Over the next 200 years these two nations sometimes helped one another and at other times waged war against the other, they sometimes followed the ways of God and were often led astray by their leaders. When this happened God rose up prophets to warn them and call them back to covenant-living. God’s prophets continued to speak words of judgment and love. However, a large group managed to escape to Egypt, while many of the common people were left in their war-ravaged cities. The northern kingdom would not exist as an autonomous nation again.
