase. The Retail Value and an opening bid will be shown with an incremental amount to "up the bid"! At a designated time the table will close and the last bid will win the item! Remember, the show is only two weeks before Mother's Day...get your gifts early and all the while you will be helping the Club’s scholarship fund. We will be accepting items until April 20, so please help us gather more new items with a minimum value of $25.00....Services, Products, Gift Certificates or In-Kind Donations. By Karen Harder The Fashion Show is quickly coming upon us and we have more planning and sewing to do. How will your garments fit in? Do we need to tweak the segment titles? Here are some of the names of fashion show segments that are suggested so far: The Golden Age: Vintageand retro-inspired garments in black and white, harkening back to the time of black and white TV and movies. The strong contrast will be stunning on the runway, along with your creative use of patterns and fabric that make the Golden Age modern. The Gold Standard: Tailored garments reminiscent of those required for admission to the club back when it started in 1964. If you still have and can wear a garment that you submitted for admission to the club, you are invited to walk the runway with it once again! Alternatively, if you’ve created a garment as a result of a Carol Scott class, a Susan Khalje class or are self-taught, your classic garment is perfect for this segment of the show. The Gold Rush: Denim became popular during the gold rush for durable garments that had to last. Now they’re de rigeur not only as casual pants, but also in all colors and prints as jackets, skirts, dresses and…do you dare?...cocktail or evening attire! Goldfinger: Besides it being the Haute Couture Club’s 50th anniversary, 2014 is also the 50th anniversary of the movie “Goldfinger.” Beautiful ladies in alluring gowns populated the screen in these James Bond movies; they will populate our runway 50 years later as well! Golden Gate Bridge: Garments inspired by architectural lines, angles, curves, swoops and thrills. Don’t limit yourself to bridges and buildings, think also of contemporary lines and interesting construction. Gold Dust: A beautiful dress of any color can move to Wow! with some sequins, a gold belt, gold braid or piping. Don’t overdo it - a little gold goes a long way! Gold Smugglers: Dressed all in black, it doesn’t matter whether your outfit is a dress, a suit, a coat or lingerie. Wear gold shoes and we will accessorize you with a black mask and a burlap sack sporting a huge $ sign. Bank robbers never looked so good! Golden Anniversary: Party attire! Maybe it’s a cocktail dress, maybe it’s palazzo pants with a sparkle top, but in any case, you’ll be ready to celebrate our club’s 50th Birthday! Do you want to show something that doesn’t seem to fit in any of these categories? No worries! We will alter the categories to fit what you bring. Good as Gold, Golden Treasures, Go For The Gold…you sew it; we’ll show it. Does the fabric choice have to be gold? Gold simply refers to the fashion show theme, A Golden Opportunity, which is a celebration of our club’s Golden Anniversary. Fabric choice is entirely your choice. This is your Golden Opportunity to shine! Architectural Challenge Using the famous Golden Gate Bridge as an example, with its strong vertical pillars and drapes of cable, the Architectural Challenge was a test of how to create fashion inspired by architecture. It was a formidable task, but four brave members competed with impressive entries. At last Elizabeth Geer prevailed with her coat inspired by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. Judge Kenneth D. King commented, “Outstanding.” The March meeting will see the results of the Denim Challenge. Eve Kovacs “My inspiration was geometry, stripes (bars) and chevrons from the structure of the Golden Gate bridge. The colors worked well with a gradation of hand-dyed fabrics that I had on hand. Technical issues were foundation piecing on a silk organza ground and pattern drafting to set up the chevron effect on the princess seams. But otherwise it only required standard sewing, apart from matching all the chevrons exactly.” Noting the perfect installation of the invisible zipper in back, Kenneth King provided a brief tutorial on how to accomplish the same. Elizabeth Buckley-Geer “My inspiration was the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi, in particular his building La Pedrera, also known as Casa Mila, which has this gate. I used Vogue pattern 1331 by Koos Van Den Akker and adapted the cutouts on the front piece to resemble the shapes in the gate. Then, inspired by the glass in this door in Casa Battlo, I reverse appliquéd the kimono silk pieces under the cut out shapes. I did pockets that resemble the parabolic arches that Gaudi is famous for.” Karen Harder, left, used for her inspiration the book, Pattern Magic 2, by Tomoko Nakamichi. The collar has a “bird beak” in back and floating lapel in front. Elizabeth Houlihan, above, designed a chevron effect on her dress bodice by incorporating a series of overlapping tucks. FAASSHHIIO ON N SH HO OW W FA Q ( FR RE EQ QU UE EN NTTLLY Y AS SK KE ED D QU UE ES STTIIO ON NS S) By Karen Harder Got some questions about how the fashion show is working this year? The format is changing from a sit-down lunch to a cocktail party munch. Here are some Frequently Asked Questions and answers to inform you about what to expect. Please also feel free to contact me (ktharder@efg.com or 312-2916511) if you’d like further clarification or have other questions. 1. Q. I bought tickets online (or by check). Will I be receiving paper tickets indicating my purchase and seating assignment? Ans. Your seating section will be determined by date-of-sale for both online and snail mail checks, which is why this has to be done manually. Your receipt for purchase by PayPal is automatically sent to your email address by PayPal; by check it’s the canceled check itself. You will then receive a communication from our Tickets Manager, Alison Massie, either by email or phone, to confirm your seating section. 