Thousands of people take to the streets of the city to enjoy the great variety of installation art and original, poetic, comical, fun and interactive entertainment on offer. This is a major event in the city's calendar for Chartres residents and anyone else who enjoys a party in a family and friendly atmosphere. For this occasion, the City will reveal the lighting displays of the 3 winners of the Chartres Video Mapping Contest, chosen by a jury of lighting professionals and the favourite as chosen by the public. The Video Mapping Contest, an architectural video competition, offers creative types from all over the world an opportunity to display their talent. The object of the competition is to design an original video scenography, suitable for the front of the theatre, lasting 2.5 minutes including credits. The animation of these images gives the impression that the building is moving, crumbling or being rebuilt at the whim of the creator. A simple Festival of Light over one weekend in the first year, it quickly became a major event for the city and tourists from all over the world came to see it. The number of visitors each year is estimated at 1 million. Laurent Lhuillery, City Councillor delegate responsible for the promotion of heritage through lighting, gives some explanations: "Chartres has the nickname of "Capital of Light (and Perfume), probably thanks to the world-famous stained-glass windows in its cathedral and the beautiful autumn sunsets of the Beauce region. In 2002 we wanted to expand on this reputation and invite people to discover all the Chartres heritage, which includes an exceptional number of architectural treasures. To do this, we wanted to use modern technology and show that we can combine ancient heritage with innovation. The local participants became involved in the project straight away. Chartres was a pioneer city in the promotion of its heritage through the medium of light. Today it serves as a reference in the LUCI international network of urban lighting. After success, we decided to prolong the event until the Artisanales de Chartres fair." This event functions thanks to the involvement of all the city council departments, but also thanks to the support of loyal economic partners and the people of Chartres themselves.
