Invitation Package - BC/Yukon Branch

To Victoria, BC for the 49th Annual Conference
May 22nd to 24th, 2015
Speakers / Events
In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Canada’s National Flag, the Conference will open on Friday
evening with the Beley Lecture in the Fairfield Room of the Coast Victoria Harbourside Hotel and Marina,
when our speaker will be Hugh L. Brady JD, Secretary of the American Heraldry Society and immediate
Past-President of the North American Vexillological Association. Mr. Brady will speak on Of Flags and
Formalities: What the Mother Science of Heraldry Might Learn from Her Children and delegates are invited
to socialize before the event at the BC/Yukon Branch Reception. Note: Dinner reservations on Friday
evening are recommended.
The Saturday programme will begin with the Annual General Meeting followed by luncheon in the Fairfield
Room. Afterwards there will be time for delegates and guests to enjoy a visit to Government House and
view the impressive heraldry in the staircase hall and Rogers Window, as well as the Lawrence J. Patten
Heraldry Exhibit on display in the Cary Mews at Government House. It is anticipated Her Honour will be
able to join us at this event, while leaving time for the evening’s formal activities which will take place in
the Hotel’s Coast Ballroom with a gala reception and dinner. Transportation will be provided.
We are fortunate to have as our after-dinner Wilkes Lecturer, Snawdoun Herald Mrs Elizabeth Roads
LVO FSA FRHSC(Hon). Mrs Roads joined the staff of the Court of the Lord Lyon, Edinburgh, Scotland in
1975 and was appointed Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records in 1986. In this position, she maintains,
among other things, the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland. She was appointed
Linlithgow Pursuivant of Arms Extraordinary in 1987 and thus became the first woman to be appointed a
royal officer of arms. Mrs Roads has chosen as the title of her presentation Nothing is New Under the Sun.
For the Sunday, we have no fixed programme of events, but can offer suggestions to those delegates and
their guests who would like to take the opportunity to explore Victoria and our beautiful island more
thoroughly and perhaps take in attractions such as the World-famous Butchart Gardens, British
Columbia’s Parliament Buildings, the heraldry of Christchurch Cathedral, the impressive Craigdarroch
Castle, or Hatley Park National Historic Site.
Getting to Victoria
If you are flying, you will be landing at Victoria International Airport (YYJ). From there, you have a number
of options:

Taxi – the easiest option; just say, "'The Coast Harbourside Hotel, please". The journey will take
about 45 - 60 minutes depending on traffic and cost about $60.

Shuttlebus – leaves approximately every hour, services all major downtown hotels and costs
about $25.

Rent-a-Car - the airport has a number of major car rental companies. As you drive out of the
airport, turn right onto the Patricia Bay Highway and then follow the directions for the city centre. A
good street map of Victoria is recommended for those unfamiliar with the city!
Full travelling directions to the conference venue for those arriving by ferry, or travelling from other parts of
Vancouver Island can be found on the conference website at the web address given below:
