Detailed Profile - Bangalore University

Sarbari Bhattacharya obtained her Masters Degree in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),
Chennai in 1993 and joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai to pursue a
doctoral degree in the same year. She obtained her doctoral degree in 2000 having worked on the magnetic
properties of d transition metal based amorphous alloys. In her post doctoral work at the
Laboratoired’Optique et Magnetisme (LMOV) at the University of Versailles, France and at the Thin Films
Division of the Materials Research Laboratory, Technical University, Darmstadt, Germany, in the period
from 2000 to 2003, she studied the effect of surfaces on the magnetic properties of materials. She joined the
Department of Physics, Bangalore University, Bangalore, India in 2007 where she is currently Assistant
Professor. In addition to teaching students who are pursuing a Masters degree (M.Sc.) in Physics as well as
first year students in the engineering (B.E.) discipline, she pursues research on soft and living matter.
Her current research work involves the use of optical tweezers to understand the behavior of active
suspensions, dense colloids and biological entities. She is also in the process of developing a detailed study
of magnetophoresis in human blood flow like conditions. She is interested in the development of optical as
well as magnetic tweezer based techniques to elicit information about complex biological systems
exploiting the interaction between micron sized magnetic beads and magnetic nanoparticles and in using
Mossbauer spectroscopy to shed light on the process of navigation that is achieved by sensing the earth’s
magnetic field in magnetotactic bacteria.