2. Q. Do I need a ticket if I am modeling or volunteering behind the scenes? Ans. Yes, but there are exceptions. There may be some non-club volunteers who will work the event, but will not be partaking of the food and champagne. In addition, some people outside of the club who are generously donating significant services such as piano playing during the reception and shooting our DVD, will receive free entry and can also partake in the festivities to the extent that their duties will allow. Sponsors of fashion show segments and our main corporate sponsor, Turkish Air, also receive free tickets. But in general, everyone else buys a ticket. 3. Q. If I am a model or will be working backstage during the show, do I need to indicate a seating preference? May I watch some of the show in the audience if I’m showing only one or two garments? Ans. There is a No Seat preference for people working in the show. For those who would like to sit in the audience for part of the show, you may indicate a seating preference when you buy your ticket, but Section C would be best in this situation. You would be able to come and go with the least disturbance to the show in this area. Please get clearance from Sally McDavid first, though. She is managing the dressing room and timing is critical. 4. Q. How will admission to the event be handled? Ans. When you enter the Union League Club, you will be asked to check your coat at the Coat Check station in the lobby. Coat check is free. You will then go up to the 5th floor for the reception. At the entrance will be a Registration table with a list of all of the ticket purchasers. You will get a nametag with your seating section on it. If you are a guest of a multi-ticket purchase, you will receive a nametag on which the seating section is identified and you can fill in your own name. There will also be an option to have your picture taken with your own cell phone or camera, either as a group or individually, as your own memento of the occasion. There will not be a charge for this, it’s just a fun thing to do! Then, proceed into the Crystal Room for the reception where a light buffet, cash wine bar, and an amazingly fabulous silent auction await you! Starting at 2:30 p.m., there will be a Free Champagne toast, Keynote remarks, and Live Auction of two tickets to Istanbul on Turkish Air, so be sure to arrive on time to take full advantage of the fun! 5. Q. What is the possibility of seating in the reception room? Ans. While there is plenty to do during the reception, you may wish to sit for a bit. There will be high-boy and low-boy tables and chairs available for a temporary respite from the activity. 6. Q. What happens at the close of the reception? Ans. At about 3:30 p.m., the silent auction will close down. The bid sheets will be collected and people can start to move up to the Main Dining Room where the fashion show will take place. This room is one floor up, and both the elevators and stairs are available for everyone to use. The fashion show will begin at 4 p.m., so there’s plenty of time to get there. 7. Q. How do I find my seat in the fashion show room? Ans. We will have some signage but also ushers to help you find your section. You may sit anywhere within your section. 8. Q. Who will be seated in the VIP section? Ans. In the VIP section, there will be our Turkish Air sponsors, fashion segment sponsors and others who will be introduced at the beginning of the show. 10. Q. When will I be able to purchase my silent auction item(s)? Ans. As you leave the fashion show room, there will be a posting of each silent auction item and the winner of each one. If your name is listed, you will proceed to a table where you can claim your item(s) with cash, check or credit card. 11. Q. Do I need a ticket if I am modeling or volunteering behind the scenes? Ans. Yes, but there are exceptions. Some people outside of the club who are generously donating significant services, such as piano playing during the reception and shooting our DVD, will receive free entry and can also partake in the festivities to the extent that their duties will allow. Sponsors of fashion show segments and our main corporate sponsor, Turkish Air, also receive free tickets. But in general, everyone else buys a ticket. That has been past practice. 9. Q. What is the path that the models will walk during the fashion show? Ans. Models will enter the room in groups of 3 to 5. The modeling path will cover the entire room in an S-shaped route and take about four minutes. Each model will carry a card with a number on it referring to the number in the program booklet describing his/her outfit. There will be plenty of information in the program booklet about pattern number, type of fabric, designer, etc, so as a model walks by, a guest can simply circle that number to learn more about it. Verbal commentary will be minimal. ___________________________________________________________ We Were Charmed by Kenneth At the February program with Kenneth D. Garment Review Information & Dates By Dolores Panek Here are a few reminders for those of you who are putting garments into the fashion show. All fashion show garments have to go through the garment review process. The easy steps are: 1. Make an appointment for a garment review (see dates and times below) 2. Fill out the front & back of the garment form for each garment. Please do this before the review. 3. Bring to the review: • your completed garment form • fabric swatches • guide sheet or pattern envelope where the garment line drawing is displayed. If you designed the garment yourself, then a front and back sketch (as best you can) will do. • pieces you will wear with your sewn garment (shoes, jewelry, pants, blouse, scarf, etc.) At the review, the members of the Garment Committee (Dolores Panek, Brenda Szendroi, Renee Liepins) will photograph you in your garment, check the information on the garment form, collect your swatches, copy your garment line drawing, and talk to you about accessories. Finally, our garment reviewers (aka sewing instructors) will ensure your garment looks its best. Renee Liepins, liepins@sbcglobal.net, is the contact person for the Garment Reviews. Contact her to make a garment review appointment and for answers to your garment review questions.
