The stencil you create can then be printed and attached to a pumpkin to be carved. You can use a picture of anything: a face, a house, a pet anything! The following instructions will guide you through the program to help make it as easy and fun to use as possible. Enjoy. Pumpkinshop Interface Icons New This will allow you to open a new project. Pumpkinshop will ask you to select a picture file. Acceptable formats include the following: .bmp, .gif, .jpeg, .jpg, .png, and .tiff Save Save your current work as a .pumpkin file. The save feature will allow you to save your work at any stage so that nothing will be lost. Load Load an existing project from a .pumpkin file (example: Myface.pumpkin). Your project will load at the stage that you saved it. Options You may change the options at any time during your stencil design. Level (Difficulty): Simple mode allows for only two layers of carving: completely carved through and uncarved. Medium mode displays three layers on stencils: completely carved through, partly carved, and uncarved. Advanced mode yields the highest quality stencils, with many layers to be carved. This is the default mode in Pumpkinshop. Mouse Cursors Turn mouse cursors off if they flicker on your computer. Measurements Choose which units (inches or cm) you use for measuring the height of your pumpkin. Printing Choose between black and white (B&W) or color. Note that full color stencils may be easier to follow. Credits Program Design, Graphics and Carving Instructions by Jeremy Burghall Programming by Alex Huijsman Program Instructions by David W. Pumpkinshop Program Instructions - Start to Finish The following will explain how to take an original photo, digital photo or picture and make it into a paper stencil that can be used to carve a pumpkin using advanced mode. I will explain how to do all of this with diagrams of the process that I followed using a picture of our vampire character on the front cover. Here we go. Stage 1 The Crop function allows the user to isolate an area of a picture for a close-up. On the sides and corners of the picture are zoom toggles. Clicking within the zoom toggle box and dragging it will allow you to select the area of the picture you would like to focus on. After moving the toggles around the area you want, click . You can use multiple times if you want to isolate the area even more. You can also transform the picture using the rotate and stretch features. Click to rotate the picture 15 degrees counter-clockwise or to rotate clockwise. To the picture, use the scroll bars by clicking and dragging the toggle on the vertical or horizontal bar. The picture size will automatically adjust to fit the sides of the picture box. When you are finished with the crop stage, press beginning and allow you to start over. . Clicking will take you to the Stage 2 The Trace function cuts out pieces of the newly zoomed-in portion of the picture to help give a more precise stencil without any undesired background. Click and hold the left mouse button on any area of your picture. Then drag the mouse cursor to create a traced line. You are drawing a line that separates the portion of your picture that will remain in the stencil from the area which will be removed. Let go of the mouse button, and you will be prompted by an arrow mouse cursor. Choose which side of the picture you want to attach the traced line to and click the left mouse button. Note that you will not be prompted by this cursor if your traced line is already touching a side of the picture. You are now prompted by a question mark cursor. This gives you the choice between which of the two areas created to remove. Hovering over an area will render it darker. The area clicked will be removed it will then remain dark. You can trace the stencil as many times as you want. You can also overlap darkened areas in your tracing. It takes some practice to trace well. If you make a mistake, click traces as you have made. Once you click undo you can click trace. When you are finished tracing, click to continue. . You can undo as many to return to the previous Pumpkinshop Program Instructions - Start to Finish Continued Stage 3 In order for your carving to have a good layering effect, the stencil must be rendered with various shades of gray to represent different layers to be carved. The Light function increases the area of layering that will be cut out completely. Click and hold the toggle then drag it back and forth to change the amount of “light” area your carving will have. Moving the toggle to the left will create light area. Moving it to the right will create . The amount of light area will change when you release the mouse button. This light area is colored in white on the stencil and bright yellow on the sample carving and represents the area that will be completely carved out. You may also the stencil. While using the edit option, you cannot change the light area of the carving. This option has three tools: The eye-dropper tool allows you to select a gray shade on the stencil. The current shade is displayed in the box. The pencil tool will allow you to draw on the stencil using the currently selected shade. You can choose from five different pencil sizes using the toggle . The paint bucket tool fills in an area of the same shade with the currently selected shade. The Click and buttons work the same as when tracing. to return to your light area configuration, this will save the changes made in edit. You may notice red outlines on parts of your stencil; these are 'islands' that will fall out if carved. If the outlined area is important to your design you will have to correct it by adjusting the amount of light area or reconnect the 'island' to the rest of the pumpkin using the edit tools. Dave’s Tip The paint bucket tool works best with black or white areas because these areas are Dave Tip's usually quite large in size. Using the paint bucket tool for gray areas usually doesn't fill in any large area. If you want to change the shading of a gray area use the pencil tool to draw it in yourself. Stage 4 The Dark function increases the area of layering that will not be carved at all, giving your stencil the 3-D carving effect. The process here is the same as in the light function. Move the toggle to the left and release it to decrease the amount of area to be carved, increasing the area of the pumpkin skin. This area is shown in black. Move the toggle to the right will increase the area to be carved, decreasing the amount of pumpkin skin. When you are satisfied with how the stencil looks, click . Dave’s Tip Once you are finished with the Dark stage, you won't be able to adjust the “lightness” and “darkness” of your stencil. A good stencil has a lot of layers that overlap each other (in advanced mode). Experiment back and forth between the Light and Dark stages (3 and 4) to get a good multi-layered fit. Stage 5 Here you will see what your stencil will actually look like printed. While the carving will not look anything like your stencil, you can see how it will look in the sample carving. There are a few things to note with the stencil: Orange areas that are surrounded by a blue line will be completely cut out, there will be no pumpkin left here. If you are printing in black and white (B & W in the Options menu), the orange area will instead print as a pattern and the blue line will be printed as a black dashed line. White areas that are surrounded by a red line will not be carved and remain as skin. If you are printing in black and white, the red line will be replaced with a black solid line. Gray shades represent partial carving, everything in between the orange and white areas. Darker gray shades will be less cut out while lighter gray shades will be mostly (but not completely) cut out. This is only for advanced mode. Medium mode will have a single gray shade representing a single layer that is partially carved. There are a number of parameters to look at before printing. The number beside this icon represents the height of the pumpkin that you are going to carve. You can measure in inches or centimeters (cm) check Options to change this. The height of your pumpkin will determine how large the stencil will print. Measure the height of the pumpkin you plan to carve and input the number using the and buttons. This mode will print the gray shades of your stencil as they were rendered in the previous stages. This mode will print the gray shades in a smoother, more aligned pattern. These shades will not reflect the appearance of the picture that was used to make the stencil, but it makes for easier carving. Clicking this icon will display your sample carving in the work screen, much like if you click on the sample carving in any other stage. However, in the print stage, you can click to see it up close. If you click print with the sample carving in the work screen, it will be printed, not the stencil. Whatever appears in the work screen on the left is what will be printed when you click print. Clicking will put the stencil back on the work screen. If you want to make any changes before printing, click . When you are completely finished, click . Your printer settings may temporarily take you out of the program to give you instructions on printing. Now it's off to carving!
