The Friday Falcon Volume II, Issue 32 May 8, 2015 Dear Avon High School Families, New members of the Avon High School chapter of the National Honor Society were inducted this past Wednesday during an evening ceremony in the auditorium. Eligible students participated in an application process that aims to capture each prospective member’s commitment to the pillars of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The evening’s ceremony also featured English department teacher, Cortney Fusco, as the guest speaker. NHS officers David Lim, Molly Hamel, Katherine Stoll, Alex Lin, and Eric Selzer participated in the ceremony that was organized by NHS co-advisors Peter O’Sullivan and Cari Andross. Congratulations to the seventy-seven newest inductees. Because one induction ceremony per week is not quite enough, on Thursday evening twenty-eight students were inducted to the newly formed chapter of the French National Honor Society at Avon High School. The evening began with an amazing performance from AHS senior, Katie Holobinko (soprano), as well as guest artist, Patrick Baker (tenor), with both vocalists being accompanied by Mrs. Susan Hart. The keynote speaker was Carol Fabricant, a former student of Madame Brand. Carol is currently in the workforce with a position that requires her use of French on a daily basis. She shared a message of commitment, and risk taking while encouraging students to continue their study of French as it has a significant place in global society. A special thank you to Mrs. Brand, Mr. Dridi, and Ms. Rose for their combined efforts in making this evening a success. A special thank you to Mrs. Brand for bringing the French Honor Society to Avon High School. Several of my friends outside of education love to ask me if “things are winding down” this time of year. The answer to that is unequivocally, no. This is actually the time of year when things are winding up quite a bit. We have many celebratory events scheduled and the energy and excitement in the building runs high. Unfortunately, it is the time of year when some students dip their toes in puddles, and sometimes giant lakes of bad decisions. One recent example I can share is an influx of food deliveries to the high school with the understanding of “text me when you get here”. While this is clever, it is not okay. We are trying to convey this message to all students, but please reiterate this message at home. I also ask that you support security and administration when we direct the kind delivery people back to their cars, and redirect our AHS students back to the cafeteria. I hope you are able to enjoy a restful weekend. 5/11/15 5/12/15 5/13/15 5/14/15 5/15/15 B C D A B Day Day Day Day Day ________________________________________________________________________________ Avon High School is a student centered community that empowers each member to engage in authentic and substantive learning, develop effective leadership, and demonstrate humane character.
