Use a juggling drill for ball handling
With just two balls and a partner, this fast-paced
ball handling drill can be completed in a practice
environment, outside or in the living room. Yes,
the living room.
Bill Neville, an internationally experienced
coach and the National Commissioner of Coaches
Education, presents this adaptable ball handling
drill he calls “juggling” that yields 300-500 touches
in just 15 minutes.
Neville discusses various ways to modify this
drill. It can be used in a practice environment to
maximize reps for ball handlers and setters. It can
be used as a “homework” drill for players to complete on their own time. It can even be modified
for inside play if the weather outside is frightful.
Check out the video on The Art of Coaching
Volleyball website for Bill’s pointers on implementing this juggling drill and modifying it for specific
situations and training needs: http://www.theartofcoachingvolleyball.com/juggling-drill-for-ball-handling/?ap_id=BadgerRegionVB

Tips for clubs and
coaches regarding parent
communications
Engagement between
parents and athletes is an
important component of monitoring travel to competitions. It
helps athletes to feel safe and
connected and provides another level of oversight. Clubs can
encourage parent involvement
by promoting transparency
through information sharing
and access to athletes. The
goal is to maintain open lines
of communication between
parents and their children.
No. 1 Provide parents with the
cell phone numbers for all of the
adults on the trip for emergency
contact as well as information
for all hotels and venues.
No. 2 Encourage athletes to
use their cell phones and other
forms of electronic communication during trips and encourage
them to send information to
their parents―especially regular updates from the road and
changes to schedules.
No. 3 — Dedicate times for
athletes to contact their parents
and provide a team cell phone
for athletes who don’t have
their own cell phone.
No. 4 — Provide a detailed
travel itinerary including times
and progress (such as reaching the airport/hotel, etc.) as
well as the times of practice
and competition.
No. 5 — Establish an e-mail
and text group for broadcasting
information to parents as a group
and set a schedule for broadcasting travel progress to parents.
No. 6 — Communicate information in line with travel and communication policies. For example,
administrators can list travel groupings and assigned chaperones to
let parents know that procedures
are being followed.
No. 7 — Create a social
media platform group for
parents using Google+, Skype,
Facebook or other channels to
enable video and online communications at the team hotel.

Boys player crosses the state to be a part of WVA
By Brian Sharkey
His high school does not have
brian@badgervolleyball.org boys volleyball, but he hopes one
WVA Nightmares outside hitter Brett Thompson goes up for a
kill at the 2014 Badger Region Championships.
Brett Thompson is unique when it
comes to being a boys volleyball.
Thompson, a 6-foot 6-inch
middle blocker/right side hitter is
in his second club season with the
Wisconsin Volleyball Academy
Nightmares program.
He is committed to St. Ambrose
University and also plays basketball
and track and field for his high
school.
Nothing really unique about that
yet, right?
How about this: He travels about
three hours from West Salem, Wis.,
to Appleton for practice once a
week.
His mother is the high school
girls’ coach at West Salem High
School, so he learned the game of
volleyball at a very young age.
Thompson chose WVA because
he got to know some of the boys one
summer while playing on the Badger
Region High Performance team.
2015
NIKE CAMPS
day that it will grow out toward his
area.
According to his coach, he can
play any hitter position and is a huge
weapon in the Nightmares’ offensive
system. He also creates big runs with
his jump serve.
“Brett’s commitment to the sport
and to WVA is really inspiring. His
positive attitude and excitement to
play volleyball has rubbed off on all
the boys in our program. We’re lucky
to have him.” WVA Nightmares
Director of Operations Matt Seidl
explains. “At the Dennis Lafata St.
Louis Qualifier, his family got to
the hotel at 4 a.m., because he had a
basketball game the night prior. He
was ready to go for our 9 a.m. match
and played outstanding as usual.”

Test your knowledge with the back-row setter
By Jim Momsen
Badger Region Ref Chair
Last week, we looked at what
constitutes a penetration fault —
aka crossing the centerline into
the opponent’s court.
I also posed the situation and
a question that we’ll answer in
this issue’s column: Consider the
situation of a back-row setter
who is coming toward the net
to handle an over-pass. What
are the eight outcomes that can
occur?
Early in my officiating career,
one of my mentors posed this
situation to me and added, “Seven of those outcomes are NOT
GOOD.”
So, let’s see how you did answering the question, “What are
the eight outcomes?”
Drum roll, please….
FROM THE REF STAND
1. No fault occurs and the
referee does not have to blow the
whistle.
2. The setter mis-handles the
ball. Double contact fault —
Rule 9.3.4.
3. While playing the ball, the
setter contacts the top tape of
the net. Net fault on the setter —
Rules 11.3.1 & 11.4.4.
4. While playing the ball, the
blocker contacts the top tape of
the net. Net fault on the blocker
— Rules 11.3.1 & 11.4.4.
5. The setter reaches beyond
the plane of the net and contacts
the ball in an attempt to save it.
Reach-over on the setter — Rule
13.3.1.
6. The blocker contacts the
ball which has not yet entered
the plane of the net and the
setter has a legitimate play on it.
Reach-over on the blocker - Rule
14.6.1.
7. The setter touches the ball
while it is entirely above the
height of the net and it is then
legally blocked by the opponent.
Illegal back-row attack on the
setter – Rule 13.3.3.
8. The ball enters the plane of
the set and is blocked into the
setter while part of the setter’s
body is above the height of the
net. Illegal back-row block on
the setter — Rule 14.6.2.
Well, how did you do?
You’ve had two weeks to
think about and identify these
outcomes. Remember that
during play, all this action
happens in a split-second and
the First Referee (R1), who is
sighting along the length of the
net and has the best position
to see the play, must make a
quick decision on the outcome
of the playing actions — What
was the position of the ball at
the time of the contact? Where
did the players’ contact(s) with
the ball occur? What was the
position of the player (above/
below/beyond) in relation to
the top of the net?
In future columns, we’ll dig
deeper into some of these rules.
If you have a question about
a rule, signal, or playing situation, please email Badger Beacon
Editor Brian Sharkey (Brian@
BadgerVolleyball.org) and we’ll
work on including it in a future
issue.
