Upper Kirby District Street Talk Upper Kirby In This Issue: Update April 28, 2015 District Construction Upper Kirby Streetscape Initiatives Before Upper Kirby Construction Westheimer Construction - Rainy Conditions Persist Westheimer Reconstruction: Kirby to Shepherd Construction on Westheimer has been hampered by rain as of late. Frequent rain and several severe rain events over the past week has made most construction activities difficult. After Over the past week, however, crews were able to complete the storm sewer connection at Shepherd that will tie Upper Kirby storm improvements on Westheimer into City of Houston storm improvements on Shepherd. Crews had a brief window to make this connection in coordination with the Shepherd contractor and skipped a small section in order to get the work done. This week, crews will complete the tie in between Persa and Peckham completing the main trunk line. New inlets and inlet leads remain to be placed before this is a fully functioning system, but flood relief is well within sight. Coming to a Major Thoroughfare Near You!!! Overlapping concrete work between Westgate and Dickey has again been stalled by weather, however, crews anticipate framing for concrete this week. Excavation and concrete preparation activities will also be underway this week between Kingston and Greenbriar. The goal is still to open the roadway to new pavement between Kingston and Dickey early in May with the entire north side of the roadway opened back to traffic in June. Bissonnet Reconstruction: Kirby to Buffalo Speedway Bissonnet duct bank construction has been completed and the project is currently in a down phase while utility companies work to transfer services to the new underground facilities. one telecommunications company is redesigning some of their services, so it is expected that roadway reconstruction will likely not begin for several months. Ultimately Bissonnet will be completely reconstructed with new storm sewer improvements, streetscape amenities and new concrete, however, work will not begin on the complete reconstruction until all of the telecommunications providers have moved their services to the new underground duct banks and the overhead poles have been removed. While this process can be completed in as few as 45 days, one telecommunications company needs to redesign some of their services, so it is expected that roadway reconstruction will likely not begin for four to six months. Levy Park Renovation Levy Park The renovation of Levy Park is scheduled to begin shortly. Burton Construction has been selected as the contractor for the park renovation and expects to begin construction in the next few weeks. Due to the high use of the existing park by dogs and dog owners, the Upper Kirby District has constructed a temporary dog park that will remain open while the permanent facility is under construction. Once construction begins it is estimated that work will take up to 12 months to complete. Redevelopment of the park will feature curated, year-round programming, native landscaping and botanical experiences, one of a kind children's play, interactive water features, a performance pavilion, an event lawn, a community garden and dog park.
