The Academy division is for those riders who have never shown in an A circuit show.
Once you have cantered in academy you cannot go back to walk and trot. Helmets are required
for riders 17 and under due to new congressional bill passed in 2010.
ACADEMY HORSES: Horses in academy classes MUST be a lesson horse regularly used in a
professionally operated lesson program. The horses must display safety characteristics of such.
Horses will be excused from the competition for unsafe behavior such as going too fast for a
rider to handle. Horses are not to be judged, soundness is not to be considered.
TURN OUT: Required is a plain shod horse, 1 therapeutic pad allowed. No braids or artificial
appliances are to be used. Hoof blacking is optional.
TACK: Horses may be shown in a snaffle bridle with a martingale or German martingale,
pelham or full bridle. Saddles must be cutback English saddles. No tie downs or blinkers
allowed.
RIDER APPOINTMENTS: Saddleseat Jodhpurs, boots, button down shirt, tie, and gloves
required. No derbies but helmets are encouraged. Whips and non-rowled spurs are optional.
Long hair must be secured back in bun or braid. 2014 Summer Fun Horse Show
6 2015 Summer Fun Horse Show ACADEMY EQUITATION is judged on the rider’s basic equitation skills with correct diagonals
and leads, proper use of ring is considered.
ACADEMY SHOWMANSHIP is judged on the rider’s horsemanship abilities. It is judged on the
rider’s ability to control and show their horse. Promptness in finding the correct leads are
important as well as the rider’s command of the horse, for example, speed, collectiveness, and
placement in the ring. Diagonals not to count.
CLASS RULES: Headers allowed in if needed for safety, no towels or whips allowed in with
them. Classes will be split at the 9th rider. Splits will be shuffled to keep equitation and
showmanship back to back (i.e.: 1a, 2a, 1b, 2b) Class holds will be 2 minutes in length. NO
EXCEPTIONS. Holds must be requested 10 minutes before the academy session begins. Gate
times will be strictly enforced and as one class exits the next will promptly be called. PLEASE
COME PREPARED FOR TIGHT SCHEDULE.
NOVICE CLASSES: for each age division and for riders who have not received 3 blue ribbons
in academy.
*Horses may cross-enter between A-Circuit and Academy if they fall into the parameters of an
Academy horse, i.e.: used regularly for lessons and plain shod.
Please direct all questions to horse show manager or the UPHA Chapter 16 representative. Any
unsafe behavior exhibited in the warm up area will also cause the horse/trainer to be excused
from the competition.
A TBA class is a class that can be purchased for $50, it cannot be a class already listed in
the prize list.
