Misericordia is one of just two schools to offer all 23 sports for
which the MAC/Freedom sponsors championships.
Men’s sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf,
indoor track & field, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis and
outdoor track & field;
Women’s sports: basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf,

Formed in 1938, the ECAC is the nation’s largest athletic

III from Maine to North Carolina.
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS - DAVE MARTIN
Dave Martin is in his 11th
year as director of athletics at
Misericordia University.
During his first 10 years at the
helm, the Cougars won 21
conference championships and
earned 20 NCAA tournament
berths.
The women’s soccer team made
the school’s first trip to the NCAA final Four in 2012
and Ashlee Ward won NCAA Indoor and Outdoor
High Jump titles in 2014.
As interim head women’s basketball coach, Martin
led the Cougars to their first Freedom title and NCAA
bid in 2011-12.
In addition, he guided the Cougars through the
transition from the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference
to the Freedom Conference and Middle Atlantic
Conference (MAC) in 2008.
Most recently, he oversaw the addition of varsity
football which began play in 2012 and has also
overseen the addition of men’s tennis and women’s
golf as a varsity sports offering at MU.
Martin previously spent 14 seasons as head men’s
basketball coach at Misericordia and served as
associate athletic director and coordinator of athletic
recruiting.
He led the Cougars to 11 Pennsylvania Athletic
Conference playoff berths and two PAC finals
appearances. Martin compiled 178 career wins at MU
and was a four-time PAC Coach of the Year.
A graduate of Wilkes University, Martin earned a
master’s degree in education from Misericordia.
MISERICORDIA UNIVERSITY IS D-III
Misericordia University is a member of the NCAA Division III.
The largest of the NCAA’s three divisions, Division III promotes a
well-rounded approach to intercollegiate athletics participation.
While Division III is best known by some for what it doesn’t offer
– athletics scholarships – it has plenty to offer.
Knowing that Division III student-athletes play for the love of the
game, the D-III experience is structured to help participants develop fully as students, athletes and citizens. Athletics participation
at many of the 444 institutions that comprise Division III allows
for student-athletes to succeed in the classroom and athletics.
ATHLETICS FACILITIES
The athletics facilities at Misericordia University recently
underwent major renovations which provide MU’s student-athletes with some of the finest competition venues in the region.
The facilities - all located on campus - include the Anderson
Center, Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Outdoor Athletics
Complex, Tambur Field, Metz Field House, McGeehan Field,
Anderson Softball Field and six tennis courts.
That certainly is the case at Misericordia as student-athletes are
often active in student government, residence life and other extracurricular activities.
Since 1993, the Anderson Center has provided a home for the
Cougars basketball, volleyball and swim teams.
In addition, Division III playing seasons and class schedules are
designed to minimize conflicts between athletics and academics
to promote academic success. This is evidenced by MU’s overall
3.17 GPA among student-athletes and 182 MAC All-Academic
honorees in 2013-14
The Anderson Center features a six-lane swimming pool,
indoor track, racquetball courts, fitness center and an aerobic/
dance studio.
While Division III athletics programs promote participation, they
don’t sacrifice when it comes to competition. In fact, the NCAA
sponsors 36 national championships annually at the D-III level.
The building attracts more than 75,000 visitors annually for
recreational uses.
Misericordia is one of just two schools in the Middle Atlantic
Conference to offer all 23 sports sponsored by the MAC.
Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Athletic Complex was constructed in 2002 and serves as a home for the footbal, soccer,
field hockey, lacrosse and track & field programs.
MU has enjoyed its share of success since joining the Division III
ranks in 1992. MU has captured 45 conference championships
and sent 23 teams to the NCAA Championships, including the
women’s soccer team advancing to the NCAA Final Four in 2012.
In addition, several individuals have put Misericordia on the
national map:
Ashlee Ward, Track & Field: NCAA Indoor & Outdoor high
jump champion.
Eric Sweeney, swimming: NCAA champion.
Willie Chandler, basketball: Second-leading scorer in Division
III history.
Heather Dougherty, swimming: NCAA All-American.
Sam Helmstetter, women’s soccer: First-team All-American.
Michelle Myers, volleyball: Led Division III in blocks per game.
Amy Bower, cross country: All-American.
Frank Redmond, track & field: All-American.
Kim Daniel, field hockey: Eighth in Division III career assists.
Mike Murphy, baseball: Division III single-game hits record.
Founded in 1924, Misericordia is a liberal arts based, co-educational Catholic institution located in northeastern Pennsylvania.
Sponsored by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, MU is one of 18
Mercy institutions in the United States and welcomes individuals
from all faiths and offers a variety of liberal arts and professional
programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
MU offers 34 majors in three academic colleges: Arts and Sciences; Health Sciences; and Professional Studies and Social Sciences.
Dedicated to the values of the Sisters of Mercy: mercy, service,
justice and hospitality, these values are found throughout the University, from programs of study to service projects.
The hallmark of MU is a dedicated faculty and a high quality core
liberal arts and sciences curriculum.
With a total enrollment of 3,111 students, including 1,982 fulltime, Misericordia offers the benefits of a small university with the
scope of a larger institution. An average class size of 19 ensures
personalized attention and a 12.6:1 student/faculty ratio allows
students and faculty to truly know one another.
Located in Dallas, PA, MU’s 123-acre campus has a suburban atmosphere and is only nine miles from Wilkes-Barre and two hours
from New York City and Philadelphia.
The Anderson Complex features a synthetic grass field and a
six-lane synthetic track, with an eight-lane straightaway, which
allow MU’s student-athletes to compete even when weather
conditions are less than ideal.
The Misericordia softball team has called Anderson Field home
since 1992.
Named for the late Dr. Robert S. and Geraldine Ruth Daley
Anderson, the Anderson Sports-Health Center, Anderson
Athletic Complex and Anderson Fields are all tributes to their
commitment to Misericordia University.
Mangelsdorf Field honors the dedication of Jack and Dorothy
Mangelsdorf to MU and the region.
The Misericordia tennis complex opened in 2004 as part of a
gift by the M & T Foundation.
Honoring the Robert Tambur family, Tambur Field was christened in 2013 as the new home for the MU baseball team.
McGeehan Field, named in honor of Mary Ellen McGeehan
‘46, opened in 2012 and provides a second artificial grass venue
for the MU field hockey, soccer and lacrosse teams.
In addition, the John & Mary Metz Fieldhouse was constructed in 2012 and provides meeting and locker room space for the
MU football, soccer, field hockey, track & field, baseball and
lacrosse teams.
The 21,750 square-foot facility is named for long time board
of trustee member John Metz and his wife and recognizes their
contributions to the MU community.

