Summer Contract 2015

WELCOME TO HIGHLANDS SUMMER CAMP
(Open June 1-July 31st, including four day week of June 29-July 2)
Highlands School’s Higher Degree of Learning does not end when the school year is over. We
offer a quality summer program as well. Highlands summer camp offers challenging activities,
talented teachers and great variety that you have come to expect from Highlands School.
Camp is open to all students entering Kindergarten through the 8th grade, regardless of the
school they attend during the school year.
At Highlands, we offer unique opportunities, some specifically tailored to your child’s age
group. We strive to offer camps and activities that will enable your child to continue to learn
while having a great time! Our Enrichment Camps include active, artistic, academic and just
plain fun choices. Be sure to note that we offer morning sessions, some afternoon sessions and
some full day camps! As always we have some new camps as well. We have definitely added
more academic camps this year. See page 3! We also offer Traditional Day Camp in the
afternoons for Kindergarten through 6th grade that includes a hot lunch, weekly themes, trips
to the pool, outdoor play time, some guest speakers, activities and exciting, creative projects.
This afternoon day camp pairs well with a morning Enrichment Camp for full day care. This
year we are offering a “Full Day Traditional Day Camp” during our short week, June 29-July 2
from 9am-4pm. Please look through the catalog for camp descriptions, ages, costs and dates.

It is helpful for them to have sunscreen on prior to coming to camp. At the
beginning of each week, campers will have the opportunity to take a swim test at

pass, are too young to take the test, or the parent just prefers, they will be required to wear a life jacket and
stay at the shallow end of the pool. Campers may choose to bring their own life jackets. This is especially
encouraged if your camper is small. Campers will be supervised by Highlands counselors as well as
YMCA lifeguards. Campers are transported by the Highlands school bus which is a small, shuttle-type bus

Mathapalooza 2014!
Ages: Entering 6th-8th Grade
Cost: $200
The mathematical seeds of Algebra, Geometry and even Calculus are planted in the
concepts and relationships introduced in elementary school math class.
Understanding these concepts and being fluent in the language of math insures a
greater understanding of more complex ideas and applications that are introduced
at the Jr. High and High School level. In Mathapalooza, we will review these
elementary school topics in a different way, using numbers as an infinite alphabet
to create mathematical words, ideas, stories and the world. (Yes Neo, the Matrix is real.) In addition to reviewing
basic math concepts, we will discuss and practice strategies for developing number fluency and computational speed.
(No calculators needed!) We will discuss the history, development and importance of algebra, geometry,
trigonometry and calculus, and how a variety of these topics evolve from elementary fundamentals. (Think stickfigures to PIXAR.) Last but not least, we will play games, have theme-day, music by the hour, AP recess and pi(e)
on Friday.
Mathapalooza is taught by Valerie Roberts. Valerie earned a Bachelor of Engineering from Vanderbilt University;
worked 18 years in the Oil & Gas Industry as a Project Engineer responsible for various onshore and offshore
construction projects and as an Energy Trader; and is now a private tutor and math advocate.