2015 SEASON PREVIEW
Following a trip to to the Freedom Conference Championships
in 2014, the Misericordia University softball team is poised to
get back to the postseason in 2015.
“My goal for this season is that we compete every inning of every game,” Head coach Jen Probst said. “We have some strong
leaders that will keep our team focused and it’s going to be a
fun year.”
Two leaders are senior captains Meg Hardy and Kristi Seiler.
Hardy returns for her senior season behind the plate and will
hit third again this season after setting a new single-season
record with 12 home runs last season.
“Meg does a great job in the middle of the lineup for us and I
expect her to have a great season,” Probst said. “Defensively,
she does an outstanding job of keeping
our pitchers focused and helping them
through tough situations.”
Probst has also been impressed with freshman catcher Lori
Brennan and expects her to see a lot of time this season.
“We’re hoping Meg, Melissa and Lori will all be in most games,”
Probst said. “Whichever one isn’t in the field will be our designated hitter and that gives us some flexibility in our lineup.”
Mackenzie Yurko will also add depth both offensively and
behind the plate.
Senior Sam Hare moves back to the outfield after filling in at
second base last season. Andi Veneziale is back in centerfield
and Diana Kestenbaum returns to left field. Cailey Ware and
Tori Ciszak are also expected to add depth to the outfield this
season.
“I’m really excited about the experience and depth of the outfield this year,”
Probst said. “They’ve worked really
hard on their skill set, especially their
throws.”
Seiler will start at third base and be
back in the cleanup spot.
Reigning Freedom Pitcher of the Year
Bailee Schies returns to the circle and
last season’s closer Alissa Steier is also
back.
“I really like that she has a lot of
experience, because you don’t always
see the best pitches when you’re hitting
fourth,” Probst said. “I have a lot of
confidence with her there, because I
know she can handle that pressure.”
Melanie Quintanilla and Whitney
Ellenberg return in the middle infield.
Quintanilla started the majority of the
games at shortstop last season, following Ellenberg’s season-ending wrist
injury.
“Alissa executed her role last season extremely well,” Probst said. “This year she
has worked hard to get into that starter
mentality and has built up her endurance to be able to throw seven innings.”
Kristi Seiler
“Both Melanie and Whitney have great gloves and the ability to
communicate well on double play balls,” Probst said. “Whitney
had a strong start to the year last season and we’re looking for
her to pick up where she left off. She’s a great leadoff hitter with
a good eye and she knows what pitch she is looking for.”
Melissa Parker will start the season at first base for the second
straight season.
“Melissa is an outstanding first baseman with the ability to pick
throws out of the dirt,” Probst said. “She’s also been swinging
the bat well, so we are looking for her to have a great season.”
First year pitchers Maddie Stebich and
Jordan Hoffman add depth in the circle
while Veneziale is expected to see some
innings as well.
Probst is excited about the opportunity to play a tough schedule during the team’s spring break trip to Florida.
“We play a lot of tough games against teams in our region, as
well as some crossover games with tough teams on the other
side of the conference,” Probst said. “The schedule will test
what we’ve been working on and I am excited for the opportunity to play some of the best teams in the country.”
The Cougars open their season March 1 with games against
Augustana and John Carroll in Clermont, FL.
